Words – Powerful Tools                                               (William Arthur Ward)
"Words, our primary source of communication, are more than letters pierced together to form a concept. They are powerful tools to be used with the awareness that words make a difference.
Words spoken with love offer a constructive and fulfilling meal of praise, encouragement, gratitude, apology, or forgiveness to a hungry listener. They can bring positive change into another person’s life.

New Local History Book Published

The book  The Marble of Clonmacnoise, Limestone Quarrying at Clerhane, (Clorhane), Shannonbridge, Co. Offaly  by Declan Ryan, published by Offaly County Council  was launched last Friday evening.  For those that could not make the launch it is  now available in Shannonbridge, the OHAS on Bury Quay, Midland Books on High Street, Robbyns Bookshop off O’Connor Square all in Tullamore.  Alternatively €10.00 can be posted to Offaly County Council  and a copy will be sent out.  They sold speedily on Friday night and there was a limited print so don’t procrastinate if you are thinking of purchasing!

The book describes Clerhane townland and the surrounding area and tells the story of the quarries, their owners and the craftsmen who worked there from early records, to their heyday, decline and eventual closure. The type of stone, the work of cutting and carving and the resultant output and the many fine buildings to which they contributed are also examined.

‘Of the many quarries that operated in Offaly during the centuries before stonecraft declined and almost ended with the arrival of modern concrete, few enjoyed greater prestige than Clerhane, whose crinoidal limestone is one of the most beautiful of Irish building stones. In his meticulous study of the stone industry at Clerhane Declan Ryan has  painstakingly salvaged all that survives from oral record and tradition and the documentary record, and set this against the physical background of the quarries themselves and their geographical context. In highlighting the achievement of the quarrymen of Clerhane this lovely book will do much to draw appreciative attention to this aspect of the environmental heritage of one of the most remarkable places in Offaly, and stimulate comparable attention to other facets of that heritage.
John Feehan, Syngefield, Birr.

the only thing that can exist is an uninterested person."

"One learns of the pain of others by suffering one’s own pain, by turning inside oneself, by finding one’s own soul. It is important to know of pain. It destroys our self-pride, our arrogance, our indifference toward others."    (Chaim Potock)

Crisis in Syria & elsewhere in the Middle East
These places have great historical and religious significance for Christians worldwide.  Because of war & persecution Christians are being forced to flee their homeland.  In Syria the situation is especially critical, as the country faces the worst humanitarian crisis in a generation.  Over 100,000 people have lost their lives in 2 years of war.
In Syria over 8.4 million people – approx half of whom are children- are in need of humanitarian assistance.  Approx 5.8 million people have been forced to abandon their homes, with 2.1 million people seeking refuge in the neighbouring countries of Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Iraq & Egypt.  At least half of these are children.
If current trends continue, over 3.5 million people will have left their country by the end of 2013, putting an enormous burden on the refugee-hosting countries.
For this reason the Bishops together with Trócaire are appealing for your help on next weekend, when you are invited to make a contribution to provide food, water, clothing, shelter, medical & psycho-social supports for those most in need.  If you can help, please put your donation in an envelope, or put something extra in the collection box, - with many thanks for past help.

 TATER PEOPLE
Some people never seem motivated to participate, but are just content to watch while others do the work. They are called "Speck Taters".

Some people never do anything to help, but are gifted at finding fault with the way others do the work. They are called "Comment Taters".

Some people are very bossy and like to tell others what to do, but don't want to soil their own hands. They are called "Dick Taters".

Some people are always looking to cause problems by asking others to agree with them. It is too hot or too cold, too sour or too sweet.
They are called "Agie Taters".

There are those who say they will help, but  somehow just never get around to actually doing the promised help.                                                     They are  called "Hezzie Taters".

Some people can put up a front and pretend to be someone they are not.  They are called "Emma Taters".

Then  there are those who love others and do what they say they will. They are  always prepared to stop whatever they are doing and lend a helping hand.  They bring real sunshine into the lives of others.
They are called "Sweet  Taters".
