Snow, Carols and Christmas Lights in Shannonbridge

As we head into Christmas week we are experiencing the severest weather for years - snow and icy roads and temperatures down to -10C. Great to see the village lit up with christmas lights and especially the lights on the bridge looking wonderful. Also to hear the carol singers in the freezing cold outside the church before evening Mass yesterday. Many thanks to all the volunteers involved, it certainly helps to lift the spirits.

Shannonbridge A.R.A. Social is postponed for the present.

Questions people ask Q. Mary was betrothed to Joseph. Was this like being engaged or was it more? A. Marriage customs at that time and place were different from ours. Betrothal meant that the couple were married with full conjugal rights but the woman still lived at her parents’ house under the male authority of that house. Joseph knew that the child of Mary’s pregnancy wasn’t his. In planning a divorce he was observing the law but he would do it with total respect for Mary. Perhaps, knowing the depth of Mary’s holiness, he already suspected some divine mystery was involved.

Clonmacnois N.S.

St. Ciaran’s Community Alert: The committee would like to inform people that our application for funding has been approved and installation of personal and home security equipment will commence early in the New Year. We would like to thank everyone for their help and support during the year and wish a happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year to all.

"Life is a constant Advent season: we are continually waiting to become, to discover, to complete, to fulfil. Hope, struggle, fear, expectation and fulfilment are all part of our Advent experience. The world is not as just, not as loving, not as whole as we know it can and should be. But the coming of Christ and his presence among us—as one of us —give us reason to live in hope: that light will shatter the darkness, that we can be liberated from our fears and prejudices, that we are never alone or abandoned.
May this Advent season be a time for bringing hope, transformation and fulfilment into the Advent of our lives."

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes

Annual General Meeting.
In the Chairman’s and Secretaries’ reports a successful year was reviewed. Our Intermediate team got to the semi-final stage of the championship before bowing out to Durrow. The huge voluntary effort by club members and the involvement of the community in the official opening of our pitch by Mr. Christy Cooney, President of the GAA and the club’s involvement with the Celebrity Bainisteoir TV programme, sends the club into the new year with renewed spirit. In addition, our under twelve footballers contested the U12 B Final, before losing to Kilcormack / Killoughy in a replay. This was our first underage final for several years. A total of €8,550 was raised for the Aware Organisation by the club during the year. A big thank you to sponsor Kieran Hynes, Deerpark Windows and to all others who sponsored the club this year.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom) Q. I’ve struggled for years with an addiction. I keep on falling. Is there any hope for me? A. There is always hope for the simple reason that God’s love for you never ceases, no matter how often you fall. God’s help comes in many ways such as medical help, addiction counselling, prayer, pilgrimage to a holy place and especially through the understanding and support of fellow strugglers in an addiction fellowship. Advent is the season of hope. Come, Lord Jesus, into our desert areas and places of darkness.

1. In response to the question of John, Jesus let his actions speak for him. Some people show by the way they live what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Who has given you such an example? Perhaps there have been times when you have done the same for others.

2. John marked the end of an era, Jesus the beginning of a new one. In our lives we are constantly been asked to respond to new challenges. We have to be able to let go, to move forward in hope and love into a new situation. How do we honour the past and yet be free to move on into a new experience? (John Byrne, o.s.a.)

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom) Q. Isn’t Advent a season of preparing for Christmas? Why is there never any reference to this on the First Sunday of Advent? A. Advent is certainly a preparation for Christmas but it has other dimensions too. Advent prepares for the coming of Christ, past, present and future. Christmas celebrates Christ’s coming once upon a time in past history. But it also includes the coming of Christ to us each present day. And its future dimension is a reminder to be ready for the coming of Christ at the end of life, a date we do not know. The future coming of Christ is the focus of attention in the liturgy of Advent’s first Sunday.

