Shannonbridge Fishing Report ...Dated 28/Sept/2010.
Weather has been generally good with little rain but the river level has risen to 3.65 metres.Fast strong flow on the river.Forecast good next five days.
>Marcel Wuthrich,Zurich Swiss fished Shannon with a lure on a sunny 20/9
and two pike 54cm and 46cm.
>Willy Use and Ermin Van Bouer from Belgium continued to stay in Shannonbridge and using a lakeboat and fishing for pike with dead bait and returning alive the 43 pike that they caught in 6 days.Willy promised to bring Ivan back when he returns again.
>Willy Ure and Ermin caught on 21/9 9 pike 90,80,80,79,77,70,65,65,and 60cm.Cloudy.
>On 22/9 0n Suck in sunshine and rain Willy had a 95cm pikeand Ermin had two pike 97cm and 87cm.
They heard that a permit is required to fish The Suck so they returned to The Shannon.
>On 23/9 Willy had 6 pike on the overcast Shannon measuring 94,86,79,77,76 and 60cm.
The same day Ermin also had 6 pike 86,85,79,65,60 and 60cm.
>On 24/9 on Shannon in sunshine Willy one pike of 82cm and Ermin caught two pike of
62cm and 47cm.
>On their last day 25/9 in sunshine on The Shannon Willy caught 3 pike of 91,85 and 69cm
while Ermin ENDED ON A BLANK DAY.

Intermediate Football Championship Semi Final.
Shannonbridge were unlucky to bow out of the Intermediate Football Championship, losing to Durrow by two points (1-12 to 0-13), at O’Connor Park, on Saturday. Shannonbridge had more of the possession in the first half, but were unable to convert this into a scoring advantage. They led by four points to three after twenty minutes, thanks to scores from Paul Moloney, Paul Deeley and Anthony Kelly. From then to half time, the lead changed hands three times, with Durrow going to the break leading by 0-7 to 0-6. Shannonbridge introduced John Egan and Karol Kelly for Peadar Kelly and Declan Kelly, at the start of the second half and levelled the game with an Anthony Kelly free. However, Durrow replied, scoring a goal and a point in two minutes. As Kieran Kearns replaced Paul Deeley, Shannonbridge attacked and were thrown a lifeline when Trevor Mahon’s pass to Eamon Kelly led to the latter being fouled. A penalty was awarded, but Niall Price’s spot kick was saved. Three Shannonbridge points in succession reduced the gap to the minimum with eight minutes left –(0-11 to 1-9), only for Durrow to stretch the margin again to four points. As time ran out, Shannonbridge pressed hard for the winner scoring the last two points. Full time score 1-12 to 0-13.

On Friday 24th Sept '10 Gary Schultz from Lexington Nebraska was back in Ireland and back in Shannonbridge and again riding a bicycle.Gary told us thathis in-law is Patrick Duffy from Drumlosh.Patrick met Ann Marie Schultz in Zambia years ago.Patrick was working for Irish Aid and AnnMarie was working with the Peace Corps.
Patrick and Ann Marie returned to Nebraska ten years ago to get married.Now Gary has two grand-children.Regret that I did not get more time to talk to Gary and find out what parts of Ireland he had visited on his bicycle on this trip.

Connacht Tribune tells us that in 2010 some 133 Calling Corncrakes (male) were recorded in Ireland this year.An increase of five on last year.On the mainland 91 were in Donegal,Mayo had 27, Sligo had 3 birds and the Shannon Callows had 3 birds. The others were heard crowing on the islands off the West Coast of Ireland.At this time they fly back to the Sahara for the winter.

John Kinlough was over from London on a short visit today and had a photograph of The Grand Gate which was the opening on the roadway and was located behind the Fort.John will be making a copy of this available for use locally and for viewing on this website.

Lady driving from Galway to Shannonharbour late on Thursday evening turned off her radio as she crossed the bridge in Shannonbridge.She heard an unusual sound and found that she had got a puncture.She was unable to change tyre so Donal Grennan and Karl Hoystead answered the call for help and quickly removed tyre and fitted the spare and away she went.Well done boys.

At the Active Retirement meeting on Tuesday the talk naturally enough got around to the renewed surface just completed on the road to Ballinasloe.
It was mentioned that years ago road width for country roads in Offaly was nine foot wide.
After some years this was increased to thirteen feet.

