FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Vocations Sunday
Eucharist and priesthood were born in the Upper Room in Jerusalem on Holy Thursday night. The two gifts are inextricably linked. Without priests we are deprived of the nourishment of the Eucharist. This fact should give us pause for thought on Vocations Sunday. Vocation to priesthood is a gift from God, but grows and is nurtured within family and community. Without support, encouragement and even invitation, the call will wither and die. ‘It takes a village to raise a child’, according to the African proverb. We might well say that it takes a community to make a priest. The eternally challenging words of Pope St. Paul VI come to mind here: ‘Every generation gets the vocations it deserves’. This day, of course, has awider reach. It is a day for all the baptised. The mission of the Church is the mission of all. When someone utters the words, ‘I am on a mission’, you know that he/she is embarked on a task that is important & urgent. The mission of all in the Church family is nothing less than making the Lord’s word heard and His face visible. There is no more privileged, more important or more urgent work than that. Since lay people form the majority of the Church family, their role in this work is critical. They accomplish this work most effectively through the general witness of their daily lives. Holiness in the family and in the workplace takes on a very ordinary appearance. Laity, not clergy, are the most important people in the Church. They hold the key to the future. The ministry of priests & religious will be centred on supporting the mission of the laity.

            Everybody Knows:
You can't be all things to all people. You can't do all things at once. You can't do all things equally well. You can't do all things better than everyone else. Your humanity is showing just like everyone else's.
So:  You have to find out who you are, and be that. You have to decide what comes first, and do that. You have to discover your strengths, and use them. You have to learn not to compete with others, Because no one else is in the contest of *being you*.
Then: You will have learned to accept your own uniqueness. You will have learned to set priorities and make decisions. You will have learned to live with your limitations. You will have learned to give yourself the respect that is due. And you'll be a most vital mortal.
Dare To Believe: That you are a wonderful, unique person. That you are a once-in-all-history event. That it's more than a right, it's your duty, to be who you are. That life is not a problem to solve, but a gift to cherish. And you'll be able to stay one up on what used to get you down. Author Unknown

Such a denial of the rights of children to have a loving relationship with both parents has long-lasting and damaging consequences for a child. Log on to  www.alienated.ie. For more information
A PRAYER  We pray for families where parents & children suffer because there is domestic violence; may they get the assistance they need to protect those who are vulnerable. We pray, particularly today for children who are unjustly separated from a parent, that they may know the joy of their love & care again. Lord, hear us.

VOCATIONS— A Prayer
This Sunday, Good Shepherd Sunday is Vocation Sunday. It is a day when we are asked especially to pray for Religious Vocations, for our Church in our time. God, You call each one of us to contribute to Your kingdom. Despite our insecurity, You reassure us always us that we have something to offer as we try to listen to Your call. We pray for integrity of heart, clarity of mind, and a deep yearning to love and serve others wherever that might take us: for deep peace about our future and for God’s light in our eyes...we pray. AMEN.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
“The Confusion of Faith
On Good Friday the disciples were frightened and disillusioned. They went into hiding for fear of the Jews. Their hopes were dashed, their dreams unfulfilled. The man in whom they placed their trust was nailed to the cross as a common criminal. Their very survival in Jerusalem looked perilous and two of them decided to get out of town and travelled to Emmaus – anywhere to get away.
And then the confusion started. The women at the tomb had discovered it empty on Easter Sunday and an angel told them Jesus had risen from the dead. The two on the road had encountered Jesus, but he had disappeared again from them. Some of the Apostles in hiding had been visited by the Risen Jesus, though Thomas was unconvinced and the others were not sure that it was not a ghost they had seen. Then today he appeared to them again and this time he ate food and explained the scriptures to them. They were overcome with joy.
The gift of faith is given by God to those whom he has chosen. We have been gifted and are asked to be witnesses to the faith in all we say or do. From despair through fear, to confusion then to joy, the disciples of Jesus made their faith journey. We endeavour to follow in their footsteps – along the pathway known as “The Confusion of Faith.”

