Intermediate Football Championship.
Shannonbridge qualified for the knockout stages of the championship when defeating Clara, at Ferbane, on Wednesday night last. Shannonbridge got off to the best possible start with a goal from Declan Kelly in the first minute and led by 1-4 to 0-1 after 17 minutes. A Clara revival in the second quarter saw them score four points in five minutes – 1-5 to 0-4. Shannonbridge closed the scoring to lead at half-time by 1-9 to 0-4. The second half start was a carbon copy of the first, with a Kieran Flannery goal in the first minute. Clara were then awarded a penalty, but when Liam Griffin saved, their chance of getting back into the game was gone. Shannonbridge ran out comfortable winners on a score line of 2-15 to 0-9. Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes
Celebrity Bainnisteoir.
No luck for Shannonbridge in the eagerly awaited Celebrity Bainnisteor match against Castleisland Desmonds at Shannonbridge on Saturday last, losing by four points after a very spirited second half fight-back. Shannonbridge started well, but were let down by wayward shooting, registering five wides in the first fifteen minutes. Kieran Flannery was unlucky to see his shot for a goal rebound off the post on eight minutes. Castleisland opened the scoring with a pointed free and followed this up with another free, in the twelfth minute, that travelled all the way to the net. Shannonbridge replied almost immediately, when Kieran Kearns hammered the ball home from close range for a good goal. Castleisland then took over and scored four more points, before being awarded a rather dubious penalty which was dispatched to the net. Shannnonbridge completed the first half scoring with points from Anthony Kelly and Niall Price. Half time score 2-6 to 1-2.
The home side upped their game in the second half and a goal by Roger Ryan, who fisted a Paul Deeley free to the net, left just four points in it, 2-4 to 2-8. Two further frees from Deeley, closed the gap to just three points with five minutes to go, but as time ran out Castleisland attacked to leave the final score 2-10 to 2-6.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report dated 30th August 2010
River levels are at low summer levels and the weather has been generally good.
Many farmers have got their first hay crop from the Callow land beside the rivers
for the first time in three years.
>Aidan Kelly went fishing on 10/8 on Shannon using red maggot in good weather
catching 40 to 50 rudd and roach.Good fishing except for the pike attacks.
Gave up after two hours due to pike attacks.
Later that evening Aidan fished the same swim using dead bait and caught
five pike between 4lbs and 15lbs.All returned alive.
>Jamie Hines,Dorchester aged 14, grandson of the late Peter, fished the Suck on 10/8
using maggot in sunshine to catch 76 coarse fish -roach to a pound,rudd,hybrids,perch
and 7 bream to a pound. Peter was a fisherman.
>Pat Kelly,Birmingham fished the Claremadden river on 12/8 using worms to catch
a brown trout 23 inches long that Pat says 'fought like Hell'.
>Pearde McKiernan,Rathcoole fished the Suck on 14/8 using a boat and trolling
to catch 6 good perch and a 10lbs pike which were returned alive.
>Nicholas Bing?,Ballinakill fished the Shannon on 14/8 to catch 29lbs coarse fish,
with 6 bream to a pound,perch to a pound and roach to 1/2lb.'Great Day'

15lbs of roach,hybrids,rudd,skimmer and a 2lb perch.Great day out.

Best measured 70cm and they were very nice.

Late Dave McDonagh
Sad to record the death of Dave McDonagh, Clonfert, which occurred on Sunday last. Dave was well known here in Shannonbridge as a popular member of the staff of the ESB Power Station. His funeral took place in Clonfert yesterday. May he rest in peace.

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes
Celebrity Bainnisteoir.
Celebrity Bainnisteoir Football Game, Shannonbridge v Castleisland, will take place on Saturday next 28th August, in Shannonbridge, at 1.00pm. This game will be filmed for television. All support will be very much appreciated and admission is free.
Our Bainnisteoir Nuala Carey was putting the final touches to the preparations for the big game yesterday, assisted by guest motivational speaker, none other than former Irish Rugby coach Eddie O’Sullivan.
Commentary on Sunday will be by the legendary Michael O’Muircheartaigh, who, incidentally, celebrated his 80th birthday last week.