Bill Torpey from Philadelphia called in this week.Bill told us that a Henry Lyons from near The River Liffey in Dublin wrote a booktitled 'The Shannon River' or 'Abhainn na Sionnaine'
back in the mid 1960's.Henry used to read the news in Irish on radio or TV.
Henry had a brother John Lyons who was a priest with the S.M.A.He was killed in Nigeria in 1967.Now the connection with all this and Bill ?.
Bill Torpey's Grandmother was a McKee and Henry Lyons was a nephew.

Babby Colohan, nee Spelman, from Clonfert died on 19th September.May she rest in peace.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report dated 21st Sept 2010
The spell of rain over a few days have caused the river level to reach 3.65Metres at Shannonbridge on Tuesday 15th and this has eased back to 3.5M. today.Many Belgian Dutch and German pike anglers in the area on cruisers or staying in local accomidation and using lake boats.Pike fishing appears to be better when moving with the strong current.
>Keith Harrison from Brigg in Lincolnshire fished the same swim for the last three days of his holiday which was some ten yards away from the village bridge.Fishing in flood water and standing in water Keith only fished for four hour stints.
On 15/9 Keith used a 17Ft rod,maggot stick float 7BB to catch 71 roach,3 rudd,2 perch for 25Lbs.
On 16/9 in sunshine same tactics Keith had 87 roach perch and rudd in four hours.
Last day 17/9 Keith caught 56 roach and no rudd or perch in the 3.5 hour session.
During the three sessions he had lots and lots of pike attacks and one day while releasing his catch a pike came along and took one of the roach.
>Arthur Acker from Holland used Jerkbait fishing for pike on the Shannon.
On 19/9 Arthur caught and released a pike 85cm and the next day he caught a pike measuring 76cm.
>Barry Klien from Holland also fished the Shannon on 20/9 using Jerkbait to catch a pike 101cm.
>Marco Prouder fished the Shannon on 20/9 using a spinner to catch a pike of 50cm.
>Dennis Prouder Holland fished in sunshine on 20/9 catching a 30m pike with a spinner.
>Karl Barsch Germany fished Shannon on a sunny 20/9 using a wobbler to catch 3 pike 30cm to 60cm.
>In Erinneming a friend of the late angler Manfred Girch told us the sad news of Manfred's death.May he rest in peace.
>Willy Use from the Belgian Club used a lake boat and dead bait to catch 7 pike measuring 80, 75, 73, 68, 66, 50 and 45Cm.Promised to take his friend Ivan over in May next year.
>Vau Broer Belgium fished in lakeboat with Willy and used a spinnerto catch 6 pike ( 75- 60 -50 -45 - 40 and 30cm length).This was on 20/9 on Shannon in sunshine.
>Karl Barsch Germany fished today in cloudy conditions using a wobbler to catch a pike 84cm or 3.8Kg.

Shannanbridge GAA Club Notes

Under 12 B Football Chanpionship Final.
Shannonbridge and Kilcormac / Killoughy, played out an exciting county final in O’Connor Park, Tullamore, on Saturday with the game ending in a draw - 2-3 to 1-6. In damp conditions, Shannonbridge got off to a flying start with goals from Ronan Hynes and Jack Darcy. With the aid of some excellent saves by Barry Rohan, they managed to maintain a six point gap for the remainder of the first half, with a high work-rate and shot blocking being a feature of their game.
After the break, Kilcormac / Killoughy began to eat into the lead and drew level with a goal eight minutes from time. A point from play, by captain Elle McEvoy, kept Shannonbridge in the game and both sides hit the upright in their quest for a winner. Kilcormac / Killoughy failed from a free, with the last kick of the game and the stage is set for an eagerly awaited replay. Final score 2-3 to 1-6.

He says that educated people today don’t need the Church to teach them how to live. A. If he is so highly educated, ask him to read what the Pope has actually written. Challenge him to read the Encyclical Letter, Charity in Truth, which addresses the ethical questions underlying social injustice, the financial meltdown, rights and responsibilities, third world poverty and hunger, the meaning of life. The world would be a much better place if the Church’s social teaching was heeded. I find that most people who criticise the Pope have never actually read anything he wrote.