Garden Birds Survey starts next Monday

The annual Birdwatch Ireland Survey of garden birds starts next Monday 29th November. The idea is to get an accurate estimate of the numbers of garden birds in Ireland by doing a count in your garden and recording the number of each species on a special form for each week until 21st February 2011. The form is then posted to Birdwatch Ireland to become part of the overall national picture.
Forms are available for download from www.birdwatchireland.ie or from Rose Ryan 090 9674176.
As the cold weather gets underway, the birds will appreciate a little bit of birdfeed and a drink of water.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom) Q. Jesus said to the repentant thief, ‘I promise you, today you will be with me in paradise.’ Doesn’t that mean there is no purgatory? A. Hold on a second, it’s not so simple. The text is not clear whether today refers to the day when the promise was made or to the time when the promise would be fulfilled. It depends on where the translator puts the comma. Then again, what does today mean? Scripture tells us that with the Lord a thousand years is like a single day. Furthermore, the promise made to one man does not necessarily refer to everybody, especially since not everybody is as repentant as that dying man beside Jesus on Calvary.

Luker's Annual Turnip Awards

Donal and Myra Scoop Top Turnip Trophy.

Donal and Myra Guinan hit the jackpot in the Luker’s Annual Turnip Awards when they were the most accurate in guessing the weight of the turnip. The huge swede, supplied by local grower Rory Greene and weighed by Sean Kelly, observed by independent scrutineers Flannery and Reynolds, tipped the scales at 18lbs- 8ozs. Donal and Myra were nearest with 18-7, Cathal Daly next at 18–6 and Danny Farrelly 3rd with 18–4. Well done to all. Some growers are reported to be reviewing their choice of seed variety ahead of next year’s competition!

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom) Q. All these floods, tsunamis, earthquakes and disasters of recent years, are they a sign that God is angry with the world and that the end of this world is near? So I have been told. A. Jesus in today’s Gospel tells us not to be misled by false, self-appointed prophets. He also tells us not to be frightened. At the time of the terrible Black Death plague, the mystic Julian of Norwich was granted a vision of God holding all that is like a little hazelnut in the palm of his hand. She was assured that God makes all things well. The God of love tells us not to be afraid.

Questions people ask Q. My mother was a genuine and devout Christian all her life. I believe she is now with God so why should I pray for her? Is it alright to pray with her? A. To pray with her is a great idea. A special moment at Mass is when we join with the angels and saints in proclaiming the song of heaven, ‘Holy, holy, holy’. Those who are with Jesus in heaven are now part of the perfect worship of the Father. Our Mass is an anticipation of perfect worship. Your good mother is part of the real thing while we are part of the rehearsal.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom) Q. Recently at a wedding in another church everybody was invited to take communion. But at a Catholic wedding the priest at the start said that only practising Catholics should receive. Isn’t this rather narrow-minded and hurtful? A. Catholic belief is that receiving the Lord in the Blessed Eucharist is the greatest privilege of our religion. The Catholic Church will not water down this doctrine and safeguards it with certain regulations: the recipient must be baptised and not in the state of mortal sin. A period of fasting is recommended as a mark of respect. By upholding these regulations we let others know how sacred the Blessed Eucharist is in our religion.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report....dated 26th October 2010
The level of the river at Shannonbridge today is 2.67 metres.
There are a number of what are called non-national anglers
fishing the waters at Shannonbridge but it is difficult
to find out what they caught.Yesterday one of those purchased
six wire traces used for pike fishing in the afternoon.
On enquiring had he caught many fish he replied 'No Fish, No Fish',
>Ten year old Jonois Kersken from Dusseldorf fished the Shannon on
17th October using worm on a fine day to catch three perch.Released.
>On 21/10 Jord v Zelst from Holland who is also ten years old
fished the Shannon on a fine day using float and maggot to catch
ten roach which were also released.
>David Mullee from Kilteel fished at Shannonbridge on 5th October
David used a spinner and caught and released a pike weighing 20 lbs.
Good to see English anglers Derek and Mike visiting Shannonbridge
for the weekend.
Weather forecast is for showers on three days out of the next four.

Questions people ask Q. Every year I have this problem on Mission Sunday. Who gave Christians or any other religion the right to impose their beliefs on other people? A. It was Jesus Christ who sent out his followers to proclaim his message by lifestyle and word to people of every nation and time. If your concern is about people’s rights, then remember that people have the right to know the truth about Jesus Christ who came to teach and save all people. Anybody who appreciates God’s love and mercy as revealed in Jesus Christ would want all people to share this belief and hope.