The society held a very successful outing to Ballinasloe last Saturday, with thirty members, including some welcome new additions, turning out. Top prize went to Society Captain, Jim Killeen, with 45 points, from Seamus Grennan(39 points) and Mick Kitt (37points). Category prizes went to: Cat. 1 Danny Farrelly (34), Cat. 2 Mary Kelly (34) and Cat. 3 Fergal McEvoy (37). Next outing is to Edenderry on September 25th.

GAA Club Sponsored Head Shave
A sponsored head shave will take place in Killeen's Pub on Sunday next at 4pm. A number of players from the club are taking part. This is part of the Celebrity Bainnisteoir programme and a large crowd is needed - please support. All proceeds from this event go to the charity AWARE.

No winner last week. The numbers drawn were 9, 16, 27, 28. There was one match three winner. This week’s jackpot is €13,000.
Intermediate Football Championship.
Shannonbridge fought their way back into the championship with a win over Clonbullogue, in a close game, at Ballinamere on Saturday. The loss, through injury, of Niall Price, before the start and of John Egan, halfway through the first half, did not help Shannonbridge’s cause, but despite a number of missed chances they held an interval lead of 0-5 to 0-4. Clonbullogue started the second half with a series of attacking moves that yielded four wides in as many minutes, before taking a two point lead with a deflected goal in the eleventh minute. They held this lead for most of the half, until a goal from Declan Kelly put Shannonbridge back in front by two points at 1-7 to 1-5. With Clonbullogue pressing hard, Shannonbridge broke away and a foul on Declan Kelly was punished by a point from Paul Deeley, who followed this up with further points in injury time, from play and a free, to leave the final score 1.10 to 1-5. A guided tour of the Shannonbridge Fortifications will take place next Saturday 21st August at 2pm from quay car park. Due to the rough terrain, not suitable for children. No dogs allowed please.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report dated 10th August '10
Weather has been generally fine of late with the occassional drop of rain.Overcast
and late evening fishing is favoured.Prebaiting and preparing and fishing the same
swim is recommended.\\\\\\\\\\\\river levels remain at low summer levels and this has resulted in lots of light weed appearing in the rivers and canals.
A visitor from the Barrow told me his friend had caught a salmon on the barrow on
two successive days which he returned alive as stocks are being built up.
Local Gillie Aidan Kelly has recorded some of his recent catches.
>On 27th July Aidan caught 10 roach and one skimmer in two hours using red maggot.
>On 3rd August Aidan had 120 fish 7 bream to 2lbs,10 hybrids to 2lbs,30/40 rudd
and even more roach to 1lb and a 2lb pike on red maggot.Overcast dull day was good.
>On 9th August Aidan again fished for two hours on Shannon catching 3 bream to over 2lb
and twelve roach using red maggot.
>.Nick Price from Gort fished Shannon on 23/7 using worm/sweetcorn to catch 40lbs bream
and tench.All the fish fancied worm.

A great second half rally by Shannonbridge just fell short in a hard fought game against Raheen, at Ballycommon, on Sunday, going under by just two points 0on a score of 0-12 to 2.8. Raheen started brightly with two points in the first couple of minutes, but Shannonbridge stayed in touch with points from Ciaran Kearns, Anthony Kelly and Paul Deeley. A goal two minutes before half time gave Raheen a six point interval lead 0-4 to 1-7. The gap was down to three points early in the second half, when Shannonbridge lost John Ryan through injury, soon followed by Declan Kelly, and conceded a second goal in the eighteenth minute. Shannonbridge set about reducing the gap and accurate free taking by Anthony Kelly and Paul Deeley brought the margin down to two points as time ran out. Shannonbridge Fishing Report dated 27th July 2010
The river level is 2.4 metres.Anglers and landowners
have noted that the bridge access to the backriver
has had new timbers fitted.A safety handrail has
yet to be added.
>Susan Radcliffe Exeter fished near the village
bridge using maggot to catch 10 tench Best 2lbs.
>Niel Grehan Ballinasloe fished Grand Canal using
maggot to catch two tench of 3lb and 4lb and some
good roach as well.
>Local gillie Aidan Kelly caught 9 bream between
1lb and 2lbs and some roach at Shannonbridge all
in one hour.
>Next day 23rd July Aidan fished with red maggot
in sunshine catching 15 skimmer bream and 30 roach.
>Next day Aidan fished with corn bread and caster
catching 56 roach rudd and skimmers.Good fishing.
>Later that day Aidan fished with bread/maggot and
caught a hybrid of 2.75 lbs and lots of other fish.
>Use Willy Belgium fished the Shannon using dead
bait to catch 7 pike from 50cm to 75cm.Returned
alive.
>Use Willy fished the Shannon using feeder to catch
37 roach in four hours.
>Van Bevere Belgium fished the Shannon with feeder
and maggot to catch 48 roach in five hours.
>Aedon King fished the Hot Water using feeder to
catch a 3lb tench 15 rudd and two pike.
>Neil Curran fished with Aedon using caster and
sweetcorn catching a 2lb tench 2 pike and 10 good
rudd.Noted foreign anglers taking fish at Hot Water

