From the Parish Pastoral Council
The Parish Pastoral Council & Fr O’Hanlon would like to thank all those who participated in the Ordination Golden Jubilee Celebrations on Fri 6th July in any way.  Without your presence, we could have no celebration.  A special word of thanks to those who looked after the catering, the music & singing, and to those who prepared the Church & Hall and surroundings for the event.
Your generosity, by way of cards, donations, prayers & good wishes is much appreciated.  Well done to the whole parish community for the pleasant atmosphere that pervaded the whole celebration.  This joyful spirit was also experienced by the ‘visitors’ attending.  Gaudeamus igitur!

10 Steps for Handling Life’s Hurts

(Christophers News Notes, # 409)

1. Recognise a problem exists.

2. Acknowledge the pain you feel—or caused.

3. Ask for help, guidance, another opinion.

4. Do one small, concrete thing to create change.

5. Make amends if appropriate.

6. Remember you always have choices.

7. Pray for strength, courage, healing.

8. Share what you’ve learned with others.

9. Don’t give up hope or extinguish it in others.

10. Forgive yourself. Forgive others.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom)

Q. What do you think of priests who disagree with the Pope? Should they be silenced?

A. As the Lord said, any house divided against itself cannot stand. If members of a football team publicly disagreed with the manager’s tactics they would soon be sidelined. Open debate is one thing but open dissent is another. There are enough critics outside the Church without critics from within tearing it apart.

Shannonbridge GAA Club

Junior C Football Championship.

Shannonbridge started their campaign with a 1-13 to 1-5 win over Walsh Island, at Shannonbridge. By the fifteenth minute, Shannonbridge had a two point lead with scores coming from Adrian Kelly and Kieran Kearns (0-2 each). In the seventeenth minute Mark Carty worked his way through for a fine goal. Half time score 1-6 to 0-2. A hardworking defence, well lead by Colm Kelly and Kieran Coughlan, contained a period of sustained pressure from Walsh Island at the start of the second half, with both sides scoreless for thirteen minutes. Excellent fielding by Jim Killeen, two points from Martin Deeley and Harry Kearns accuracy from frees, set the home side up to ease away in the final ten minutes. Adrian Kelly closed the scoring with a fine run from inside his own half and a shot from forty metres.

Team: C. Kelly, K. Coughlan, E. Casey, C. Kenny, R. Walsh, K. Norton, J. Killeen, M.Carty (1-0), M. Moloney, A. Kelly (Capt.) (0-4), M. Deeley (0-2), J. Guinan, K. Kearns (0-7).

Subs: A. Quinn, D. Fitzgerald, E. Keena, J. Turley.

Our Greatest Need

If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator;

If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist;

If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist;

But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Saviour.

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes

Intermediate Football Championship.

Shannonbridge just came up short on Sunday, at Clara, losing to Durrow by one point. In a low scoring first half, Shannonbridge lost Eddie Egan through injury, replaced by Darragh Corbett. A well worked goal, finished by John Ryan, left the sides level at the break 1-2 to 0-5.

In the ninth minute of the second half, a Durrow goal gave them a two point lead. Four minutes later they were awarded a penalty. A good save from Donal Corbett, resulted in a 45, which was deflected into the net. A goal by Anthony Kelly and a Shane Flannery point brought the gap back to the minimum. Durrow scored their third goal in the twenty first minute. Shannonbridge hit back with a point from a free and a goal by Paul Deeley from the penalty spot, but time ran out leaving Durrow winners by 3-7 to 3-6.

Team: Donal Corbett, S. Flannery (0-1), P. Moloney, M. Darcy, N. Price, P. Egan, W. Keena, J. Ryan (1-0), J. Egan, T. Mahon (0-1), K. Flannery (0-1), P. Kelly, P. Deeley (1-2), E. Egan, K. Kelly. Subs: Darragh Corbett for E. Egan, C. Killeen for T. Mahon, Anthony Kelly (1-1) for P. Kelly, R. Ryan for K. Flannery.

Duck Derby.

The club’s duck race, due to take place on the Shannon last Saturday, was deferred due to weather conditions and the high flood in the river. It will be run as soon as possible; many thanks to all who supported.

Questions people ask

Q. Why are bonfires lit in parts of the country on St John the Baptist’s Eve?

A. Bonfires on this night developed from the mid-summer festival when the sun reaches its highest glory but then begins to wane. That is how John the Baptist understood his mission in preparing the way for Christ. ‘He must grow greater, I must grow less’ (John 3:30). John the Baptist was the light destined to give way to the light of Christ. In a neat piece of counterpointing, the birth of Christ is celebrated just after mid-winters’ day when the sun begins to return. Christ is the light come into the world as a tiny baby destined to grow. I remember an old lady who used to bless our bonfire on this night with the plant known as St John’s Wort. Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom)

Q. What did Jesus mean when he said ‘you are pruned already’?

A. The vine, like many other fruit-bearing plants, receives two prunings. At the early pruning a certain number of shoots are selected for development while the remainder are lopped off. Close to harvest time, the second pruning cuts off the underdeveloped fruits to the benefit of the stronger ones. The disciples had survived the first pruning at the end of John Chapter 6 when they chose to remain with Jesus unlike those who walked away because they rejected his promise to give his flesh to eat and his blood to drink, the promise of the Eucharist

Memo from Parish Pastoral Council
‘We are fortunate to have 2 good Halls in our Parish, and we are happy that both are used regularly. We ask Organisations using them to leave them as they would like to find them – clean & tidy. Please ensure that all rubbish is removed, that lights, water& heat are turned off.
It is getting more expensive to maintain these Halls, because of increased costs for heat, lighting, water & Insurance. We need your cooperation.
We ask that rent for the particular Hall be paid to the person with whom the Hall is booked ASAP. The Hall in Clonfanlough is booked with Ann Guinan, and in Shannonbridge with Liz Duffy.’

50th I. Eucharistic Congress: ‘Communion with Christ & one another.’
All large celebrations require a great deal of materials & preparation. The Eucharistic Congress is no exception. There are many challenges involved, and we want to ensure that the whole Church, both in Ireland & further afield, will see the Congress as opportunities to deepen our Faith in the Eucharist.
The Fourth National Collection for the Congress will take place on the weekend of 5/6th May. (In your box of envelopes the appropriate one is marked as 10th June; please use this if you can. There is also an envelope in the information pack that is available today. You may use the ‘Holy Land envelope at some other time). Your support, especially in these difficult economic circumstances is very much appreciated, and we thank for your support to date.

Next Sun is ‘Vocation Sun’ – a day to pray for guidance in our calling
