Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes

Celebrity Bainnisteoir.
No luck for Shannonbridge in the eagerly awaited Celebrity Bainnisteor match against Castleisland Desmonds at Shannonbridge on Saturday last, losing by four points after a very spirited second half fight-back. Shannonbridge started well, but were let down by wayward shooting, registering five wides in the first fifteen minutes. Kieran Flannery was unlucky to see his shot for a goal rebound off the post on eight minutes. Castleisland opened the scoring with a pointed free and followed this up with another free, in the twelfth minute, that travelled all the way to the net. Shannonbridge replied almost immediately, when Kieran Kearns hammered the ball home from close range for a good goal. Castleisland then took over and scored four more points, before being awarded a rather dubious penalty which was dispatched to the net. Shannnonbridge completed the first half scoring with points from Anthony Kelly and Niall Price. Half time score 2-6 to 1-2.
The home side upped their game in the second half and a goal by Roger Ryan, who fisted a Paul Deeley free to the net, left just four points in it, 2-4 to 2-8. Two further frees from Deeley, closed the gap to just three points with five minutes to go, but as time ran out Castleisland attacked to leave the final score 2-10 to 2-6.
Team: L. Griffin, W. Keena, M. Darcy, P. Moloney, S. Flannery, N. Price (0-1), D. Turley, E. Kelly, C. Killeen, P. Kelly, A. Kelly (0-2), C. Flannery, P. Deeley (0-3), K. Kearns (1-0), D. Kelly. Subs: R. O’Connor for P. Moloney, R. Ryan (1-0) for E. Kelly, D. Corbett for P. Kelly, T. Mahon for K. Flannery.
The whole Celebrity Bainnisteoir programme has been a great experience for the club and community. Thank you to our Bainisteoir, Nuala Carey, for her hard work and enthusiasm in the role; she has won many friends with her warm and friendly approach. A big thank you to all our sponsors, committee members, stewards, Civil Defence, all the ladies who helped with the catering, Gardai, local landowners, supporters and all who contributed to a very successful day on Saturday for our Celebrity Bainisteoir game. Best of luck to Castleisland Desmonds for the remainder of the series. Watch out for the series on RTE later in the year. Commentary on the game was by Micheál O’Muircheartaigh.

Questions people askQ. I am sometimes addicted to pornography on the internet. Afterwards I feel really ashamed. But I fall again and again. Any advice?A. Yes, it is a form of addiction. As with any addiction it takes away freedom. The first step in rehabilitation is the humble admission of having lost your freedom in dealing with the problem. Then you must sincerely ask for God’s help, not just once, but every time you open your internet. For somebody addicted to alcohol, what is important is not to take the first drink. For you, the important step is not to switch on the site where you lose your freedom and dignity.

Intermediate Football Championship.
Shannonbridge fought their way back into the championship with a win over Clonbullogue, in a close game, at Ballinamere on Saturday. The loss, through injury, of Niall Price, before the start and of John Egan, halfway through the first half, did not help Shannonbridge’s cause, but despite a number of missed chances they held an interval lead of 0-5 to 0-4. Clonbullogue started the second half with a series of attacking moves that yielded four wides in as many minutes, before taking a two point lead with a deflected goal in the eleventh minute. They held this lead for most of the half, until a goal from Declan Kelly put Shannonbridge back in front by two points at 1-7 to 1-5. With Clonbullogue pressing hard, Shannonbridge broke away and a foul on Declan Kelly was punished by a point from Paul Deeley, who followed this up with further points in injury time, from play and a free, to leave the final score 1.10 to 1-5. Team: Liam Griffin, Willie Keena, Mel Darcy, Colm Kenny, Shane Flannery (0-1), Eamon Kelly, Dermot Turley, John Egan, Conor Killeen, Peadar Kelly, Anthony Kelly (0-1f), Ciaran Flannery (0-1), Paul Deeley (0-5, 2f), Ciaran Kearns (0-1), Declan Kelly (1-1). Subs: Trevor Mahon for John Egan, Roger Ryan for Peadar Kelly, Rory O’Connor for Paul Deeley and Deeley for Declan Kelly.

Best Wishes.
Best wishes and a speedy recovery, from all in the club, to John Ryan, who sustained a serious shoulder injury in last week’s intermediate game.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom)Q. Since the Assumption of Mary is not mentioned in the Bible, why does the Church celebrate the Feast of the Assumption?A. Surely you are not suggesting that the Mother of Jesus is not in heaven! The privileges bestowed on Mary are an advanced indication of what God has in store for all who belong to the family of her Son. It is expressed beautifully in the Preface of the Feast: ‘The virgin Mother of God was taken up to heaven to be the beginning and pattern of the Church in its perfection, and a sign of hope and comfort for your people on their pilgrim way.’ It is also a celebration of the sacred dignity of the human body.

A great second half rally by Shannonbridge just fell short in a hard fought game against Raheen, at Ballycommon, on Sunday, going under by just two points 0on a score of 0-12 to 2.8. Raheen started brightly with two points in the first couple of minutes, but Shannonbridge stayed in touch with points from Ciaran Kearns, Anthony Kelly and Paul Deeley. A goal two minutes before half time gave Raheen a six point interval lead 0-4 to 1-7. The gap was down to three points early in the second half, when Shannonbridge lost John Ryan through injury, soon followed by Declan Kelly, and conceded a second goal in the eighteenth minute. Shannonbridge set about reducing the gap and accurate free taking by Anthony Kelly and Paul Deeley brought the margin down to two points as time ran out. Team: Liam Griffin, Willie Keena, Mel Darcy, Niall Price, Shane Flannery, Eamon Kelly, Dermot Turley, Ciaran Kearns (0-1), John Egan, Paul Moloney, Anthony Kelly (0-6, 4 frees), Ciaran Flannery, Paul Deeley (0-5, 4 frees) John Ryan, Peadar Kelly. Questions people askQ. What is meant by the Prosperity Gospel?A. This is a misleading concept of God’s blessing promulgated especially by American television evangelists. They claim that handing your life over to Jesus guarantees the earthly blessings of prosperity, success and health. But what of people who do not experience such so-called blessings? We are told that they are being punished for their sins, perhaps for the sins of ancestors in the family tree. This Prosperity Gospel or Cadillac Christianity is a contradiction of the teaching of Jesus who declared the blessedness of the poor, powerless and persecuted.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom)Q. Where are the original manuscripts of the Gospels and letters of St Paul?A. There are no surviving original manuscripts of any part of the Bible, just as there are no original fragments of any of the famous Greek or Roman writers of that period such as Virgil or Cicero. We depend on copies of all these writings and copies of copies. Copyists were far from perfect and there are thousands of variations among the documents. The oldest surviving fragments of New Testament texts date from about 150 AD. The oldest complete New Testament dates from the fourth century. Some of the oldest fragments, dating from 250 AD are lodged in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin.