Earn Self-Esteem (Dr. Lynn Scoresby)
"You cannot give your child self-esteem. Your child’s self-esteem will not ‘grow in proportion to the attention or presents lavished on her,’ according to educational therapist Lawrence J. Greene in 1001 Ways to Improve Your Child’s Schoolwork. ‘She will have to earn her self-esteem by solving her own problems, overcoming challenges and dealing with setbacks and failures. She will earn it with her own hard work and perseverance. She will learn to appreciate herself as she develops her talents and experiences her power.’"

>Graham from Tadley England is over for a short fishing holiday. On 18/10 he fished at Banagher and caught 25 lbs of roach using caster/maggot.All caught on the stick float.
An article in the paper recently had a photograph of Longford Cathedral with a temporary roof fitted. There was a bad fire in the Cathedral about last Christmas.Bishop O Reilly was announcing that the walls were secure but work on the inside may take four years to complete.Meanwhile Bishop O Reilly has named Saint Mary's Church as the Cathedral for the diocese in the meantime. Saint Mary's Church in Athlone has connections with Shannonbridge.

Brigie Cassidy was in Shannonbridge on Sunday for the Anniversary Mass for Mary Burke(3 years) and Martin Burke(4 years).Brigie told us that the last Parish Priest in Saint Mary's was a Father Kilroe who was born in Shannonbridge and was her great grand uncle. He went to America to collect funds to help build Saint Mary's.After it was built the church became one of the Diocesan church and the Parish Priest was replaced by an Administrator

Next Sunday is Mission Sunday
"Two thousand years since the start of Mission, there are still vast geographical, cultural, human and social areas which have not yet been penetrated by Christ and his Gospel" (Pope John Paul).
Support the proclamation of the Gospel message by prayer, offering of suffering and generous financial contribution.
In his letter for Mission Sun Pope Benedict wrote: “Proclaiming the Gospel belongs to the entire Church, as the Church is missionary by its very nature.”
The money raised by the Universal Church on Mission Sun is made available, in its entirety, through the Universal Fund to the poorest & neediest missions.
¨¨¨¨
Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn - Intercom ) Q. If God can read our inmost hearts and already knows our secret thoughts, why must we use words to pray? A. God does not need our words but in many instances it’s we who need words to focus our attention, to clarify our thoughts and help us to persevere. The effort to find our own words, or using prayers known by heart or prayers such as the Psalms or the Lord’s Prayer draw us into the world of prayer. Words are not always needed and may even get in the way of silent pondering. Saint Paul wrote that the Spirit within us can express our pleas in ways that could never be put into words (Romans 8:26).

On 12th October Moralba and Maldonado Brito from Venezuela
stopped off in Shannonbridge after visiting Clonmacnois.
Maldonado had travelled from Venezuela to Ireland and
linked up with her sister Moralba who works in Paris.
They are spending eight days driving around Ireland
before returning to Paris where Maldonado plans to stay
for three weeks before returning home.
In Venezuela the Family name is a combination of both
parents when they get married.
They have no family connections with Ireland and just
chose to spend some time here.In Venezuela some 90%
of the population are Catholic.
The sisters have been blessed with great weather for
their holiday.

Cousin Annie has a 92 year old golfing friend in America who greets the day with
"Thank the Lord I'm on the right side of the grass this morning".

Today a Mr and Mrs Mc Carten from Brisbane stopped by in Shannonbridge to see the river bridge on their way to Clonmacnois.Mr Mc Carten told us that his family were in the shipping business collecting scrap metal from Belfast.A search of one telephone book showed about six entries for his name based mostly around Ballyshannon in County Donegal. He told us that in Brisbane there was a well known man named Michael Killeen living there.

Last week 28 people from the small German town Hundstruck Brau came on holiday on the River Shannon. They hired six cruisers with half starting from Portumna and the other half starting from Carrick on Shannon.Mid week they met and stayed overnight in Shannonbridge.
They all wore jackets with "Rautour 2010".Ingole Hess told that he has holidayed in Ireland 125 times. He has a collection of some 300 books on Ireland and he told us that he is a friend of Lobo from Beckenfert whose hobby is making clocks from slate.

