Shannonbridge Fishing Report 30th July 2007.

A mixed week with rain sun cloud and mixed. Sunshine yesterday and today.

The river level has risen to 3.46 Metres on scale alongside the Shannonbridge

Bridge. Thanks to all that recorded their catches. Some people had phone cameras

and will try to share their catch with the wwww.shannon-fishery-board.ie site.

- Liam O Reilly from Foxford, Mayo fished Lough Ree from his cruiser on

24th July using a medium size Toby lure with green markings to catch a brown

trout that weighed 6 lbs 2 oz and it tasted great he said.

- Glab Haley from Germany fished the Shannon on a warm 23rd July and used

a spinner to catch a 90 cm. pike which he returned alive.

- Oliver Mc Kiernan from Rathcoole fished the Shannon on a windy 25th July

and used a Voblex lure to catch a 4 lbs pike which he returned alive.

- Jim Gleeson from Birdhill, Tipperary fished on the Shannon on 25th July.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report 24th July 2007.

The river level on Monday evening 23rd July at Shannonbridge was 3.0 metres.

Anglers were scarce on the ground but seven arrived at the weekend that will

hopefully catch some fish. Noticed that the August Motor Boats monthly magazine

has a feature article on ‘Cruising the Shannon’ covering Portumna to

Carrick-on-Shannon.

- Michael O’Neill Junior, from Shankill, Dublin fished from a cruiser on 17th July

in Athlone harbour with worms on a windy day and caught 17 lbs of fish in two

hours. Three roach were all over 1.5 lbs each and he also had bream, hybrid and

perch.

- Steiner Klaus caught a small pike 1.2 kg. while using a blinker when fishing from

his cruiser on 15th July at Carrick-on-Shannon.

- Eamon Phelan from Dansha, Tipperary fished Shannonbridge on a cloudy 18th July

and caught one 5 lbs pike while using a spinner. The fish was returned alive.

- Young Shane O’Rourke from Correen recorded two catches. Using pole and worm

Shane caught 15 perch to 13 oz on the first day. Next day he caught 53 perch to 1 lb

using the pole and worms.

- Chantell Smith from Leicester fished in sunshine at Shannonbridge on 23rd July and

used maggot / caster to catch 10 lbs of roach and hybrids. Could have been better was

her comment and it was her first time fishing.

- Chris Compton, Leicester fished alongside Chantell and used caster / maggot to

catch 12.5 lbs.

- Chris Taylor from Manchester fished at Shannonbridge on a fine 23rd July and caught

his first pike using a rubber lure. It weighed 8 to 10 lbs and chewed up the lure. Magic

was his remark.

- Andy Dalton from Manchester also caught a 5 lbs pike while fishing at Shannonbridge

on 23rd July.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report dated 17th July 2007.

River level on 9th July was 2.57 metres, on Saturday 14th the level was 2.96 metres.

The level on Tuesday 17th July was 3.06 metres at the gauge beside the village bridge.

River levels are getting too high for comfort.

The HOT WATER from the power plant remains out of order.

- Jack Finucane from Tarbert caught a 3.5 lbs trout using a spinner on the River Shannon

on 9th July which was dry and sunny. He felt good catching it.

- Chris Mather from Preston recorded two catches. Fishing a Backwater on 9th July using

a feeder with caster and worm he caught 47 lbs which included 8 bream.

- On 11th July Chris fished the Shannon on a dry and sunny day using waggler with

caster and maggot to catch 58 lbs of fish made up of two bream and the rest were hybrids.

His comment “signs of water recovering at long last”.

-His friend Mike Winrow recorded two catches for the same days and locations.

On the 9th July Mike had a 20 lbs catch on the feeder. On the 11th July his catch was 32 lbs,

consisting of three bream and mostly hybrids.

- Young brothers Jack and Kieran Connaughton from Clonark fished the Shannon

at Shannonbridge on 14th July using worm on the float. Jack had 5 perch and 1 bream and

Kieran caught 3 perch and 1 bream. Both found it good fun and enjoyable.

