Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes

Intermediate Football Championship.

Shannonbridge just came up short on Sunday, at Clara, losing to Durrow by one point. In a low scoring first half, Shannonbridge lost Eddie Egan through injury, replaced by Darragh Corbett. A well worked goal, finished by John Ryan, left the sides level at the break 1-2 to 0-5.

In the ninth minute of the second half, a Durrow goal gave them a two point lead. Four minutes later they were awarded a penalty. A good save from Donal Corbett, resulted in a 45, which was deflected into the net. A goal by Anthony Kelly and a Shane Flannery point brought the gap back to the minimum. Durrow scored their third goal in the twenty first minute. Shannonbridge hit back with a point from a free and a goal by Paul Deeley from the penalty spot, but time ran out leaving Durrow winners by 3-7 to 3-6.

Team: Donal Corbett, S. Flannery (0-1), P. Moloney, M. Darcy, N. Price, P. Egan, W. Keena, J. Ryan (1-0), J. Egan, T. Mahon (0-1), K. Flannery (0-1), P. Kelly, P. Deeley (1-2), E. Egan, K. Kelly. Duck Derby.

The club’s duck race, due to take place on the Shannon last Saturday, was deferred due to weather conditions and the high flood in the river. It will be run as soon as possible; many thanks to all who supported.

Questions people ask

Q. Why are bonfires lit in parts of the country on St John the Baptist’s Eve?

A. Bonfires on this night developed from the mid-summer festival when the sun reaches its highest glory but then begins to wane. That is how John the Baptist understood his mission in preparing the way for Christ. ‘He must grow greater, I must grow less’ (John 3:30). John the Baptist was the light destined to give way to the light of Christ. In a neat piece of counterpointing, the birth of Christ is celebrated just after mid-winters’ day when the sun begins to return. Christ is the light come into the world as a tiny baby destined to grow. I remember an old lady who used to bless our bonfire on this night with the plant known as St John’s Wort.