Shannonbridge has a population of near 100 crows and jackdaws. Today Mick Killeen got the impression that one of the birds had optained sponsorship as it landed in the pub yard and caught a Tayto Cheese and Onion crisp bag in its mouth and flew away. It was careful to leave the Tayto bag hanging down for all and sundry to view as it went off for a snack.

This weeks Offaly Independent tells us that the Google Photographic map of Offaly Goes Live with the launch of Google Street View.It uses digital photography taken last year to create a panorama effect.Unfortunately it had no details of how to get to the site but have fun in the search.

Shannonbridge Church is in its second week of inside decoration and all is going nicely.
We even have our own version of moving statues as the painter reaches different areas.

Met a German visitor with the unusual name of Heinz who told us that he was a friend of Harry Rowald the writer.Heinz was in Shannonbridge in 1986 and he reminded me that then I had my head wrapped in a bandage. At that time he asked me what had happened my head and I told him that the doctor had bored a hole in my head and found nothing and put the bandage around it.Heinz visited again on 3rd October travelling by car.

Taughmaconnell Heritage and Historical Society are unveiling a Memorial Bust to the late Governor John G.Downey on Friday 15th October in Taughmaconnell village.Governor Downey was the 7th Governor of California State and was a a native of the parish of Taughmaconnell.

The Bainisteoir football match on RTE on Sunday c6.30 should show lots of interesting views of the area as the cameras visited Clonmacnois etc some days before the match.

Michael Kelly from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne England, son of Peter Kelly, who was a butcher in Shannonbridge is over for the Ballinasloe Fair.Michael went to school in Shannonbridge and is a brother of Katherine and Rita.Michael has some good memories of life in Shannonbridge and tells us that he plans to write them down and send them to this website.

Also around tor the opening of the Fair last weekend was Eamon Lyons and family from County Down.Eamon is a brother of Tony and Noel who live in Kilcock and of Gerry Lyons who lives in Boston USA.

Saturday 2nd October the well known German visitor known around Shannonbridge as Rheinhart arrived on his Silverline Cruiser with his sisters Uschib and Gerlinde for a week on the river.Rheinhart has been visiting this area for well over thirty years. This year as usual he took some of his closest friends for trips on the river. His sister Gerlinde is fond of walking and was enquiring from John in the tourist office today about walking the Grand Canal from Dublin to Shannonharbour and any other walkways.
Friend of Rheinhart Martin Rosster was also on the river this week with some friends and met up with Rheinhart.Martin is well known locally as he was one of the group of friends that bought The Walsh Home in Clonfinlough many years ago and visits regularly by land.

The Irish Catholic newspaper www.irishcatholic.ie recently featured Parishes in County Offaly.Their next edition had a number of photographs taken at the blessing and opening of the new playground in Shannonbridge locatated on the field next the church and on the mouth of the road to the Power Station.