- Norbert Schubert from Berlin fished in the rain at Mountshannon from a cruiser on 15th July

and had no success with spinner or maggot. He shared his dinner with the fish and used pieces

of steak for hook bait. He caught two large eels and lost another one. Later at Clonmacnois

Norbert used a spinner to catch one fine pike.

GAA News from Jason Mahon

Senior Championship v Rhode.

On Sunday evening next, the 22nd, Shannonbridge will travel to Tullamore to take on Senior kingpins & championship favourites Rhode.

It is a game that Rhode will be huge favourites to emerge victorious. On paper they have a very strong team, boasting numerous county players. However, in recent weeks the Bridge have put in some very decent performances in the league, indeed we have claimed a few major scalps, including Sunday's opponents Rhode. Clara, Ferbane, Shamrocks & Tullamore have all been overturned in the past month and in a game which they really have nothing to lose, Shannonbridge, will be quietly confident of causing a major upset.

After a hugely disappointing first championship outing against Gracefield losing by ten points, The Bridge need to win this match & then the final group game against Erin Rovers in order to progress past the group stages.

Junior A Championship v Gracefield

On Tuesday evening next, the 24th @ 7.30 pm, Shannonbridge will host Gracefield in what is a very important game in the group. After an impressive last-gasp win against Rhode last Sunday week, the Bridge will hope to overturn a very heavy league defeat a couple of months back.

Here's wishing both teams the best of luck for the coming week, and hoping to see plenty of support in the stands for both matches.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report dated 9th July 2007

The river level at Shannonbridge is 2.57 metres on 9th July.

Terry Dawson and some friends from Boston, England used a cruiser

for fishing last week and revisited some of the old Ballinasloe Gala stretches.

Terry told us that his father Herbie Dawson died on 27th May 2007.May he rest in peace.

I feel that the old warrior must have been their guide as –

- Geoff Mottram, Boston had 100 lbs of bream while fishing on the Suck using worm and caster.

- Terry Dawson, Boston on 2nd July had 50 lbs of bream and roach using worm and caster.

- Cyril Cater, Boston told us that it was wet and windy on the 2nd but forgot to record his catch.

- Matthew Kearney, Dublin caught a 7 lbs pike at Shannonbridge on a wet 3rd July.

- Cillian Quinlan, aged 14 years from Ennis used a lure to catch two pike at Shannonbridge

on 3rd July weighing 2 lb and 5 lb.

- Rod Kent from Basingstoke fished Clonmacnois on a wet and windy 4th July from 6.00 pm to 10.15pm

using a swimfeeder and two red maggot to catch 12 bream and one hybrid.

- Andy Henry, London fished the Suck on 6th July in wind and showers using sweetcorn and maggot

to catch 25 lbs bream in early afternoon.

- Martin Regan, Harlow fished the River Suck on 6th July in the evening and used dead bait

to catch four pike of 6 lbs plus. Great fun.

- Karl Cornnwood from Yorkshire fished the Shannon in the sun on 6th July and used a lure

to catch one pike weighing 7 lbs in shallow water.

- Willie Fleming, Dublin fished on the River Brosna on 21st June in bad weather and used a spinner

to catch four pike. ( 9 lb, 6.5 lb and two jacks ). Willie again fished the Brosna on 5th July

and caught one pike of 5 lbs using a spinner.

- Mary Fleming, Lucan, Dublin fished the Brosna on 23rd June in OK weather using a spinner

to catch two pike of 4.5 lbs and 5.5 lbs.

- Clive Barnes from Leeds fished at Correen Ford on 6th July in showers and used dead bait to catch

one pike of 7.5 lbs. He reminded us that on a previous trip he caught a pike just one ounce short

of the 20 lbs Specimen Weight.

Clive fished on the Grand Canal on 8th July in fine weather and used feeder and maggot to catch

12 lbs of roach and hybrids. Best hybrid was 2.5 lbs. Fishing was good in the morning.

- Alan Boreham, Loughrea, fishing on the Shannon on 7h July had a 3.5 lbs rudd using worm

and he took a picture of the fish and promised to forward it to Shannon Fishery Board.ie

- Mike Winrow, Preston fished a Backwater on a fine 8th July and used corn/ worm/ caster to catch

38 lbs of bream and tench and hybrids. Mike lost a few tench besides. Howes That ?.