THE POSTAGE STAMP LESSON
There was a little postage stamp No bigger than your thumb. But still it stuck right to the job Until the work was done. They licked it and they pounded it ‘Till it would make you sick; And the more it took a lickin’ The better it would stick. Let’s all be like the postage stamp In playing life’s rough game; And just keep a-stickin’ Tho’ we hang our heads in shame. The stamp stuck to the letter ‘Till it saw it safely through; There’s no one can do better Let’s keep sticking and be true. Anonymous

3rd Sunday of Easter `From darkness to light In all the Easter work of Jesus, he led the disciples out of darkness into light, out of sadness into joy, out of isolation into community, giving the living bread of hope for the dry bread of disappointment. He did this by sharing himself with them, sharing the scripture that spoke of him, and the bread that was his body. No long instructions, no long exhortations, just the openness of sharing himself with them. This is his plea to us, his Church: be light in darkness, be joy in sadness, be community in isolation, be Eucharist to dry bread, be wholeness to broken  (Fr. Donal Neary SJ)

Lord, today I choose to release all that holds me back. Help me to let go of the past, to let go of bitterness, to let go of failures and missed opportunities. Help me today to embrace your grace in my life, that I may live it to the full and help me be a blessing to others. Amen -Fr. Richard Gibbons, Knock

No matter how you are emotionally, mentally, physically, Invite hope into your life. Allow hope to enter into your mind. Allow hope to enter into your spirit. Allow hope to enter into your body. Allow yourself to be filled with hope. Imagine the Spirit of Jesus stirring up newness, finding the dead places that exist within your spirit, and creating a meadow of flowers inside of you. Visualise this open space, the flower buds unfolding, filling the spacious meadow with colour and fragrance. Let hope fill your mind with a sense of purpose and direction. Let hope fill your spirit with life and enthusiasm. Let hope fill your heart and draw you into renewed love. Rest quietly in your restored hope. Let the power of Risen Love reign in your heart. -Joyce Rupp

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

A quieter day, but Easter glory still fills the air. Behind closed doors, the disciples are dazed and dispirited. Then Jesus appears, but Thomas is not there. An annual reminder here of the power and importance of praying with the community. Eight days later Thomas is present with the community. He encounters the Lord, his questions are answered and his life is changed forever. The doubting disciple is moved to utter, in five short words, the most profound profession of faith in the entire Gospel: ‘My Lord and my God’. He will now become one of the foundation stones of the fledgling Church. The message is clear. We absent ourselves from the community gathering at a cost. At this time, our gathering is from a distance from necessity, but even from a distance we are nourished and strengthened. Thomas recognises Jesus in His hands. The story of our lives is etched in our hands. The fruits of caring, giving and loving are there for the world to see. Jesus’ love for us led Him to the Cross & when Thomas saw the hands, he remembered, he understood & he believed.

A Prayer to be Merciful Help me. O Lord, that my eyes may be merciful, so that I may never suspect or judge from appearances, but look for what is beautiful in my neighbour's soul. PASTORAL EASTER MESSAGE OF BISHOP FRANCIS DUFFY, “We are an Easter people: our faith in the risen Lord remains undimmed” can be viewed online at ardaghdiocese.ie & on parish blog & FB

Thomas!

1)These things did Thomas hold for real:

The warmth of blood,  the chill of steel,  the grain of wood,  the heft of stone,

the last frail twitch of blood and bone.

2)His brittle certainties denied

That one could live when one had died, until his fingers read like Braille

the markings of the spear and nail.

3)May we, O God, by grace believe And, in believing, still receive the Christ who held His raw palms out and beckoned Thomas from his doubt. [Thomas Troeger]

A NIGHT PRAYER Lord You bless us as we rest, Restore us as we sleep You care for us as we drift off And hold us in our dreams. You are the safest place, You are the God of Grace. Forgiven, loved and held by You Is each small seed of faith. You know our thoughts and feelings, You see our deep desires. You understand our weariness and catch each tear we cry. You walk beside us every day, You are our faithful friend.

AN EASTER PRAYER Lord of all life, You are our hope and our joy, our source of true happiness. We have journeyed to Easter and in the most difficult of trials we have renewed our baptism and proclaimed your resurrection. We embrace with gladness the new life to which you call each one of us. Bless us, our families and all the world, with your constant presence and protection. May we give you thanks every day and share the good news of our faith with all we meet. And may the light of our Easter faith guide our footsteps in your ways of love, peace and truth. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. In Easter joy we proclaim, Christ is risen! Alleluia, alleluia!
