 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Nothing but Jesus - Donal Neary S.J.

We all need some statements like Peter’s that give a rock and a meaning to life. It gives us a clue of where we belong at deeper levels. We all need statements that express our faith in God. For Peter it was his faith in Jesus, the son of God. This would keep him going all of

his life, even at times of unfaithfulness and danger. He could never forget that he had said, ‘you are the Christ, the son of the living God’. We might wonder who or what is a living God for us? Where we might put our basic trust?

What is it that, if taken away, we would be lost without? We can give our lives to family, country, a political party, money. Some of these are worth our trust and some not so much. We need the rock that Peter found in Jesus. He was called the rock only because of his

relationship with Jesus Christ, the one who calls forth our faith and love and gives our lives a huge meaning.

It’s not that we have nothing but Jesus - it’s that we can integrate all that is important in life within our trust in him. It is God who reveals Jesus to us. We want to give this to our younger people - a rock they can stand on in life, which nothing can demolish. This is Jesus, and in him all is created. Recall strong convictions in your life. Ask that they may be strengthened. Lord, be my rock, my stronghold, my safety

The number of people with the coronavirus in Ireland has risen sharply despite the government restrictions. Twice as many cases were announced last week. There were sixtyeight news cases last Sunday. We must be vigilant as there is still danger and threat to our lives from the virus. The authorities advise us to: Maintain social distancing, keep two meters apart fromother people.Meet people out of doors as far as possible. Practise hand washing. Wear a face mask in all public places.Download the Covid-19 App.

PRAYER TO ST. BARTHOLMEW Feast Day 24th August O Glorious Saint Bartholomew, Jesus called you a person without guile and you saw in this word a sign that he was the Son of God and King of Israel. Obtain for us the grace to be ever guileless and innocent as doves. At the same time, help us to have your gift of faith to see the Divine hand in the events of daily life May we discern the signs of the times that lead to Jesus on earth and will eventually unite us to him forever in heaven.  Amen

A PRAYER FOR THIS TIME  Lord Jesus, generous healer, stay with us in our time of anxiety and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace.  Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk. May they know your protection and peace. Amen

CHURCH COLLECTIONS – Many thanks to all in these most difficult times who so kindly continue to contribute to our collection every week.  A PRAYER …….Lord, you are . . .

Lord, you are my island, in your bosom I rest You are the calm of the sea, in that place I stay You are the song of the birds, in that tune is my joy You are the breaking waves on the rock, your praise is echoed in the swell You are the Lord of my life, in you I live You are the Lord of eternity, to you I commend my spirit – Amen

FACE COVERINGS In solidarity with the vast majority of our fellow citizens who actively promote and pursue as safe an environment as possible – in their homes, their places of work and places where they shop or gather, the Diocese of Ardagh & Clonmacnois now ‘strongly recommends’ the wearing of face coverings in addition to the continuation of social distancing and sanitising in all its Churches and buildings as public Masses and services resume

OUR LADY OF KNOCK, Queen of Ireland, you gave hope to your people in a time of distress and comforted them in sorrow. You have inspired countless pilgrims to pray with confidence to your divine Son, remembering His promise, “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find.” Help me to remember that we are all pilgrims on the road to heaven. Fill me with love and concern for my brothers and sisters in Christ, especially those who live with me. Comfort me when I am sick, lonely or depressed. Teach me how to take part ever more reverently in the Holy Mass. Give me a greater love of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Pray for me now and at the hour of my death. Amen.

 MARY’S ASSUMPTION

This Saturday we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. The Irish people called this day Lá Fhéile Muire san Fhómhar, Mary’s Feast in Autumn. Devotion to Our Lady is a feature of our faith because she is the Mother of God; the mother of our Saviour. She accepted the Word of God in her heart and body and she gave life to the world. Every time we say the Hail Mary, we ask Our Lady to protect us especially at the hour of our death when we stand before the Judge of the living and the dead. The 15th-23rd August is National Heritage Week organised by the National Council of Ireland. It is the most comprehensive heritage event in Ireland but this year there will be no assemblies due to the Coronavirus, but people may participate in the events online. We have a rich heritage in Ireland including storytelling, singing, craft, sport, music, blessed wells, Mass Rocks, monuments, flora, fauna, natural habitats, rivers and lakes. Let us respect and conserve it. God be praised forever.