Recently I noticed a lorry driver park his lorry alongside the new playground and visit the Church for a few minutes. One morning I met him coming out from the Church and enquired who he was.He told me that his name was Daithi Healy and he had delivered a load of sand to the Power Station.Daithi works for Paddy Murphy Trucks in Macroom and he has got into the practise of saying a prayer and lighting a candle before commencing the homeward journey of some 130 miles.Well done Daithi.
Fishing Report Shannonbridge ...dated 8th October 2010
The river level today on Shannonbridge gauge reads 3.5 metres.Floodwater has gone from most of the land beside the river.Weather has been good with many days of sun and wind and the river has been flowing fast. But there is still lots of water in the river.
>Bill Lanmert from Banbury fished at Shannonharbour on 1st/10 with wind and showers using a maggot and feeder to catch 30lbs of bream, roach and rudd.Six bream were 3.5 lbs each, and six rudd and six rudd all weighed about 12 ounces each.
>Tony Chard Banbury fished alongside Bill and used maggot and feeder to catch 18 lbs of hybrids and skimmers.Best fish weighed 1.5lbs.
>Tony Chard fished The Boathouse on the Suck on 27/09 in sun and wind again using maggot and feeder to catch 15lbs of skimmers. Best fish was 2lbs.
> Ralph Hoiky fished Shannonharbour on 1st/10 in sun and rain using maggot and feeder to catch 24 lbs of roach and hybrids.
>BisQil Frant from Austria fished at Clonmacnois on 7/10 using a gummie fish to catch a 97cm pike which was returned alive. He celebrated on a Cuban cigar.
>Terry Dawson and his son Andrew are again visiting the area, but this time by cruiser.
On the morning of 7/10 Terry and Andrew reported that the bay upstream from the bridge at Shannonbridge was alive with fish topping. The day was sunny and windy and they chose a bay on the Such near the mouth of the river.Using maggot and feeder they fished the opposite bank with little result. Then Andrew suggested that they fish near their boat. The fish were there and they caught 38 lbs of roach/bream hybrids. Will they go back there again or move on?.Hopefully they will record other catches later.

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes

Under 12 B Football Championship Replay.
Shannonbridge had to give best to a stronger Kilcormac / Killoughy team, on Sunday last, at Banagher, in their championship final replay. They kept in touch during the first half and had their best period immediately after the break, scoring a goal and point, to reduce the arrears to just two points. Although gradually overcome by a physically stronger opposition, they never gave up and battled to the end. Final score Kilcormac / Killoughy 0-15 Shannonbridge 1-3. Well done to our team and their mentors, in reaching the county final and taking it to a replay. As the first parish under age team for some years, it’s an important step and will give great encouragement for next year. Team: Barry Rohan, Bill Egan, Ronan Devery, Cathal O’Shea, Emmet Molloy, Saul O’Carroll, Elle McEvoy (Captain), Ronan Hynes (1-0), Kieran Mannion, Dylan Quinn, Bryan Rohan, Jack Darcy (0-2), Gavin Kelly, Jeremy Rigney, Cian Healy (0-1), Kevin Flynn, Jack Ryan, Paul Rigney, Aaron Brazil, Maria Egan, Dylan O’Duffy, Oisin Anderson, Michaele Anderson, Darragh O’Shea.

Celebrity Bainisteoir.
The Shannonbridge v Castleisland game is the subject of next Sunday’s programme, 10th October, on RTE 1, at 6.30pm.

Shannobridge / Doon Lottery.
There was no winner of last week’s jackpot of € 14,400. There were two match three winners. The numbers drawn were 8, 13, 25, 26. This week’s jackpot is €14,600.

Congratulations.
Congratulations to Club Chairman, Damien Brazil, on being selected to referee last week’s Asian Games in Hong Kong. Also best of luck to Damien taking charge of next week’s senior final, between Clara and Rhode.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom) Q. What did Jesus mean when he said that a tiny seed of faith could uproot a tree and plant it in the sea? A. It is a colourful way of saying that faith can achieve what would be impossible to our own efforts without the aid of grace. The context of this saying is where Jesus teaches that there should be no limit to the times we are to forgive others. Forgiving may seem impossible but faith is powerful enough to pull up the roots of bitterness from the heart and cast it aside … like a tree uprooted and cast into the sea. With the grace of God people can achieve great healing of memories.