Shannonbridge Win Home Advantage in Celebrity Bainisteoir.
Shannonbridge’s game in the Celebrity Bainisteoir competition will take place in Shannonbridge on Saturday 28th August. Home advantage was achieved by our team of four players, John Ryan, Dermot Turley, Adrian Kelly and Adrian Coughlan, who managed to overcome the challenge of Castleisland Desmonds in an assault course challenge at the Curragh on Tuesday. Well done lads, brilliant result for the club.

Hardwired for God (Fr Tom Cahill SVD)
I don’t know if our genes are, but according to scientists our brains are: hardwired for God. They’re programmed to discover supernatural reasons for life’s mysteries. Our brain organises the information, our senses send it to discover cause and effect. Since babies, only 12-months old can do this, it seems to be innate rather than acquired. So, the findings of researchers at Bristol University studying the development and workings of children’s brains are not surprising. They indicate that belief systems offer a possible evolutionary benefit to people.
An itch to ask the question ‘why’ is not the only thing that’s innate to us. There’s the universal hope, expectation even, that good will conquer evil. Just read your novels, watch your films. Don’t you feel more satisfied when the good guy wins?

An itch to ask the question ‘why’ is not the only thing that’s innate to us. There’s the universal hope, expectation even, that good will conquer evil. Just read your novels, watch your films. Don’t you feel more satisfied when the good guy wins?

Last month (March 1979) John Lowe wrote those wordsin a letter
to The Shannonbridge Star.Now that lovable old man of song and story
has gone the whole hog and turned into a prophet and saint.
John Lowe is dead and we regret his passingaway so quickly, just when
so many of us were getting to know him.
A week before his death, John Lowe came to Shannonbridge to deliver
two of his own songs and he made a generous donation towards the paper.
We feel sure you would like to read his songs and we print one of them
for you this month.A Special Mass will be offered for his soul in
Shannonbridge Church at the request of The Shannonbridge Star.
May he rest in peace.

Recently Tony Lowe from Dublin was in Shannonbridge and he told
that he was a Grand-son of the late John Lowe from Clonfinlough.
I happened to mention that John Lowe had written a poem that
was published in the April 1979 Shannonbridge Star.
Tony said that John had written a copy-book full of poems.
Unfortunately that book was never found after John died.
Lucky enough a copy of the 1979 Shannonbridge Star was found.
Here is the poem again for new readers.

This world is sometimes funny and sometimes very sad
We have different kinds of people,
Some good and others bad.
When a man gets vicious his neighbour does despise.
Tries to take his character with profane words and lies.
It sometimes causes murder and he ends up in Hell,
And often the man thats killed ends up there as well.
What kind of conscience has a man when his good neighbour kills

