St. Ciaran’s Community Alert
October 24th heralds the switchover to digital TV.  If you are unsure of what you need to do in advance of this date a meeting will be held in Shannonbridge Hall on August 7th at 9pm and in Clonfanlough Hall on August 2nd at 9pm to advise people in respect of changes.  If you want to avail of personal safety equipment through the Seniors Alert programme contact any committee member.  A cutback in funding means less equipment is available so sign up before other cuts are implemented.

Shannonbridge Action Group
The Shannonbridge Napoleonic Fortifications self-guided tour was officially launched by local historian Declan Ryan on Tuesday 15th May.  It was well supported on the day with the Active Retirement Group availing of a trip on the Shannon on the River Queen boat and a visit to Clonmacnois visitor centre.  Many thanks to Declan and all who assisted in bringing this project to completion.

On Sunday 19th August as part of the National Heritage Week, a guided tour of the Fortifications will take place commencing at 2pm on the quayside behind the Tourist & Community Office.  This tour offers a greater insight into the historical nature and significance  of the fortifications.  The tour also includes a history of the Shannon navigation relevant to Shannonbridge.  Access to the interior courtyard of the Fortifications is provided for this day only.  Leaflets detailing other events around the county can be picked up in the Tourist Office.

On the 9th September we had hoped to undertake a Fun3athlon.  However due to insurance and approval constraints we have to postpone this event until next year.  Good news for some as you now have more time to train and prepare.

Shannonbridge Action Group is striving to improve the village and its environs.  If you would like to get involved or have ideas on ways to improve the locality we would like to hear from you.

Shannonbridge Active Retirement Group
Another year has gone by for members of the Active Retirement Group with many more pleasant experiences shared.  Our Tuesday morning meetings are light-hearted get-togethers where we plan, prepare, discuss, have a laugh and of course a cuppa!
On the 20th June we held our annual Summer social which was attended by members of many other Active Retirement Groups.  This was a great evening with plenty of banter and chat and dancing to the music of Paudge Bennett.  We would like to express our gratitude to Mrs Irene McLoughlin who gave us a beautiful picnic hamper for a raffle, the proceeds of which will go towards an outing in September.  Members were also treated to a cruise on the Shannon and visit to Clonmacnois visitor centre by Shannonbridge Action Group as part of the launch of the self-guided tours of the Fortifications in Shannonbridge.  Congratulations to Fr. Frank O’Hanlon on celebrating his Golden Jubilee.  We presented him with a small gift on behalf of the ARA.
“For all that has been, Thanks,
For all that will be, Yes”

Shannonbridge Harvest Festival
The Harvest Festival takes place on Saturday 4th  & Sunday 5th August at Luker’s in conjunction with South Roscommon Vintage Club.  This promises to be an entertaining and enjoyable affair and includes a threshing (weather permitting), tractor build,  country market, vintage display, children's treasure hunt, face painting, children's fishing competition, barbeque, music & craic!  All money raised goes to Portiuncula Children's Ward so come along, enjoy the craic and support a great cause.

 Congratulations!
Congratulations to Fr. Frank O’Hanlon on celebrating his Golden Jubilee.  This is a wonderful achievement of fifty years in the service of God.  The occasion was marked with a special concelebrated mass followed by refreshments in the hall.  Fr. O’Hanlon has spent time in many locations around the country as well as a number of years in Kenya and has been in Clonmacnois parish for the last seventeen years.
Go mbeannaigh Dia do shaol agus do chuid oibre sna blianta atá  le teacht”

Shannonbridge GAA Club
Minor Club Notes
Congratulations to the Naomh Ciaran U14 girls who won the Division 1 Feile final.  Families in the parish hosted two Dublin teams for the event which was held in counties Laois & Offaly.
The U10 blitz on 30th June and U14 blitz on 8th July were a great success.  Tubber won the U14 blitz and were presented with a perpetual trophy by Frank Guinan & Kieran Rohan.
The Cul Camps in Ferbane  and Doon during July had a big contingent of Shannonbridge underage players in attendance.  All had a very enjoyable week of football.
Our U8 team is off to Croke Park on Monday 20th August to take part in the inter county U8 blitz.  They will get to use dressing rooms, run out the tunnel onto the pitch and go up the steps to the presentation stand.  So go along and cheer on our stars of the future on what will be an unforgettable day for them.    Many thanks to all who have sponsored this trip.  The U6, U8, U10 & U12 teams have been invited to a family fun day in Vickerstown GAA club in Co. Laois on September 9th.  All welcome, more details later.
Underage training continues every Monday evening from 7pm to 8pm.  All welcome.

Shannonbridge Golf Society
The outing to Knockanally was unfortunately rained off.  The trip to Tipp brought a win for Eoin Finn at Roscrea Golf Club with a great score of forty five points.  The next outing is the GAA Classic which takes place on August 18th.  Then it’s on to Portumna on September 1st, Westport fro the Captains prize on September 22nd & Portarlington on October 20th.  New members, including beginners very welcome.

Tidy Towns
It’s great to see window boxes and hanging baskets in full bloom and bring an air of Summer to the village despite the inclement weather.  A big ’Thank You’ to the FAS workers who continue to keep the village neat and tidy by keeping grass cut, weeding flower beds and power-washing the bridge railings.  The committee is in talks with Waterways Ireland in relation to the plaza area opposite the Tourist Office and designing it with hard landscaping.  This will give a better view of the river Shannon from the roadside.  We would encourage everyone to keep the village neat and tidy and if you need help to do painting etc contact a member of the committee.  Judging for the Tidy Towns competition has taken place and we are awaiting results. Thanks to all for your continued support and work.

Clonmacnois Youth Festival
This year’s YOUTH 2000 summer festival will take place at Clonmacnois from 9 - 12 August.   This is a four day event for youth aged 16 - 35 years and brings together young people from across the country to grow in faith, form mew friendships and celebrate with music and prayer.  Take part in workshops, dramas, discussion groups, tune in to inspiring speakers or just take time to chill-out and reflect.  If you would like to get involved then why not volunteer your services in the preparations particularly setting up marquees and other facilities for the weekend?  For more information on volunteering contact Sean on 087 8175227.

4. Do one small, concrete thing to create change.

5. Make amends if appropriate.

6. Remember you always have choices.

7. Pray for strength, courage, healing.

8. Share what you’ve learned with others.

9. Don’t give up hope or extinguish it in others.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom)

Q. What do you think of priests who disagree with the Pope? Should they be silenced?

A. As the Lord said, any house divided against itself cannot stand. If members of a football team publicly disagreed with the manager’s tactics they would soon be sidelined. Open debate is one thing but open dissent is another. There are enough critics outside the Church without critics from within tearing it apart.