- Chris Mather from Preston also fished the Backwater on 8th July and used the same tactics as Mike.

Cyril caught 23 lbs of bream, tench and hybrids.

East Anglicans David Saunders and Kevin Boyce fished on the Brosna and Shannon for a week.

Weather was windy and wet for five days with sunshine and dry for the last two days. They used

a feeder with caster, maggot and worm. Combined total weight was 178 lbs. They commented that

it was the worst weeks fishing in 20 years but they still enjoyed it.

- David Young, Leeds fished on the Grand Canal on 8th July and used feeder, maggot and corn to catch

14 lbs of perch, roach and hybrid. Fished good in the morning.

- Paul Airey, Ahascragh fished at the Hot Water stretch at Shannonbridge on 7th July and used

a feeder with a size 14 hook and single corn to catch 50 lbs + of hybrids in five hours fishing.

Yesterday Paul went pike fishing and caught just two single figure pike upstream.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report..Dated 3rd July 2007.

River level is 3.8 Metres at the village bridge, which is surprising

considering it was 2.3 Metres two weeks ago. Seems that the hot water from

the power plant may not be running until the end of August due to repairwork.

-Chris Ford from Bristol had good fun with a whip on the Hot Water stretch

on 27th June catching roach and hybrids. Good fishing he says.

-Richard Reeves fished on the River Suck for his last two days. On 26th June

he caught 12 lbs of roach and hybrids up to a pound in overcast and windy

conditions. Next day was windy and he caught 28 lbs of roach and hybrids

up to 1.25 lbs using maggot caster and feeder. Good end to his stay.

- Mr Schlosser caught two pike to 4.5 kilos and a large perch while fishing from his

cruiser on 29th June using a blinker lure.

- Daniel Hodgson from Halifax and friends fished the Shannon using

three maggots and sweetcorn to catch decent roach and hybrid. Wise men, as

they brought along their own boat to get to their chosen swims.

- Karl Greenwood from Yorkshire fished the Shannon on 2nd July in mixed weather

and used sweetcorn and a feeder to catch 40 lbs of hybrids up to 3 lbs.

Karl found too many pike in the swim. He had to use light weight leader line.

- Geoff Ridge from Yorkshire fished alongside and caught 20 lbs hybrids

on the feeder. He found too many boats parked in the swim.

- Paul Clegg from Doncaster was also in the party and he used feeder and

corn to catch 22 lbs of hybrids. Weeds were a problem for Paul.

- Charlie Canthorne from Doncaster also fished alongside and used

feeder and corn to catch 31.5 lbs of hybrids

Questions people ask
Q. How can I answer my son who says there is no need to belong to any church, just follow your own conscience?
R. The problem is that there are right consciences & wrong ones. If individual conscience alone mattered, then why did Jesus instruct his apostles and send them out to instruct the whole world? Why have any moral teachers at all? One of the functions of the church is to instruct our consciences in the light of God's revealed truth. Of course, if we were all perfect we would not need a church to guide us. The church is a home for imperfect people. (Fr O'Flynn - Intercom)

Questions people ask
Q: ‘Of all the children born of women, a greater than John the Baptist has never been seen; yet the least in the Kingdom of heaven is greater than he is.’ What does this mean?
A: it is not comparing John’s personal holiness with other people, but stating that the time of Jesus’ kingdom is greater than the age of preparation. As the last of those who prepared for Christ, John is called the greatest. But Jesus has raised people to a new level beyond anything in the days of preparation. The least in the New Kingdom belongs to a higher level of life than anybody before Christ. The oak has greater life than the acorn, the chicken than the egg.

Q. Why was there such a negative reaction by many journalists when the Holy Father spoke about hell?
A. I must admit that I too was surprised by the vehemence of these articles. The Pope has the responsibility of proclaiming the teaching of Jesus, and hell is a part of that teaching. In reminding people about hell the Pope was merely doing his duty. The negative reaction says more about those who wrote in such a manner. Maybe, the reality of hell does not suit their agenda.