You are welcome to use anything I write. I did send Alison Munson several emails during the summer and they did not come back undeliverable. Perhaps it went into her SPAM as it may not recognize me. I have heard the name Potts Island and this clears it up for me. Still have not had a chance to check the CD made for me but plan to do it this weekend. I am a director of a local child care center with approximately 95 children ages 2-12 (before and after school also). So life is busy. Our economy has not been particularly good as I understand it is same in Ireland. I do think things are steady and not getting worse in the states. In some areas (not housing) things have picked up. I voted for Barack Obama and I believe he is very intelligent and level headed, but he inherited a mess. We live about 45 minutes drive from Washington D.C. in the western mountains which look similar to Ireland. I was married in the mountains last June in an area by Camp David where presidents spend holiday. Frederick County was a big farming area but more urban sprawl has taken over the farmland. This is very upsetting to many people, myself included. Fortunately, there is a effort to go back to farmers markets and local produce and recycling. Still it seems the states are so spread out and jobs are not in local communities so people must travel. We need some of the rain you all have been getting. Very dry summer here so corn and many crops are not good. Makes it more difficult for local farmers to sustain their way of life. Farming is definately more corporate owned here than local farming. I just read your latest Shannonbridge newsletter and appreciate your efforts to put the Potts history together. Just to help, Trumperant is the correct spelling and were owners of Correen Castle and various times and they married into the Potts family. I've just received a CD from Myles Monaghan who's father now owns the house. This CD includes the history for the house. I will check this CD out shortly. John Trumperant was the maternal uncle of the first William Potts who lived in Correen Castle and as far as I know at this point probably the first owner. As for the ring, the first William Potts of Correen sent the ring to his first cousin, named William Potts also, by transport through Temple in 1756. We have a letter that states this. I assume Temple is the embankment area now called Temple Bar (Barr). My family line comes from the Potts who left Ireland for the Barbadoes, eventually ending in Maryland, USA. William Potts received the ring on visit to England and I am the 9th generation of Potts to wear the ring and the first female. Our visit to Ireland was wonderful. The people of Ireland are very kind and hospitable. Life seems slower there. Since I've been back in the states the pace is hectic and I am trying to catch up on my work. I miss the slower way of life you are most fortunate to have in the beautiful island where you live. I will be in touch. The Birr Community Nursing Unit have developed a treat for their patients by taking them out for the night,Tuesday night it Shannonbridge was the choice.At 8pm the bus arrived in Shannonbridge and some ten residents of the Unit and family and helpers alighted.Among the patients were Tim Devery,Glebe,Kieran Curley,Crevagh and Joe Feighery from Brackagh.Lorraine Devery,Tim Devery's niece had arranged the Irish Traditinal Group to play music and some light refreshments were served in the two hours before they departed home at 10pm.
Phil Kelly nee Kearns and Kathleen Mc Cormack were two of the helpers looking afterthegroup.
Kathleen's parents were Mick Mc Cormack and Kathleen Mc Manus who once lived in Leitra.By coincidence Kathleen told us that she was a twin sister to Father Ignatius Mc Cormack who preached the homily at The Pattern in Clonmacnois on Sunday last.Kathleen promised to get a copy of the homily for posting on this web site.

Results for this years Tidy Town Competition were posted on the papers on Tuesday.
Today was generally dry with sunshine.The river level has risen and there is a good chunk of water on the callows.

Tuesday afternoon 14/9 an Aldo May from Chicago arrived with a framed photograph of the actor George Brent.Aldo was born in Taghmon Wexford,was baptised in St.Fintans Church.He emigrated to USA when he was fifteen.Aldo is now a retired Police Security Officer and he is on his 99th visit to Ireland at present.
Aldo told us that he has copies of every film that George Brent acted in and he has an amount of books about the films and the stars from that era.
He reckons that Chicago is a Daly City as a Daly served the longest period as Lord Mayor of Chicago and now his son has beaten that record.

Friends of Noel Fenton Doon, Nick and Barbara Mooney who stopped by on Wed 8th Sept and are now living in Tasmania told us that they had watched the TV program'3 Men Go To Ireland'which was shown in the last few weeks in Tasmania.They recognised Killeens dog Moby from the TV film.

Kate Thorhill was driving across the bridge at Shannonbridge on Sat 11th Sept when suddenly a group of small birds landed on the road in front of the car.Then a hawk swooped down,chose one of the birds and flew away.Bit like a live Lotto Draw.
On Monday while fishing on the backriver near the bridge observed a Sparrow Hawk chasing a Kingfisher bird.The Kingfisher dove into the water several times and happy ending it escaped free.

On Saturday Brid from Donegal visited Shannonbridge.Brid is a native Irish speaker and also a singer.She has her own webpage and has a number of songs in Irish for you to listen to.

