EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘Be on your guard against avarice of any kind’ This is the only parable in the New Testament in which words are attributed to God. He calls the young man ‘fool’ for his blind pursuit of wealth and possessions, without making any effort to make himself rich in the sight of God. In our world today we never had so much wealth and possessions, and yet there was never less contentment and security. We look around to see bigger houses, higher walls, security cameras, guard dogs and electric fences. Covetousness is the road to slavery! The person who does not know what is enough will never have enough. In Kenya the practice exists of removing the clothes from the dead before burying them to remind the living that we leave the world the same way we came into it. Come to think of it, we came into the world with fists clenched but we leave it with hands wide open!

‘He who is not contented with what he has would not be contented with what he would like to have’ (Socrates).

‘Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed’ (Mahatma Gandhi).

ü “The less people know about how laws and sausages are made, the better.” —Bismark. ü “Television is far more interesting than people. If it were not, we should have people standing in the corners of our sitting rooms.” -Alan Coren. ü “When I look back on all these worries, I remember the story of the old man who said on his deathbed that he had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which had never happened.” - Winston Churchill

POPE FRANCIS IN CANADA Pope Francis, 85, has long spotlighted older people and regularly denounces how they are treated like garbage in a “throwaway culture.” In Canada this week, as he relied on aides to get in and out of wheelchairs, Francis used his own visible frailty to again demand dignity and respect for other older people. In Alberta, Francis said that there needed to be “a future in which the elderly are not cast aside because, from a ‘practical’ standpoint, they are no longer useful.” Analysis: The world is aging rapidly. A U.N. report predicted that by 2050, people age 60 and over will exceed people under 15. “Never as many as now, never as much risk of being discarded,” Francis said.

POPE’S HEALTH & RUMOURS Francis denied rumours that he was planning to resign next month, a development some said was possible given his planned Aug. 28 visit to L’Aquila, the Italian city that is the burial place of St. Celestine V, who abdicated the papacy in the 13th century, which will be followed by a meeting of cardinals. When asked if the visit and the meeting indicated his imminent resignation, the pope responded: “For the moment no, really. But when the time comes that I see that I can’t do it [run the church, because of bad health] I will do it [resign].” The pope called rumours that cancer had been found during a surgery to remove part of his left colon “court gossip,” but said he would consider stepping down when he felt he could no longer perform the functions of his job.

SEVENTEENTH  SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

Say this when you pray’

The ‘Our Father’ is the model of all prayer. Two versions of this prayer are recorded in the gospels, a longer form containing seven petitions in the Gospel of Matthew and a shorter form containing five petitions in the Gospel of Luke. It is a prayer that has inspired poets and philosophers, popes and politicians, prisoners and paupers in every corner of the world over the past two thousand years. Every time we pray we use a version of the ‘Our Father’. It is a complete programme of Christian living. It is a summary of the entire Gospel. It covers all of life. It covers our past sin: ‘forgive us our trespasses’. It covers our present need: ‘give us this day our daily bread’. It covers our future trials: ‘lead us not into temptation’. Most amazing of all, it ‘allows’ us to address God as ‘Father’. This is an extraordinary privilege, which would have been incomprehensible to the Jews of Jesus’ day. It’s a privilege that carries with it a challenging responsibility. If we ‘dare’ to call God ‘Father’, we must be prepared to act as His sons and daughters should. The ‘Our Father’ is meant to be lived.

Prayer is the pillow of religion. When we are on our knees we can’t stumble. ‘I tell God what I want quite simply and He always seems to understand’ (St. Thérese of Lisieux).

PRAYER FOR GRANDPARENTS Lord Jesus, you were born of the Virgin Mary, the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne. Look with love on grandparents the world over. Protect them! They are a source of enrichment for families, for the Church and for all of society. Support them! As they grow older, may they continue to be for their families strong pillars of Gospel faith, guardians of noble domestic ideals, living treasuries of sound religious traditions. Make them teachers of wisdom and courage, that they may pass on to future generations the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience

Prayer for a Church Lord keep this Church the right kind of Church that it is Keep it from being the wrong kind, the Church of the cold shoulder or the Church of the sharp tongue or the Church of the closed mind. Let it always be the Church of the open mind, a Church of care for the broken heart, a Church of mercy, for the faltering step, a Church that mirrors God’s love for his people and the timeless compassion of Mary, God’s Mother, help of the half defeated. May this Church be a Church that understands, “We must love one another of die”. Fr. Ronan Drury RIP.
