15th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘He began to send them out’
From the outset the Church was missionary. The disciples were sent-out by Jesus to others. Christianity is not a private religion. The prayers of the Mass and the dismissal at the end of the celebration are reminders to us of the outward thrust that must be at the heart of who we are. We strengthen our own faith by sharing it with others. We share it best through our witness. Notice how Jesus concentrates on the lifestyle of the disciples rather than on the message. Witness always speaks louder than words. From the beginning the word of God has encountered apathy and downright opposition. St. Thomas Aquinas said that the four typical substitutes to God are pleasure, wealth, power and honour. These substitutes for God have become increasingly evident in our land and when God is lost people are ‘capable of anything’. The great Irishman, Frank Duff, founder of the Legion of Mary spoke prophetic words back in the 1920’s when he warned that inertia with regard to our faith leads, within two generations, to non-practice and within a further two generations to non- belief. The era of non-belief is with us. Our mission is close to home.
A DAILY PRAYER Lord, I thank you for the gift of being alive this morning . Lord, this day is full of promise and opportunity; Help me to waste none of it. This day is full of mystery and the unknown; Help me to face it without fear or anxiety. During this day, may I become More thoughtful, More generous, More appreciative, More prayerful. Help me to do nothing today That will hurt anyone But help me, at least a little, To make life more pleasant for those I meet. And when night comes, May I look back on this day without regrets. May nobody be unhappy because Of anything I have done Or anything I have failed to do. Lord bless this day for all of Us . Amen
THIS SUNDAY Christ sends His Apostles in pairs to preach the Word of God to all, and gave them instructions on how to carry out this mission. In our different vocations (marriage, priesthood) and states of life (religious life, single blessedness) God has a mission for us here on Earth and He shows us what it is.

FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE CHURCH Lord Jesus, in you we find joy, in you we find meaning for our lives. Bless the young people whom you choose and call to share in your life. So many of the prophets were young, so many of the saints found you in their youthful search. Your won earthly ministry bore fruit at a young age. Give to our young people the charism of hope and nurture the instinct of future promise. May they learn to see that the pressures on them will pass, but that their unique character will endure and grow. Fill our young people with the truth that they can each make a real difference in life: in their work, in their lasting friendships, in the fulfilment of marriage, priesthood, religious life or in serving you as individuals. Never allow them to be discourage by the weary voice of despondency, but let their lives transform others into people of hope who always see potential. Most of all, Lord Jesus, keep our young people close to your heart, and teach them always the love which accompanies them in this life and secures their future in heaven. Amen
 
Reek Pilgrimage on Croagh Patrick The annual Reek Sunday Pilgrimage on Croagh Patrick will be going ahead this year albeit in a much extended format from Wed to Sat, 1st - 31st July. The Masses (Wednesday – Saturday) will be limited to the numbers permitted for outdoor gatherings at that particular time, which currently apply to 200 people from 5th July. Details are available on www.westportparish.ie and on signage in the carpark at the start of the ascent. Pilgrims are asked to plan their trip to Croagh Patrick as early as possible and keep in mind that mid-week is traditionally a quieter time to climb.
SUNDAY WEDDINGS IN CHURCH: In our diocese of Ardagh and  Clonmacnois we would like to help accommodate those who had to postpone their wedding because of the Pandemic, we are now allowed to have Sunday Weddings up to 31^st December 2022. These marriages take place with the same guidelines as at present.
Annual Blessing of Graves Unfortunately, the current Covid-19 restrictions do not permit large gatherings of people. Therefore, I am planning to bless privately all graves in Clonmacnois Cemetery during the week beginning 1st August. In the meantime, I would encourage parishioners to begin tidying their family plots in the usual way.
Sick and Housebound I am grateful to a number of parishioners who asked me to visit family members or people within their area, who have been sick or housebound because of the pandemic. I am always happy to attend such people and administer the Sacraments in their own homes, mindful of the need to exercise the usual protocols.

WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS & THE ELDERLY: Pope Francis has established a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, which will take place for the first time on Sunday 25th July 2021 on the theme ‘I am with you always’ (Mt 28:20)
 
The Faith Café for Grandparents The Faith Café is an initiative of the Catholic Grandparents’ Association which was introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic as a social and spiritual space for Grandparents to meet online once a month to chat, to offer prayers and intentions and to just be together in the spirit of faith. It has been a lifeline for so many people during this time of pandemic and has connected Grandparents across the world from Ireland to the USA, from the UK to Australia. The next Faith Café will be on Tuesday 13th July from 7.30pm to 8.30pm and the speaker is Archbishop Michael Neary. Register for the Faith Café by email to info@catholicgrandparentsassociation.com. 14th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘A prophet is despised only in his own country’ Jesus is rejected in his own town. A carpenter is a carpenter surely! We know all about his family! How could one of our own possibly have such wisdom? It’s a familiar story. We tend to look to far away hills for inspiration while the treasure is under our feet. God is present in the everyday. His face shines through ordinary people. His voice is heard in unlikely places. ‘There is a divine message in everything’. We would do well to take a second look at those closest to us. There is more to them than meets the eye. How did Jesus react to being rejected by His own people? He didn’t castigate His listeners. He didn’t rant or rail. He didn’t force His message on anyone. He simply withdrew quietly and took His message to another region. The preacher depends on the disposition of the congregation. There can be no preaching to hearts that are closed. If people decide that they won’t understand, they won’t understand. We can either help or hinder the work of Jesus Christ. We can open the door wide to Him or we can shut it in His face. It is interesting to note the sequel to this unpleasant episode. After His rejection Jesus never returned to Nazareth again!

July 9th Augustine Zhao Rong & Companions Known as the Chinese martyrs, these martyrs were canonized in the year 2000.The group of 120 died in China between 1648 & 1930

Further advice will follow on the resumption of these ceremonies when it is safe to do so.”

LOUGH DERG  2021 Registration is now open to “Do Lough Derg from wherever you are” from 3rd to 5th July. The Prior, Fr La Flynn, will do the Three Day Pilgrimage on the Island during these days. To offer a live link by webcam in support of those who will choose to do the pilgrimage wherever they are, some of the Lough Derg staff will do the pilgrimage in St. Mary’s Church in Pettigo. Irish Church Music Association Summer School goes virtual For the first time ever, this year’s Irish Church Music Association (ICMA) Summer School will be hosted online from Wednesday 7th to Saturday 10th July. This year’s theme is ‘Songs of Love, Faith, Trust and Praise.’ Each session of the Summer School will begin at 8 p.m. each day on Facebook Love and You Tube. For those unable to tune in live, a recorded version of each session will be available on the ICMA website. ANNIVERSARY MASS BOOKING For the time being we feel it would be best if family anniversaries were booked for weekdays. I’m quite flexible on times that would suit. This is to enable as  many parishioners as possible to access Mass at the weekend. We have 15 seats and a maximum capacity of 50. So if 15 individuals came in– we are full. If 15 couples came in– we are full at 30 and so on up to 50. It’s quite tricky and we are so blessed with the volunteers parishioners at our doors meeting you. . Having an Anniversary at the weekend means embarrassing conversations as to how many and who plan to be there– also potentially dislodging Sunday regulars.  Thanks for your patience in this.

Trocaire Face-to-face Fundraising Campaign It’s been a most difficult year for all charities and in the case of Trocaire with reduced and at times shut churches– all the harder. Trocaire volunteers / staff will be working in small roaming teams across the country. You may see fundraisers either in or outside shops or calling door-to-door inviting members of the public to become monthly donors to Trocaire. This activity has been sanctioned by Trocaire.

Irish Hospice Foundation Bereavement Support Line, in partnership with the HSE, is there to provide connection, comfort and support for anyone grieving in these exceptional times.