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time WOMAN, YOU HAVE GREAT FAITH

This is the only occasion in which Jesus was outside Jewish territory. He visits the region of Tyre and Sidon, modern-day Lebanon, where He is approached by a Canaanite woman who pleads with Him to heal her daughter. It’s a puzzling encounter. At first, He appears to ignore her. Then he seems almost indifferent to her appeal, reminding her that His mission is to “the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” The woman’s persistence wins out in the end. She is the only person in the New Testament who manages to change Jesus’ mind, or so it seems! More likely, He is testing her faith and showing her that God’s delays are not His denials. God tests; Satan tempts! He doesn’t test us to  see if we are worthy, but to see if we are ready. Sometimes He stands back in order to increase our desire for Him and our appreciation if His  gifts. We see in the words and actions of this unnamed woman, an “outsider” and a “foreigner”, the very essence of the faith journey. As people of faith, we will be tested often; we will experience the silence of God, but the challenge is to wait and to persevere. Perseverance separates the winners from the losers in sport and in life and in faith. “Woman”, said Jesus, “you have great faith”.

 NOTICE FOR OFFALY PARISHES

August 8th 2020
Dear Father,
In accordance with the latest Government measures to address the spread of the virus all public Masses and Church ceremonies in the  County Offaly part of our diocese are suspended for a period of two weeks from midnight Friday August 7th.

The only exception is a Funeral Mass where the guidelines specifically state that Attendance at a funeral service and burial or cremation ceremony should be limited to 25 people.

Churches remain open for private prayer.  Masses can be broadcast online, without a congregation.

This is difficult news for everyone in the community but is it a measure taken to safeguard health and life.  For parishes it means that Confirmations and Baptisms and perhaps some other ceremonies will have to be rescheduled once again.

The Government advice is available at
https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/7b237-special-advice-for-those-living-in-kildare-laois-and-offaly-friday-7-august-2020/

With every good wish,
Francis Duffy

 From M to M for M.M.

(From Malin to Mizen for Multiple Myeloma)

Many parishioners know John O'Regan, one of our friendly Tour Guides in Clonmacnois Visitor Centre. A few weeks into our lockdown, John was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and is currently undergoing treatment at Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, Ireland.

His son Kevin (with a wonky knee & childlike trust)  is undertaking a 1,000 mile cycle from Malin to Mizen Head (with many scenic detours- including ourselves!).  The goal is to raise funds and awareness and he would love to meet up with people, or even better cycle part of the way with him.

Monday, August 24th should see Kevin cycle from Athlone to Kinvara (via Clonmacnois). I can give the other route sections—just ask.  Cyclists welcome! If you prefer funds can be left in trust with me.

“Taken Up Body And Soul….” - Fr. Kevin Lyons From his cross, Jesus entrusted his mother to the care of St. John. Legend has it that John left Jerusalem with Mary and took her to the city of Ephesus on the shores of the Aegean Sea. There he provided her with a dwelling and some believe that it was from this location that Mary, aged legend relates about the mid sixties, was assumed into heaven. On November 1st 1950, Pope Pius XII declared solemnly that ‘The Immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, when the course of her earthly life had concluded, was taken up body and soul into heaven’. Mary’s original home, destroyed by earthquakes, was rebuilt on its foundation and is now a shrine. I was privileged to celebrate Mass there in 1974. The Church sees Mary’s image in the Book of Revelations as ‘The woman robed with the sun, the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of 12 stars’ (Rev. 12:1).

Today we pause and celebrate a woman who stands out as a model of service and discipleship for all of us. Remember how Elizabeth greeted Mary at Ain Karim ‘How does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?’ At a time when we hear the disciples ask the wrong questions – Who is the greatest? How often must I forgive? – Elizabeth’s question is spot on. How is it I am so blessed? That is the question that will lead us to a better life. This is the question the saints have asked, that Mary asked. This is the question that, if we ask it, will give us the strength to endure the hardships of life, and perhaps more important, will ensure that blessings will not go unnoticed. What a sad life to be blessed and not know it! In Luke and the Acts of the Apostles we encounter a woman who is at once our mother and our guide. Mary is a mother, not only in the sense that she agreed to give birth to Jesus, but she also allowed herself to be inspired and directed by the living word of God in all she said and did. Mary agreed to ‘mother the word’, to ponder it and to bring it to birth in words and deeds, ‘blessed is the womb that bore you … blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it (Luke 11). It is Mary’s privilege to sing the Magnificat, a song composed of an amalgam of texts from the Hebrew Scriptures, all of which are shown as coming to fulfilment in Jesus. Mary’s song also anticipates what Jesus will preach regarding wealth and power. Some may covet both but it has no lasting value in God’s eyes. Rather it is those who are poor and lowly who are God’s cherished ones. Through Simeon in the Temple, Luke announced that Mary would be the humble participant in the saving but sorrowful act of salvation, ‘your own soul a sword shall pierce’ (Luke 2: 35). Mary was inconspicuous but nevertheless present at every moment in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus and she remained present to the disciples in the post-Easter era. In her capacity as mother and guide, Mary continues to be a living resource for all of us.