Shannonbridge Fishing Report dated 20th July 2010
River level had been around the two metre mark recently.
Some heavy rain showers have brought level up to 2.3metres.
>Barry Crawford fished a backwater using three sweetcorn
on a hair rigged 14 hook catching six bream in a two hour
session best 2.5lbs.Too hot for Barry.
>Tom O Brien Athlone used a volvex spinner on Shannon to catch
4 pike and 6 perch.Best pike weighed 12lbs.
>John and Breg Hersee Ayhlone fished Shannonbridge with
bamboo sticks and maggot catching 20 roach 5 perch 1 bream
and i pike.Their advise is Dont buy a rod -make your own.
Stephen Hersee fished with maggot and feeder to catch one
2 lb roach.
>Three generations of Cartys Tom Paddy and Thomas from
Dublin/Shannonbridge fished the Hot Water using worm and float
and a spinner to catch 21 perch and 1 pike Sunshine.
>Joel Stutz Switzerland fished the Shannon using worms
to catch one 60cm pike in the rain.
>Lorraine Devery went fishing for the first time and used
float and maggot to catch 2 bream of 2lbs each.Just reel in.
>Aidan Kelly fished the Shannon using a spinner to catch
7 pike between 2lbs and 6lbs.OK says Aidan.
>Aidan Kelly tried evening fishing with maggot and in two hours
he caught 30 roach and rudd best up to a pound weight.
>Brothers Ev and Theo Everdingen from Holland have just ended
their fishing holiday.Using worms they fished behind an island
on the Shannon to catch 48 perch, 70 perch and roach,
30 perch and 1 pike of 70cm,50 rudd and perch and 90 perch
>Alan Boreham Loughrea fished the canal near Ballymahon using
red maggot and bread to catch 8 tench from 4lbs to 5lbs each.
Lot of soft weed had to be raked out in the swim,

The Youth 2000 Festival takes place in Clonmacnois from 12 - 15 August. Already work has begun in preparing for the influx of visitors for the event. The organisers wish to extend a warm welcome to all the locals especially those in 16 - 35 age group.

Children's Playground
The children's playground in Shannonbridge, on the green opposite the church, is now almost completed and looks splendid. A huge lot of voluntary work has gone into this project. More details on the opening shortly.

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes
Celebrity Bainisteoir.
A large crowd gathered at the field last Saturday for the announcement of our Celebrity Bainisteoir. Everybody was surprised and delighted that the bainisteoir is none other than RTE’S Nuala Carey, who got a big round of applause on her arrival. As she put the full panel through a gruelling session in front of the cameras, in the pouring rain, so much for weather forecasting, it was obvious that this project will be a success and great craic. A full attendance is expected for all training sessions. Filming took take place both at the field and in Clonmacnoise and in the village during the day.

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes
Shannonbridge win Division Five League Final.
Congratulations to our team who overcame neighbours Doon to take the Div. 5 League title. The game was played at Cloghan, in dry but very windy conditions, which made shooting, particularly at the road end, a bit of a lottery. Shannonbridge with the aid of the elements established a four points to nil lead at half time with scores from Shane Flannery, Adrian Kelly and John Guinan (two). It did not look to be enough, but a goal ten minutes after the restart by John Guinan helped to settle the Shannonbridge nerves. However a goal for Doon, after the ball rebounded off the goalpost, led to a hectic last ten minutes, with Doon searching for the winner as Shannonbridge defended heroically and held out to take the game on a score line of 1-6 to 1-4. All six backs defended resolutely, Mark Carty and Colm Kenny did well at midfield and up front, on a difficult day for scoring, Eamon Kelly who drove the team forward throughout the second half and top scorer John Guinan, who finished with 1-3, were the pick of a hard working forward line. After the game, team captain, Colm Kenny, was presented with the trophy by Padraig Boland, Vice Chairman of Offaly Co. Board. Team: Martin Deeley, Joe Duffy, Ciaran Norton, Paul Moloney, Rory Walshe, Trevor Mahon, Aidan Kelly, Mark Carty, Colm Kenny, Peadar Kelly (0-1), Adrian Kelly (0-1), Eddie Egan, John Guinan (1-3), Eamon Kelly, Shane Flannery (0-1). All six backs defended resolutely, Mark Carty and Colm Kenny did well at midfield and up front, on a difficult day for scoring, Eamon Kelly who drove the team forward throughout the second half and top scorer John Guinan, who finished with 1-3, were the pick of a hard working forward line. There was no winner of last week’s jackpot, with the numbers drawn as follows – 5, 6, 8 and 21. There were nine match three winners. This week’s jackpot is € 12,000.

I want to thank you all for your varied expressions of sympathy and support on the sudden death of my brother Fr Joe.
It is much appreciated. In the words of a great poet, Virgil
“sunt lacrimae rerum, et mentem mortalia tangunt”.

The Apocalypse is not a book foretelling future historical people, although people of every age have fancifully applied it that way. It was written for Christians of the First Century AD who were being persecuted by the Roman Emperor to assure them of God’s ultimate triumph over evil.
