 26th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘The first son thought better of it and went’.
In a sense, both brothers were wrong. The actions of the first son is more commendable. At first, he refused his father’s request to go to work in the vineyard. Then he found his better self and went. His change of mind reminds us that first reactions aren’t always the best. Second thoughts are worthwhile. It’s never too late to do the right thing. The second son agreed to go to the vineyard, but he didn’t go. He broke his promise. The world survives on the basis of people keeping their word. The destruction of our planet, the growth of division between peoples, the loss of confidence in institutions, the deepening uncertainty with regard to the future, can all be traced back to broken promises. For every promise there is a price to pay. The ideal for the Christian is to make promise and practice rhyme. When deeds and words are in accord, the whole world is transformed. Both brothers fell short!

The Deep End - Good Intentions During the recent ‘lockdown’ due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people found themselves turning to nature. There was a surge of interest in gardening. We tended to flower beds, planted seeds, started herb gardens. Lots of people commented that they noticed the birds singing for the first time in years. In the midst of challenging times, we found ourselves tuning in to the wonder of God’s creation all around us. As life begins to return to ‘normal’, can we retain this sense of wonder and awe? In this Season of Creation, we are invited to discover the presence of God in creation, to give thanks for the gift of the earth, and to change our ways so that we may live in harmony with creation. This requires us to be constantly conscious of how we are living – to not just have good intentions but to follow through in our actions. In today’s gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the two sons who are asked to go and work in their father’s vineyard. The first son initially refuses, but then thinks better of it and gets to work. While the second son has good intentions, he doesn’t follow through. When it comes to caring for the earth, good intentions are not enough. Our actions matter. We may have been careless in the past but a change of heart is happening, right across our society. It all starts with our actions, as individuals and communities. As we emerge from a challenging few months, let us use the Season of Creation to reflect on how we can do better – to reconnect with God’s beautiful creation and do all we can to love and preserve it. ‘Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognise that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light.’ (Pope Francis, Laudato Si) -Triona Doherty

MISSION MONTH October is Mission Month, a month where we are called to support and pray with and for our missionaries. Ireland has a long history of missionaries serving in the most deprived parts of the world and this tradition continues today with Irish missionaries working in many developing countries as well as in the developed world with projects that support and enable disadvantaged communities. During this month, parishioners are encouraged to pray for our missionaries abroad and those discerning the vocation to mission - we are also invited to support the work of the missionaries and this can be done on the weekend of October 17/18th where a special collection will be taken up.
PRAYER TO ST. THERESE O Little Therese of the Child Jesus, please pick for me a rose from the heavenly gardens and send it to me as a message of love. O Little Flower of Jesus, ask God to grant the favours I now place with confidence in your hands . . (mention in silence here) St. Therese, help me to always believe as you did in God's great love for me, so that I might imitate your "Little Way" each day. Amen
VOCATION PRAYER God our Father, send workers into your harvest.
May the Spirit we received in baptism
Touch the hearts of many
To offer themselves in priesthood, religious life
And other forms of service.
Give the parents and families of our diocese
The wisdom and courage to support young people
in searching for and following the call of God in their lives.
Amen

25th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘Why be envious because I am generous’?
The crops in Palestine ripened at the end of September. The rains came two weeks later. The window of opportunity was short. The need for workers was urgent. The eleventh-hour arrivals were not idlers. They weren’t chosen. The weak must always wait, but the Lord’s ways are not our ways and the last shall be first. For Him, peoples’ needs always came before their accomplishments. He does not give based on the greatness of our merits, but on the greatness of His compassion. His giving is not dependent on our doing. He doesn’t ask us to be deserving but to be receptive. Those who worked all day were not treated unjustly. They were paid enough, but they couldn’t enjoy what they had when they coveted what they had not. ‘Envy is the pain caused by the good fortune of others’ (Aristotle). The word envy derives from the Latin ‘invidia’ meaning ‘non-sight’. It leads to a form of blindness. It is one of the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ and is usually directed towards those amongst whom we live and work. ‘Beggars do not envy millionaires; they envy other beggars who are more successful’ (Bertrand Russell). We should never be envious of what God gives to others. We begin to overcome envy by being grateful, rather, for what He has given to us.