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes

Intermediate Football Championship Semi Final.
Shannonbridge were unlucky to bow out of the Intermediate Football Championship, losing to Durrow by two points (1-12 to 0-13), at O’Connor Park, on Saturday. Shannonbridge had more of the possession in the first half, but were unable to convert this into a scoring advantage. They led by four points to three after twenty minutes, thanks to scores from Paul Moloney, Paul Deeley and Anthony Kelly. From then to half time, the lead changed hands three times, with Durrow going to the break leading by 0-7 to 0-6. Shannonbridge introduced John Egan and Karol Kelly for Peadar Kelly and Declan Kelly, at the start of the second half and levelled the game with an Anthony Kelly free. However, Durrow replied, scoring a goal and a point in two minutes. As Kieran Kearns replaced Paul Deeley, Shannonbridge attacked and were thrown a lifeline when Trevor Mahon’s pass to Eamon Kelly led to the latter being fouled. A penalty was awarded, but Niall Price’s spot kick was saved. Three Shannonbridge points in succession reduced the gap to the minimum with eight minutes left –(0-11 to 1-9), only for Durrow to stretch the margin again to four points. As time ran out, Shannonbridge pressed hard for the winner scoring the last two points. Full time score 1-12 to 0-13.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn –Intercom) Q. At a time when the Church is struggling, I often wonder why God doesn’t perform some great miracles to bring people back. A. While we are struggling in Western Europe, remember that the Church is youthful and vibrant in many parts of the world. As for miraculous signs, critics will always find reasons to reject or doubt them. When Jesus performed miracles those who did not believe remained unconvinced. Some said his power came from the devil! Jesus put it like this: ‘If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead’.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom)Q. How can I answer my son who has me demented constantly criticising the Pope? He says that educated people today don’t need the Church to teach them how to live. A. If he is so highly educated, ask him to read what the Pope has actually written. Challenge him to read the Encyclical Letter, Charity in Truth, which addresses the ethical questions underlying social injustice, the financial meltdown, rights and responsibilities, third world poverty and hunger, the meaning of life. The world would be a much better place if the Church’s social teaching was heeded. I find that most people who criticise the Pope have never actually read anything he wrote.

You are welcome to use anything I write. I did send Alison Munson several emails during the summer and they did not come back undeliverable. Perhaps it went into her SPAM as it may not recognize me. I have heard the name Potts Island and this clears it up for me. Still have not had a chance to check the CD made for me but plan to do it this weekend. I am a director of a local child care center with approximately 95 children ages 2-12 (before and after school also). So life is busy. Our economy has not been particularly good as I understand it is same in Ireland. I do think things are steady and not getting worse in the states. In some areas (not housing) things have picked up. I voted for Barack Obama and I believe he is very intelligent and level headed, but he inherited a mess. We live about 45 minutes drive from Washington D.C. in the western mountains which look similar to Ireland. I was married in the mountains last June in an area by Camp David where presidents spend holiday. Frederick County was a big farming area but more urban sprawl has taken over the farmland. This is very upsetting to many people, myself included. Fortunately, there is a effort to go back to farmers markets and local produce and recycling. Still it seems the states are so spread out and jobs are not in local communities so people must travel. We need some of the rain you all have been getting. Very dry summer here so corn and many crops are not good. Makes it more difficult for local farmers to sustain their way of life. Farming is definately more corporate owned here than local farming. Hopefully this will change back. take care, Louisa Potts
I just read your latest Shannonbridge newsletter and appreciate your efforts to put the Potts history together. Just to help, Trumperant is the correct spelling and were owners of Correen Castle and various times and they married into the Potts family. I've just received a CD from Myles Monaghan who's father now owns the house. This CD includes the history for the house. I will check this CD out shortly. John Trumperant was the maternal uncle of the first William Potts who lived in Correen Castle and as far as I know at this point probably the first owner. As for the ring, the first William Potts of Correen sent the ring to his first cousin, named William Potts also, by transport through Temple in 1756. We have a letter that states this. I assume Temple is the embankment area now called Temple Bar (Barr). My family line comes from the Potts who left Ireland for the Barbadoes, eventually ending in Maryland, USA. William Potts received the ring on visit to England and I am the 9th generation of Potts to wear the ring and the first female. Our visit to Ireland was wonderful. The people of Ireland are very kind and hospitable. Life seems slower there. Since I've been back in the states the pace is hectic and I am trying to catch up on my work. I miss the slower way of life you are most fortunate to have in the beautiful island where you live. I will be in touch. And again, it was good to meet you and all the wonderful people of the Shannonbridge area. Louisa Potts