It seems that what was probably the first post-office in Shannonbridge was located in what is now known as Prices House.The family that owned the house and operated the post office were named Charters.This family originally came from France and had connections in Portarlington.John Price bought the house from the Charters and the post office was then in Christy Cook's,which is the building now owned by Nugents Butcher-shop.After Mr and Mrs Cook died the post office moved to Fitzpatricks shop,now Shannonbidge Pottery shop.
After Fitzpatricks Richie Brown operated the post office for a time in the Fitzpatrick building.
The present post office is located in Morans Gala Store,
Over sixty years ago the post was delivered on bicycle to Shannonbridge from Ballinasloe.The man on the bike was Oliver O Grady.The post office authority erected a simple shelter near The Grand Gate for the use of post deliverer O Grady.He waited around for the day and collected the post in the evening to take it to Ballinasloe.

During this years Heritage Week Declan Ryan prepared a walkaround that started on the riverside.The walk and talk covered many aspects including the village bridge and the swivel bridge now a showpiece on the jetty,the Shannon Navigation and early work on the Shannon,the early fields works over 200 years ago and The Magazine and Fortifications.The site of Rachra Castle at Shannonbridge was visited and the site of the old Police Barracks and the Lockkeepers House beside the bridge.The event was most enjoyable and hopefully the notes used will be available for others to read.
Only this week I heard that Patrick Belton and his wife Kate were the Lockhouse Keepers.They had four children - Frank to California,Tim to Boston,Kate to USA and Annie who died in Ireland.
Frank Belton wrote a poem titled 'Memories of Shannonbridge'which was used on his memorial card.
Paddy had a son and niece - Jimmy and Sissy Belton who came from County Louth and Jimmy took charge of the Lockhouse and the Grand Canal Stores.Their sister Delia married John Price.

Many people call The Long Island upstream from Shannonbridge by the name Potts Island.The portion of the island nearer the village bridge is called Lamb Island and as was pointed out on the walkabout there lived Michael McCann who wrote O Donnell Abu.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report dated 13th Sept.2010
In a week or so the level of the river rose from a summer low of 2.1(Metres) to 2.95 on Friday,3.3 on the Saturday and 3.4 on Monday 13th.Wind is mainly from the west.
>Chris Soloman,Capetown fished Shannon 6/9 with dead roach and caught two ten pound pike.Good day.
>Thomas Huber AC Munich fished Shannon on 6/9 using wobbler to catch 4 pike best 90cm. Wet day.
>Stefan Varga was on the boat also and used worms to catch 20 perch.
>Maxi Huber AC Munich fished Shannon 6/9 in sunshine using wobbler to catch 3 pike best 85cm.
>Tobi Varga AC Munich fished Shannon 6/9 in sunshine using wobbler to catch 5 pike 70 to 85cm.
>Dietmund Bellnaghausen Germany fished Shannon 7/9 using wobbler on wet day catching 2 pike of 40 and 30cm.His first pike to catch.
>Adgius Malsan Germany fished Shannon 7/9 using a wobbler in the rain to catch a 60cm pike.Very happy.
>>Spence Family,Louth,Lincs fished Hot Water on rainy 6/9 using feeder and maggot catching 49 roach perch and hybrids. Bit slow they reckoned.
>Spence Family again fished Hot Water on 8/9 in sun and rain using feeder and maggot caster and sweetcorn catching 80 roach perch bream hybrids pike and tench.A 4lb tench,3lb perch and 2.5lbs pike best.Water rising.

On 8/8 Keith fished Grand Canal in sun and rain using 6M pole catching 30 roach,3 bream at 3.5lbs each,and one tench.Bit of weed on canal.
>Keith fished back of island at Shannonbridge on 9/9 in rain and sun using stick float and centre pin reel catching 40 roach to 2lbs,3 hybrids perch and loads of rudd.Water high.Using red maggot.
>Keith fished the same swim next day catching 25 roach, 3 rudd and no perch using long rod and red maggot.
>Keith again fished the flooded swim on the backwater on 13/9 in wind and rain using maggot to catch 47 roach and 2 rudd weighing 22 lbs.River up.
>Martin Owen Crewe fished the Suck on 12/9 in wind using maggot to catch bream roach and hybrids for 32 lbs.Fair catch.
>J.P.Jones Crewe also fished on River Suck using maggot to catch 20 lbs of bream and roach.

