SIXTH  SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

‘Blessed are you who are poor’.

Mexican poet Amado Nervo was surely reflecting on the inspiring words of Jesus in today’s Gospel when he penned the beautiful lines: “the world told me that I was only a beggar but Jesus told me I am a king”. In His ‘Sermon on the Plain’, the Lord utters four remarkable and revolutionary blessings. They are known as the Beatitudes, and they turn the values of the world upside down. The poor will inherit the kingdom of God; the hungry will be satisfied; the tearful will laugh; the persecuted will be rewarded. Where the world sees losers Jesus sees winners; what the world calls wretched He calls blessed; what the world holds contemptible He holds to His heart. It is little wonder that the Beatitudes have also been called ‘Beautiful  Attitudes’ for living

FORMATION OF A NEW PASTORAL COUNCIL

We are as a Parish deeply grateful for the roles played in our parishes as we approach a Diocesan Assembly by so many parishioners both individually and on bodies like our own Parish Pastoral Council (PPC). The PPC is a consultative body of the faithful, representative of the whole parish community, willing to work in close partnership with the priest(s) of the parish to further the mission of Christ and his Church. The PPC shares the responsibility for building the parish into a vibrant Christian community that promotes the Gospel values of love, justice and peace. Promoting the prayer life and faith life of the parish.

It is planned to have a Nomination Form for parishioners on the weekends of March 5/6th and 12/13th where Two  nominees of your choice are put forward. From the Nominations received we form a Ballot Paper.

It may be helpful to consider a few things. The PPC does not “run the parish.” That is the responsibility of others. The emphasis should be on pastoral. While issues of finance, maintenance and administration come up– it is only meant to be in relation to furthering the pastoral goal of a parish. PPCs are not a representative group in the parliamentary sense. There should be a broader mind-set. Members of a PPC are there because they care. They care for the parish which is a community of faith and the PPC is there to further overall care.  I will write more about this.

Material drawn from  “The Power within– PPCs today”.

A Prayer to St. Valentine

Feast-14th February

Loving Father,

I pray for an open heart and mind, so that I

may recognise and be grateful for all the love in my life. I pray that I might find a new sense of wholeness, joy and peace in your love.  Remove all obstacles so that I may grow in  love throughout my life. Give me the grace to trust in your loving plan for me, so that whatever my circumstances over the course  of my life, I may know that I am not alone,  that I am loved by You, my loving Father, who is full of tenderness, mercy and  compassion. Amen.

“Dear brothers and sisters, to the intercession of Mary, Health of the Infirm, I entrust all the sick and their families. United with Christ, who bears the pain of the world, may they find meaning, consolation and trust. I pray for healthcare workers everywhere, that, rich in mercy, they may offer patients, together with suitable care, their fraternal closeness.” Pope Francis

 FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

“Push out into the deep water’

It is said that, when the early Irish monks set out to preach the Gospel in new territories, they never used sails on their boats. They trusted that the Holy Spirit would guide them to wherever they were meant to go. In other words they took risks for the faith, and the fruits of their labours speak for themselves. They must have been inspired by the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel when He instructs His disciples to cast their nets into ‘deep water’. It was a hard call. Here was the son of a carpenter instructing expert fishermen on how to fish, but they obeyed and they were rewarded with an abundant catch. His call goes out anew to every generation. We, like those early disciples, must go to unlikely places; reach out to unlikely people; persevere in unpromising situations; sing His song on alien soil. The rest is in His hands. With great risk often comes great rewards. As legendary American Football coach Vince Lombardi once said: ‘The man on top of the mountain did not fall there’

Friday 11th Feb : Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. World Day of Prayer for the Sick. It may still not be possible to visit those who are ill but perhaps this week you could text, phone or send a card to a neighbour, friend or family in hospital or nursing home or going through a time of illness. Maybe light a candle on Friday to symbolize that prayer : Our Lady of Lourdes pray for us. St. Bernadette pray for us. Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes Feast – 11th February O Holy Virgin, in the midst of your days of glory, do not forget the sorrows of this earth. Cast a merciful glance upon those who are suffering, struggling against difficulties, with their lips constantly pressed against life’s bitter cup. Have pity on those who love each other and are separated. Have pity on our rebellious hearts. Have pity on our weak faith. Have pity on those we love. Have pity on those who weep, on those who pray, on those who fear. Grant hope and peace to all. Amen.

A Prayer for the Sick May our Lord Jesus Christ lay his hands upon you. May his love and peace fill your heart and soul May his healing power flow into every corner of your being, to make you well and strong, to ease your aches and pains, to give you peace of mind and courage of heart, and patience in your trials. May he go before you to lead you, be behind you to guard you, and always be at your side to support you. Amen.