The Birr Community Nursing Unit have developed a treat for their patients by taking them out for the night,Tuesday night it Shannonbridge was the choice. At 8pm the bus arrived in Shannonbridge and some ten residents of the Unit and family and helpers alighted.Among the patients were Tim Devery,Glebe,Kieran Curley,Crevagh and Joe Feighery from Brackagh.Lorraine Devery,Tim Devery's niece had arranged the Irish Traditinal Group to play music and some light refreshments were served in the two hours before they departed home at 10pm.
Phil Kelly nee Kearns and Kathleen Mc Cormack were two of the helpers looking afterthegroup.
Kathleen's parents were Mick Mc Cormack and Kathleen Mc Manus who once lived in Leitra.By coincidence Kathleen told us that she was a twin sister to Father Ignatius Mc Cormack who preached the homily at The Pattern in Clonmacnois on Sunday last.Kathleen promised to get a copy of the homily for posting on this web site.

Results for this years Tidy Town Competition were posted on the papers on Tuesday.
Today was generally dry with sunshine. The river level has risen and there is a good chunk of water on the callows.
Tuesday afternoon 14/9 an Aldo May from Chicago arrived with a framed photograph of the actor George Brent.Aldo was born in Taghmon Wexford, was baptised in St.Fintans Church. He emigrated to USA when he was fifteen.Aldo is now a retired Police Security Officer and he is on his 99th visit to Ireland at present.
Aldo told us that he has copies of every film that George Brent acted in and he has an amount of books about the films and the stars from that era.
He reckons that Chicago is a Daly City as a Daly served the longest period as Lord Mayor of Chicago and now his son has beaten that record.

Friends of Noel Fenton Doon, Nick and Barbara Mooney who stopped by on Wed 8th Sept and are now living in Tasmania told us that they had watched the TV program'3 Men Go To Ireland'which was shown in the last few weeks in Tasmania. They recognised Killeens dog Moby from the TV film.

The 1911 Census is availble on computer.

hopefully will bring up the families that lived in the village then.Change Shannonbridge to other local areas like Cloniffeen,Cloniff,Clondelara,Clerhane, etc.Or change county to Galway for example
Kate Thorhill was driving across the bridge at Shannonbridge on Sat 11th Sept when suddenly a group of small birds landed on the road in front of the car. Then a hawk swooped down, chose one of the birds and flew away.Bit like a live Lotto Draw.
On Monday while fishing on the backriver near the bridge observed a Sparrow Hawk chasing a Kingfisher bird. The Kingfisher dove into the water several times and happy ending it escaped free.

On Saturday Brid from Donegal visited Shannonbridge.Brid is a native Irish speaker and also a singer. She has her own webpage and has a number of songs in Irish for you to listen to.
Log on to www.brid.at for a listen.

It seems that what was probably the first post-office in Shannonbridge was located in what is now known as Prices House. The family that owned the house and operated the post office were named Charters. This family originally came from France and had connections in Portarlington.John Price bought the house from the Charters and the post office was then in Christy Cook's,which is the building now owned by Nugents Butcher-shop.After Mr and Mrs Cook died the post office moved to Fitzpatricks shop, now Shannonbidge Pottery shop.
After Fitzpatricks Richie Brown operated the post office for a time in the Fitzpatrick building.
The present post office is located in Morans Gala Store,
Over sixty years ago the post was delivered on bicycle to Shannonbridge from Ballinasloe. The man on the bike was Oliver O Grady. The post office authority erected a simple shelter near The Grand Gate for the use of post deliverer O Grady. He waited around for the day and collected the post in the evening to take it to Ballinasloe.

During this years Heritage Week Declan Ryan prepared a walkaround that started on the riverside. The walk and talk covered many aspects including the village bridge and the swivel bridge now a showpiece on the jetty, the Shannon Navigation and early work on the Shannon, the early fields works over 200 years ago and The Magazine and Fortifications. The site of Rachra Castle at Shannonbridge was visited and the site of the old Police Barracks and the Lockkeepers House beside the bridge. The event was most enjoyable and hopefully the notes used will be available for others to read.
Only this week I heard that Patrick Belton and his wife Kate were the Lockhouse Keepers. They had four children - Frank to California,Tim to Boston,Kate to USA and Annie who died in Ireland.
Frank Belton wrote a poem titled 'Memories of Shannonbridge'which was used on his memorial card.
Paddy had a son and niece - Jimmy and Sissy Belton who came from County Louth and Jimmy took charge of the Lockhouse and the Grand Canal Stores.Their sister Delia married John Price.