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes

Intermediate Football Championship.
Shannonbridge qualified for the Semi Final of the Intermediate Championship, overcoming Rhode by 2-9 to 0-7, at Mucklagh, on Sunday. Rhode were first to score, having two points on the board, before Paul Deeley opened Shannonbridge’s account after eight minutes. They were still in arrears 0-3 to 0-4, when Dermot Turley and Rhode’s Gareth Hickey were dismissed after twenty minutes. Shannonbridge got a lift from a monster point, from a free, by Anthony Kelly before Eamon Kelly, who had moved to full forward in a switch with Trevor Mahon, laid on a defence splitting pass for his brother Declan to score a goal on twenty seven minutes. Half time score 1-5 to 0-5. Rhode were again first to score after the break and but for a shot that hit the angle of the post and cross-bar and, somehow, stayed out and a couple of fine saves by Liam Griffin would have taken the lead. Shannonbridge upped their game as the half wore on and the best score of the day was a point in the twenty second minute by Karol Kelly, after Kieran Flannery, Anthony Kelly and Colm Kenny were involved in a movement that covered the length of the field. Shannonbridge closed the scoring when a Trevor Mahon ‘forty five’ was dispatched to the net by Karol Kelly. They will now meet Durrow in the Semi-Final. Some further items on Correen Castle.

Louisa was interested in the owners of Correen Castle since the Potts
were in residence.
Last night I was talking to two neighbours about this and they told me
that after Potts it was Kenny then Caley or Kaley,then Major
Lloyd,then Don Beddy and present owner is Doctor John Monaghan.
Many of the Potts names on the family tree line were William Trumpeter
Potts and the two locals told me that the first Potts was a trumpeter
for Oliver Cromwell when he invaded Ireland in the mid 1600's
A John Rigney was the driver for the last Potts in Correen and the
transport was a horse or pony and cart.
I have been told that the last Potts in Correen Castle died in Africa

Five people - Fiona Keyes,Ciaran Hoey,Warren O'Hare,Michelle Murray and Adam Lynch arrived in Shannonbridge on Tuesday 7th September.The group
had decided to walk from Lucan to Galway on a charity walk in aid of Cystic Fibrosis.Starting on Saturday they had already stopped over at Allenwood,Daingean,The Blueball near Tullamore, and Shannonbridge and have plans to stopover at Kilconnell and Athenry and then on to Galway.
By Tuesday they had raised 1500 Euros for the cause

Shannonbridge in Intermediate Quarter Final Next Sunday.

Shannonbridge play Rhode in the Quarter Final of the Intermediate Championship next Sunday, 12th Sept, in Mucklagh. The game kicks off at 12.00 noon. Wishing the lads the best of luck and all support will be very much appreciated.

On Monday 5th September Louisa Potts from Maryland USA stopped by on her honeymoon.Louisa has a great interest in the Potts Family who once lived in Correen Castle as her family are from the same Potts Lineage.She had looked at the Shannonbridge website and copied some comments posted there when some years ago an Alison Munson was in Ireland seeking information on the same Potts family.
Louisa was wearing a gold ring that had been handed down through the Potts family for generations.
The ring was intended to be worn by a male member of the family.Louisa's father had no sons and so it was passed on to her.Louisa has two daughters Kathryn and Alison so it looks like another woman will be the next wearer.The ring has been passed down through nine lines of the Pott Family to date.
Louisa has a neatly line of the Potts Family which they promised to share with this website.
Louisa has tried to contact Alison Munson without success.I had a look at my computer contacts and there at the very top was Alison Munson.Her e-mail address may have changed in the meantime but when I went downstairs to give it to Louisa alas she had departed.

Intermediate Football Championship.
Shannonbridge qualified for the knockout stages of the championship when defeating Clara, at Ferbane, on Wednesday night last. Shannonbridge got off to the best possible start with a goal from Declan Kelly in the first minute and led by 1-4 to 0-1 after 17 minutes. A Clara revival in the second quarter saw them score four points in five minutes – 1-5 to 0-4. Shannonbridge closed the scoring to lead at half-time by 1-9 to 0-4. The second half start was a carbon copy of the first, with a Kieran Flannery goal in the first minute. Clara were then awarded a penalty, but when Liam Griffin saved, their chance of getting back into the game was gone. Shannonbridge ran out comfortable winners on a score line of 2-15 to 0-9.