‘Resilience’. From BBC Thought for the Day..
That’s the word I hear most often to describe a stoic response to the Coronavirus. But, there’s a problem with resilience. The original Latin means ‘to recoil or rebound’. Resilience suggests that we can spring back to where we were before - something which, usually, is simply not possible. Whatever ordeal we’ve endured, the future presents a fresh reality. In Coronavirus terms, it’s our ‘new normal’. In Hebrew, we use the term ‘nechama’, which means ‘comfort or solace’. Its Biblical usage implies change, recognising that as one emerges from a traumatic experience, a paradigm shift is called for. Nechama is about becoming, not overcoming. It is not a process of closure, but disclosure – of a previously dormant perspective which now comes to the fore. The Jewish understanding of such profound change in ourselves is shaped by Rosh Hashanah, or New Year, which commences this evening. Looking back on the previous year, we strive to take control of the way it has changed us, to empower us to embark on a new year with renewed purpose. To do this effectively, gratitude for what we have is everything. As the Talmud teaches: Who is wealthy? It’s one who is happy with what they’ve got. According to Jewish tradition, New Year is the anniversary of the creation of the very first person and, over the festival, we contemplate on the lives led by Adam and Eve, their achievements and their failings. They lost their paradise because, while blessed with the unparalleled bounties of Eden, their only desire was the one thing they couldn’t have – the forbidden fruit - and it was this which led to their downfall. Covid-19 is prompting us to re-evaluate our lives. Instead of pining after that which is out of our reach, we can now appreciate life more than ever before, to use every moment constructively. Many people I’ve spoken to have found a renewed appreciation of family and friends, of spirituality and community, and just the simple pleasure of socialising. “Is your glass half empty or half full?” The answer given by the boy in Charlie Mackesy’s, “The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse” is, “I think I’m grateful to have a glass”. Jewish tradition differentiates between fate and destiny. My fate is the hand of cards I’m dealt. My destiny is how I play that hand. In the midst of this tragic Pandemic, a good start to carving out a destiny of hope and promise is being grateful for the glass we have

COVID-19 - A Few Words of Encouragement
I am really sorry to see how things are shaping up in Dublin, where I have so many family and friends, as well as in other areas of the country. I know that the steady growth in the numbers of COVID-19 infections brings with it an huge amount of anxiety and stress. Please God people will rediscover the solidarity that is needed to bring the numbers down.
We should not take for granted our significantly lower rates of infection in this part of the country. I am very grateful to all our parishioners, including the families of children being Confirmed in these weeks, for their wonderful cooperation with all the pastoral and public health provisions that have been put in place, including the increase in the number of people wearing face-coverings at Mass. Please keep up the good work. Stay safe and keep one another safe
UPDATING CHURCH CARE ROTA
It is good to pray together once again and we thank everyone for their help in making this possible in Stewarding, sanitising and Church Cleaning (Church Care). We need to update our Cleaning Rota and if you would like to REMAIN on the Rota, would you please contact me (086 8319500) to indicate that.  In other words—opt in.
To ensure our safety, please remember
-the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is extended
-where possible people are encouraged to attend Mass during the week instead of Sunday.
-Anyone who is unwell should not attend Mass in person but participate through other media.
-Holy Communion may only be received on the hand and reception of the chalice is suspended.
Please avail of hand sanitisers in our Church porches and sit only in the designated places.
THE SEASON OF CREATION or Creation Time, is marked throughout the Christian world from 1 September to 4 October (Feast of St. Francis of Assisi) and celebrates the joy of creation as well as encouraging awareness-raising initiatives to protect the natural environment.

24th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘Not seven times, but seventy-seven times’ Everyone has to confront the issue of forgiveness sometime. Forgiveness is a lovely idea until we have someone to forgive! In the end it’s a decision. We know the theory, but there comes a moment. In 1943 Eric Lomax, a British army officer, suffered severe mistreatment in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Thailand. Fifty years later he decided to return to the place of his torture to meet and be reconciled with his brutal torturer Nagase Takashi. When asked to explain his magnanimous gesture he replied, ‘sometime the hating must stop’. A contrasting reaction comes from a Jewish inmate who survived Auschwitz concentration camp. When reflecting on his ordeal with a former colleague many years later he proclaimed defiantly that he would never forgive the Commandant of the camp. ‘In that case’, replied his friend, ‘he still has you in prison’. Forgiveness liberates. Unforgiveness enslaves. ‘The greatest form of giving is forgiving’ (G.K.Chesterton).

HOW ARE WE DOING?  Well we opened June 29th and then promptly closed August 8-23rd! You will by now be familiar with the basic norms of social distancing, face coverings, cough etiquette, hand sanitising. And we thank you for the way you are observing these norms in church. I think our biggest problems are before and after Mass. I know that the public health authorities have contacted some bishops concerned about breaches of social distancing.
Clearly, enclosed spaces are very hospitable to the spread of the virus: hence the importance of VENTILATION. As temperatures drop and winter approaches, I find myself in a quandary! To Which do you give precedence- ventilation or heat? Just sharing it with you. ...now where did I put that spare sweater...!
The numbers attending the Sunday Mass in both Shannonbridge and Clonfanlough are generally OK and just under the maximum 50. You will notice that I’ve created 2 evening Masses (Monday Clonfanlough) Thursday (Shannonbridge) to assist those who may wish to avail of them. Our capacity in each Church is 50 divided between 15 pews/benches. The Sunday obligation remains lifted. The deep desire to attend Sunday Mass is much appreciated, and we don’t wish to turn people away or to go down the ‘ticket route’. Thank you for your sensitivity and understanding. I’ve been worried for our Stewards but so far so good. Feel free to book weekday masses- if you book Saturday/Sunday I may need to know roughly how many coming (50 is our capacity). I may need to “share” Mass intention but will check beforehand with yourselves. I really miss Choir Music, altar serving and so many aspects of a full community present.
RADIO I’m still streaming online on Facebook but internet is not everyone’s “thing”, so I’m experimenting with a 15 Watt Radio transmitter from Shannonbridge Gallery. You will find it at 106.5FM.  I’ve picked up my test broadcasts in Clonfad Church, beyond the blackwater and up to Creevagh. It’s far from perfect but it may help if you come to Church and find we are full.. At least you can listen in your car!