Many people call The Long Island upstream from Shannonbridge by the name Potts Island. The portion of the island nearer the village bridge is called Lamb Island and as was pointed out on the walkabout there lived Michael McCann who wrote O Donnell Abu.

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes

Intermediate Football Championship.
Shannonbridge qualified for the Semi Final of the Intermediate Championship, overcoming Rhode by 2-9 to 0-7, at Mucklagh, on Sunday. Rhode were first to score, having two points on the board, before Paul Deeley opened Shannonbridge’s account after eight minutes. They were still in arrears 0-3 to 0-4, when Dermot Turley and Rhode’s Gareth Hickey were dismissed after twenty minutes. Shannonbridge got a lift from a monster point, from a free, by Anthony Kelly before Eamon Kelly, who had moved to full forward in a switch with Trevor Mahon, laid on a defence splitting pass for his brother Declan to score a goal on twenty seven minutes. Half time score 1-5 to 0-5. Rhode were again first to score after the break and but for a shot that hit the angle of the post and cross-bar and, somehow, stayed out and a couple of fine saves by Liam Griffin would have taken the lead. Shannonbridge upped their game as the half wore on and the best score of the day was a point in the twenty second minute by Karol Kelly, after Kieran Flannery, Anthony Kelly and Colm Kenny were involved in a movement that covered the length of the field. Some further items on Correen Castle.

Louisa was interested in the owners of Correen Castle since the Potts
were in residence.
Last night I was talking to two neighbours about this and they told me
that after Potts it was Kenny then Caley or Kaley, then Major
Lloyd, then Don Beddy and present owner is Doctor John Monaghan.
Many of the Potts names on the family tree line were William Trumpeter
Potts and the two locals told me that the first Potts was a trumpeter
for Oliver Cromwell when he invaded Ireland in the mid 1600's
A John Rigney was the driver for the last Potts in Correen and the
transport was a horse or pony and cart.
I have been told that the last Potts in Correen Castle died in Africa
Five people - Fiona Keyes,Ciaran Hoey,Warren O'Hare,Michelle Murray and Adam Lynch arrived in Shannonbridge on Tuesday 7th September. The group
had decided to walk from Lucan to Galway on a charity walk in aid of Cystic Fibrosis.Starting on Saturday they had already stopped over at Allenwood,Daingean,The Blueball near Tullamore, and Shannonbridge and have plans to stopover at Kilconnell and Athenry and then on to Galway.
By Tuesday they had raised 1500 Euros for the cause
and you can read more about their walk on http://mycharity.ie/event/LucanGalwaywalk/
Wishing them well with their walk.

Shannonbridge in Intermediate Quarter Final Next Sunday.

Shannonbridge play Rhode in the Quarter Final of the Intermediate Championship next Sunday, 12th Sept, in Mucklagh. The game kicks off at 12.00 noon. Wishing the lads the best of luck and all support will be very much appreciated.
On Monday 5th September Louisa Potts from Maryland USA stopped by on her honeymoon.Louisa has a great interest in the Potts Family who once lived in Correen Castle as her family are from the same Potts Lineage. She had looked at the Shannonbridge website and copied some comments posted there when some years ago an Alison Munson was in Ireland seeking information on the same Potts family.
Louisa was wearing a gold ring that had been handed down through the Potts family for generations.
The ring was intended to be worn by a male member of the family.Louisa's father had no sons and so it was passed on to her.Louisa has two daughters Kathryn and Alison so it looks like another woman will be the next wearer. The ring has been passed down through nine lines of the Pott Family to date.
Louisa has a neatly line of the Potts Family which they promised to share with this website.
Louisa has tried to contact Alison Munson without success.I had a look at my computer contacts and there at the very top was Alison Munson. Her e-mail address may have changed in the meantime but when I went downstairs to give it to Louisa alas she had departed.
If Alison Munson reads this she might contact me with her new e-mail.