 19th  SUNDAY IN

ORDINARY TIME

‘TELL ME TO COME TO YOU ACROSS THE WATER’ ‘When you walk through the storm, hold your head up high’. These words from the famous Liverpool F.C. anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ come to mind as we reflect on the dramatic episode described in today’s Gospel extract. Peter leaps from the boat to go to meet Jesus. When he keeps his eyes on Jesus, he literally walks on water and is safe. When he looks down, he falters and sinks. If we lose sight of Jesus, we will falter. If we keep our eyes fixed on Him, we will be able to negotiate even the harshest storms. The episode is also a reminder to us that the Lord is constantly inviting us to step out in faith, to change, to grow, to explore new paths, to reach for new horizons, to reach our full potential. More importantly, He is telling us that He will always be there to hold us up when we fall and fail. We will not walk alone. ‘When you step out in faith, you walk into your purpose’. If you never venture out of the pond that you are in you will never know that there is a sea, an ocean’.

 A WISE HEART

THERE is a language of the head that

we need to know to plot a way through the varied decisions we need to make in life. There is a wisdom of the heart we need to know too to make up for the limitations of the head. Because sometimes the heart can see what the head can miss. And vice versa. Both a ‘discerning judgement’ and a ‘wise heart’ help us to make right choices for ourselves, choices that in turn are right for others

 NOTE ON CONFIRMATION

Dear Parent

I write to you with a heavy heart to confirm the news you had heard regarding public health advice for our County. It means that following advice,  we cannot have Confirmation Aug 22nd at 1pm in Ferbane Church. All Services are online while churches remain open for private prayer.  I have been in touch with Bishop Francis Duffy  to seek his direction and advice.  The present restrictions expire at Midnight on Sunday August 23rd. I cannot see it is helpful to defer Confirmation  to the following weekend (Aug 29/30) when we cannot predict the success or not of these measures in suppressing the Virus. The goal is to prevent community transmission so Confirming the children is one thing- it would  also make family gatherings practically impossible. (capped at 6)

To queries of outdoor gatherings- the public health advice is a maximum of 15 people. Having a “Car Park” style Confirmation with people coming in intervals to be Confirmed would not be worthy of the Sacrament. Clonmacnois Site is also closed down- even if it were not, permission would be needed from OPW nationally.

This is a public health emergency, which I know we all struggle with. I am aware of the commitments, cost and sheer emotional toll all this is taking on you. But we need to be patient.  Confirmation can wait until we have a clearance from the authorities and celebrate worthily and fully and safely.

Please be assured of a place in my prayers for you as we all endeavour to keep one another safe. Beannachtaí

 ONE DAY .

. . . as he began his daily prayer, a holy hermit saw passing by a mother begging for food for her hungry child. They were badly dressed, had no shoes and were part of a larger group of people, moving around the country desperately searching for help. Seeing them, the holy man turned to God and  said “Great God! How is it that such a loving Creator can see so much suffering and yet do nothing about it?”And deep within his heart he heard God reply “I have done something

about it. I made you.”

CEMETERY  WEEKEND

This weekend  we remember and pray for all our dear departed loved ones and especially those who have been laid to rest in our cemetery in the past year. May they rest in peace. Amen

Cemetery Prayer.\

May God’s perpetual light shine upon

the faces of all laid to rest here. May the lives they lived in our homes continue to inspire and to guide us on the way.

May the memories we carry and share in stories, keep them part of our lives and part of our family.

May the gentle Summer rains fall like tears from the skies of Heaven to bless them.

May the wild flowers and the Summer meadows whisper their prayer in the gentle breeze of silence.

May the birds of the dawn chorus sing their prayer of the beauty and joy of Heaven.

May we always reverence this sacred clay as the holy ground that holds seeds of hope. May each time we visit, walk, sit, pray and listen here bring us closer to the heart of God’s kindness.

May the Angels guide them, the Saints protect them

and the prayer of Mary hold them in the

light

‘GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO EAT’ The ‘Feeding of the Multitude’ is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels. Its’ significance lay in the fact that it recalled the feeding of the chosen people with manna in the desert during the Exodus and it prefigured the institution of the Eucharist in the Upper Room on the first Holy Thursday evening when Jesus would feed the disciples with food infinitely more precious than manna, namely His Body and Blood. ‘There is nothing so great as the Eucharist’ (St. John Vianney). It is the supreme proof of the love of Jesus. It is the source and summit of the Christian life… Isn’t it thought-provoking that this miracle by the lake was made possible by the seemingly insignificant gift of five loaves and two fish. The little we have to offer, if given generously, will always be more than enough. With that in mind we should pray often the beautiful words composed by the Mexican poet Amado Nervo: ‘I’m only a spark, make me a fire; I’m only a string, make me a lyre; I’m only an ant-hill, make me a mountain; I’m only a drop, make me a fountain; I’m only a feather, make me a wing’.