MUSIC AND SINGING AT MASS
With the current Covid 19 restrictions, regular large choirs are  discouraged, as is children serving at Mass and  with reduced numbers attending (maximum 50 capacity)  for Eucharistic Ministers to serve. I'm sure you share my frustration with this. For instance playing CD recorded music and streaming same online is breach of copyright. Maybe there is someone who could sing "live" or record some tracks we could use.. Just a thought and an invitation

CLONMACNOIS PATTERN DAY
As you know today (Sept 13th) should have been our annual Pattern Day. We recorded with Bishop Francis a 30 Minute Pattern Video on September 9th last which will go live on the diocesan website www.ardaghdiocese.org on Sunday at 3p.m.
I will also stream it online at the Parish Social Media Page on Facebook  and hopefully on YouTube under “Clonmacnois Parish” .

Prayer for Grandparents
[Written by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in 2008 for the Catholic Grandparents Association ]
Lord Jesus, You were born of the Virgin Mary, the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne. Look with love on grandparents the world over. Protect them! They are a source of enrichment for families, for the Church and for all of society. Support them! As they grow older, may they continue to be for their families strong pillars of Gospel faith, guardians of noble domestic ideals, living treasuries of sound religious traditions. Make them teachers of wisdom and courage, that they may pass on to future generations the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience.
Lord Jesus, help families and society to value the presence and roles of grandparents. May they never be ignored or excluded, but always encounter respect and love. Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed in all the years of life which you give them. Mary, Mother of all the living, keep grandparents constantly in your care, accompany them on their earthly pilgrimage, and by your prayers, grant that all families may one day be reunited in our heavenly homeland, where you await all humanity for the great embrace of life without end. Amen.

 23rd SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘If he listens to you, you have won back your brother’ At the dawn of creation, Cain protested that he was not his brother, Abel’s keeper. His words have been quoted throughout history to justify turning a blind eye, not getting involved even when a brother or sister is taking the wrong path. Jesus says that we are our brother’s, or sister’s keeper. Love corrects. If love doesn’t correct, then it is not love, but the correction must never be done harshly. It should never cause resentment. Naming and shaming never brings healing. When someone does something wrong, we would do well to remember the many things they did right. When Cardinal Angelo Roncalli the future Pope John XXIII was Patriarch of Venice, he once went to visit a wayward priest whose life was causing scandal. Having entered the priest’s house the Cardinal greeted him warmly and then knelt down and asked the priest if he would hear his confession. From that moment the priest began to turn his life around. Correction done with love bears fruit.

A PRAYER  O God, early in the morning I cry to you. Help me to pray and to concentrate my thoughts on you: I cannot do this alone. In me there is darkness, but with you there is light; I am lonely, but you do not leave me; I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help; I am restless, but with you there is peace. In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience; I do not understand your ways, but you know the way for me… Restore me to liberty and enable me to live now That I may answer before you and before me. Lord, whatever this day may bring, Your name be praised. Amen. (Dietrich Bonhoeffer)

There's something in it!

Life ends; when you stop dreaming

hope ends; when you stop believing

Love ends; when you stop caring

friendship ends; when you stop sharing.

let us try our best

not to let any of it end.

SEASON OF CREATION: 2020: “Never have we so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in the last two hundred years,” stated Pope Francis recently. So he has declared Tuesday next, September 1st as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. The Season of Creation or Creation Time, is marked throughout the Christian world from 1 September to 4 October (Feast of St. Francis of Assisi) and celebrates the joy of creation as well as encouraging awareness-raising initiatives to protect the natural environment.

STEWARDS/ SANITISING : We have been very blessed in our Parish with our Stewards and people sanitising. But we only have 2 stewards in Clonfanlough and 3 in Shannonbridge. Some of our parishes have not succeeded in having some  of their parish Masses return because of a lack of volunteers in this regards.

If you could help in this regard of stewarding or sanitising I’d love to hear from you.  So far numbers have not been critical. But if there is pressure on space– we may need to have a booking/ticket system

CHURCH COLLECTIONS – Many thanks to all in these most difficult times who so kindly continue to contribute to our collection every week.
