Blessed Pauline Jaricot beatified May 22nd 2022 Rome

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

 ‘Peace I bequeath to you,

my own peace I give you’ ‘

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace’. These eloquent sentiments expressed by legendary American rock guitarist, Jimmi Hendrix make the important connection between love and peace, and mirror precisely the words of Jesus in the Upper Room as He bids farewell to His disciples. Having appealed to His friends to love one another Jesus now bequeaths to them the gift of peace. Peace actually begins with love, and we find peace when we live our lives through the lens of love. It’s not something that can be achieved, but something one must become. The peace which Jesus offers is an inner peace, knowing as He does that it is ‘peace within that makes beauty without’. It is His gift, then, and it is only by opening our hearts to Him that we can receive and foster that precious gift. A world without God can never know peace. No God, no peace; know God, know peace!

‘Peace is a gift of God, but requires our efforts. Let us be people of peace in word and deed. Please, please let us not get used to war. May the leaders of nations hear people’s plea for peace’. (Pope Francis).

CONGRATULATIONS to the boys and girls in our Parish who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this week. These are weeks of great grace and blessing for all of us. A special thank y ou to our teachers our parents and our children.

Fifth Sunday of Easter

Love one another just as I have loved you’

Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel recounts how Auschwitz camp authorities advised prisoners to think only of themselves if they wished to survive. Yet, invariably, it was those who insisted on remembering loved ones who were more likely to come through their desperate ordeal. There are two main doctrines in the Bible; love God and love people. If we get other doctrines wrong, but get these two right, we will still be in good standing with the Lord. The command to love was central to the preaching of Jesus, and it was certainly at the heart of His final address to His disciples in the Upper Room. The love He speaks of takes us beyond ourselves to be the best of ourselves, and the measure of our love will decide the measure of our happiness. Sixteenth century Spanish mystic, St. John of the Cross, expressed this challenging teaching with striking clarity: ‘in the evening of life we shall be judged on love alone’. Interestingly, Jesus did not command His disciples to love the whole world, but rather, to love one another. When Mother Teresa reflected on the implications of these words of the Lord she offered this wise and practical advice: ‘Love begins by taking care of the closest ones…‘If you want to change the world go home and love your family’.

Easter Prayer to Our Lady The Regina Caeli  (Latin for “Queen of Heaven”) is said in place of the Angelus during Eastertide.

V. Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia.

R. For He whom you did merit to bear, alleluia. V. Has risen, as he said, alleluia.

R. Pray for us to God, alleluia.

V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. R. For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.

Let us pray. O God, who gave joy to the world through the resurrection of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant we beseech Thee, that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

 Shaping the Future with Hope.

DIOCESAN ASSEMBLY

A gathering of delegates from every parish in the diocese takes place this Saturday 14th in St. Mel’s College, Longford. After three years of discussion and consultation among parish groups three main areas have been identified for reflection as we plan to shape the future with hope: Mission to Families; Mission to Youth; Formation of Lay People. One statistic helps to underline the changing face of our Church going forward: By 2030 there will be just 24 priests in active ministry in the entire diocese of 41 parishes, most of them in their 60s. It will be a lay driven Church or not at all!

Jesus make our Diocesan Family of 41 parishes, a place of joy and laughter, where all our children will be safe and free and feel at home. Jesus, you promise us Your Holy Spirit to guide us always until the end of time”.

OFFALY PRO-LIFE QUIZ NIGHT A quiz night will take place on Wednesday May 25th at 8pm.in Hough's pub, Banagher. A table of 4 people will cost 20 euro,i.e. 5euro per person. Please support this vitally important cause and you could win a great prize.

PRAYER FOR THE PEOPLE OF UKRAINE  Loving God, We pray for the people of Ukraine. For all those suffering or afraid, that you will be close to them and protect them. We pray for world leaders, for compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices. We pray for the world; that in this moment of crisis, we may reach out in solidarity to our brothers and sisters in need. May we walk in your ways so that peace and justice become a reality for the people of Ukraine and for all the world. Amen.
