34th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING

‘Mine is not a kingdom of this world’

Pope Pius XI, whose motto was ‘the peace of Christ in the reign of Christ’ instituted this Feast in 1925. Benito Mussolini had just declared himself ‘Il Duce’ (‘The Leader’) of Italy; Stalin had come to power in Russia; Hitler was gaining control in Germany and the Holy Father wanted to remind his flock that, for them, there could be only one ‘duce’, Jesus Christ. He placed the feast, appropriately, at the hinge of the Church Year, to indicate that all time and all seasons belong to the Lord. Christ is a king with a difference. He did not come to reign on a golden throne, but on a wooden cross. His power comes, not through domination, but through humble service. As he stands before Pilate in today’s Gospel, he explains his mission: ‘I have come to bear witness to the truth’. God is Truth and when we stray from Him, we stray from the truth. When on the other hand we seek His truth, love His truth, speak His truth, act His truth, and lead others to discover His truth we enable His kingdom to come within our hearts and within our world.

‘The Feast of Christ the King is the feast of those who know they are in the hands of the One who writes straight with crooked lines’. (Pope Benedict).

World Mission Sunday - 24 October This year we will celebrate World Mission Sunday over the weekend of 24 October. Its theme ‘We Cannot Remain Silent - We cannot but speak about what we have seen and heard (Acts 4 20)' is twofold. It is message of hope - Jesus Christ is risen and we cannot keep his love compassion and mercy to ourselves. It also challenges us to stand-up and speak on behalf of those whose voices are too small to be heard We all have the potential to be champions for those who are weaker For them we cannot remain silent All offerings and donations made for World Mission Sunday become part of the Holy Father's Universal Solidarity Fund. This Fund is essential not only for missionaries but for the future of the Church. It supports missionary activities in over 1,100 mission dioceses, mostly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. However, World Mission Sunday is far more than an appeal for financial help. Missionaries also need your spiritual support. On this universal celebration missionaries can take great strength in knowing that the faithful of the world are keeping them in their thoughts and prayers.

Tom Cox (Adm) Tel. 090 9674125/ 0868319500 Email: clonmacnoiseparish@gmail.com WEB shannonbridge.blogspot.ie FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/tomas.macconchoille (Live) https://fb.me/saintciarans (saved to it afterwards) 33rd SUNDAY OF THE YEAR ‘Heaven and earth will pass away’ There is something about the month of November that invites us to reflect on endings and beginnings. As winter tightens its grip and the landscape becomes increasingly barren we are confronted with the stark truth that this world as we know it will pass away. The Word of God these Sundays asks us to live with this awareness. We are reminded that all life is a preparation to meet the King. One day we will stand before Him to account for our stewardship, for the choices we have made. ‘If in the end we have not chosen God, then it will not matter what else we have chosen’ (C.S. Lewis). Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter suggested that ‘we should live our lives each day as though Christ were coming in the afternoon’. His advice is wise. All spectacular achievement is preceded by unspectacular preparation, and by preparing for death we actually clarify life. Doesn’t it make sense to be prepared? A Coronavirus Prayer for this Weary Winter Jesus Christ, Light of the World, You understand what it is like to feel alone in the midst of great suffering. Remain with us as we continue to endure the coronavirus pandemic. Awaken our hearts as we bear witness to the sickness, the sacrifice, even death. In these dark months we cry, “How long, O Lord?” Help us to watch and pray for signs of your hope. When we long for a world returned to normal, inspire us to work toward a world transformed. When we feel forgotten and lonely, help us to find solidarity through your love. When we cannot see your face, help us to see you in others, especially the medical professionals who labour tirelessly. When we feel only sorrow in our souls, help us to know that the joy of the Gospel remains as true now as ever. When we feel only grief in our hearts, help us to find consolation in knowing that those who are sick or have died are held in your loving embrace. As we walk through this time of darkness, give us faith that we are headed toward brighter days. Give light to our eyes. Let us show that light to one another. Even in winter, when the ground appears barren, it is warmed by the light of your creation; seeds are nourished and green shoots are pushing up toward the sun. Jesus Christ, be our light. Amen. To pastorally support everyone who has suffered the pain of bereavement during the pandemic, and in the context of the month of November as the traditional time when we remember our dead, on Sunday, 14 November at 3.00pm, the Bishops of Ireland will undertake a pilgrimage to the International Eucharistic and Marian Shrine in Knock. The bishops will concelebrate Mass for those who died in our country during the pandemic, and their families. The bishops will also offer prayers of thanksgiving for those who so selflessly sacrificed so much during the pandemic. This Mass will be live-streamed on www.knockshrine.ie and broadcast on the RTÉ News Now digital television channel and online.  32nd SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

The Widows’ Mite

It is said that there are three types of giver: the grudge giver who says ‘I hate to give’; the duty giver who says ‘I have to give’; the thanks giver who says ‘I want to give’. The widow in today’s Gospel, who gave away all that she had, fits comfortably into the third category. Jesus noticed her quiet gesture and presented her to the ages as a pattern of generosity. Her unsung deed teaches us that the amount of the gift never matters so much as its cost to the giver. Real generosity gives until it hurts. Wealth is not determined by what you have accumulated, but by what you will give when a good deed needs to be done. It is the truly generous who are truly wise and it is the hand that gives that gathers. The little widow was wealthy beyond words.

Autumnal Wood Wisdom. Bro. Richard Hendrick Ofm Cap

Enter slowly, and with reverence, the golden autumnal woods,
and then, stopping beneath its vaulted sylvan sanctuary,
allow its burnished beauty of bronzed leaf,
polished nut, and, shining fruit to reflect deep
eternal richness of Divine generosity,
always gifting grace in each moment,
of Heaven’s harvesting, to breathe its blessing through you.

Then, accepting its annual invitation to stillness,
you will hear the slowing heartbeat of the earth
as she moves towards her                                                                                          yearned for yearly time of maternal meditation,
and feel her ever deepening breaths appear as mother-mists,
exhaled between branches slowly releasing leaf’s attachment
into wind’s wildness, beckoning you into the stillness that bears always the slow fruiting berry of prayer,
whose sweet taste is wisdom.

A Prayer of Remembrance

God, thank you for the special people in our lives whom we are remembering in a special way during the month of November. We thank you for being a compassionate God who walks with us in the our dark moments of grief and loneliness. We are thankful for all who continue to love and support us through our grief. Lord, continue to be a light for us, giving us hope, direction and courage. May we now live our lives treasuring the memories of those special people we have known and loved and help us to bring light and hope to others. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord, Amen.

COP 26 Meeting in Glasgow. Pope Francis has appealed to decision makers who gather in Glasgow to “provide effective responses” to the ecological crisis and to “offer concrete hope” to future generations.

Pope Francis writes: It is worth repeating that each of us—whoever and wherever we may be—can play our own part in changing our collective response to the unprecedented threat of climate change and the degradation of our common home. I was impressed by something said by one of the scientists . He told us: If things continue as they are, in 50 years time my baby granddaughter will have to live in an unliveable world. “We cannot allow this to happen!”. It is essential that each of us be committed to this urgent change of direction, sustained by our own faith and spirituality.
