TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled’ St. Bernard of Clairvaux is quoted as saying that the three greatest virtues in life are humility, humility, humility. The word humility comes from the Latin word ‘humus’, meaning earth. To be humble, then is to be grounded, earthed. Humility is not weakness. It is the surest sign of strength. It is the key to wonder. It means accepting with joy the wonder of my being, while acknowledging that all I have comes from God. It is about developing a healthy estimate of myself as He sees me. The opposite of humility is pride. Pride is about my glory; humility is about God’s glory. Pride is concerned with who is right; humility is concerned with what is right. Pride makes us artificial; humility makes us real (Thomas Merton). It’s not thinking less of myself; it’s thinking of myself less. It’s not about denying my strengths; it’s being honest about my weaknesses. We actually come nearest to the great when we are great in humility. St. Clare of Assisi got the balance right when she was heard to pray on her deathbed: ‘thank you God for having created me’.

A walk through the Mass (week 3)

Penitential Rite, Gloria. All the other ritual acts of this part of the mass are intended to gather us together into a worshipping assembly. Sometimes we are asked to pause and recall our common need for salvation (the Penitential Rite). Sometimes the hymn “Glory to God in the Highest” is sung or recited at this point. The “Gloria” has been a part of the mass since about the sixth century! These longer hymns and responses are found in the newsletter. Opening Prayer. At the close of this first part of the mass the priest will ask us to join our minds in prayer, and after a few moments of silence he will collect our intentions into one prayers to which we all respond ”Amen,” a Hebrew word for “So be it.” After the readings we move to the table of the altar. As at a meal in the home of a friend, we: 1. set the table 2. Say grace 3. Share the food (we eat and drink)

At mass these ritual actions are called: 1. The preparation of the gifts 2. The Eucharistic Prayer 3. The Communion Rite

 First Day of School

I wonder what you’re doing now And if everyone is treating you kind, I hope there is a special person, A nice friend that you can find. I wonder if the teacher knows How special you are to me And if the brightness of your heart Is something the teacher can see? I wonder if you think of me And if you need a hug. I already miss the sound of your voice And when you give my leg a tug. I wonder if you understand My joy at seeing you grow, And on this day, know my heart breaks. As out in the world, I’m letting you go!

Schools re-open this week. Good luck to all students in our parish schools as they return this week! We wish every blessing on children beginning school for the very first time.

Exam Results On Friday next our students who did their Leaving Cert in June will receive their results. God our Father May your presence be felt as our young people receive their exam results this week. May they know their work and value is not based on academic achievement but on your great love for us. Help them to trust in your goodness, Fix their eyes firmly on you and guide their steps along the path before them. Amen

We wish all Leaving Certificate students every best wish as the results are made known this week. We wish them every blessing as they embark on the next stage of their lives. Remember your exam results do not define you as a person and /or predict your future. Laura Henry

The Season of Creation: 1 st Sept. – 4th Oct. 2022.

Theme ‘Listen to the Voice of Creation’. Pope Francis established 1st September as an annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation - (Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi) and celebrates the joy of creation as well as encouraging awareness raising initiatives to protect the natural environment. In this Season of Creation, this symbol of God's Spirit calls us to listen to the voice of creation, to the voices of those who suffer the impacts of climate change, to the voices of those who hold generational wisdom about how to live gratefully within the limits of the land. These are voices of the Earth. The global Christian family is called to awaken to the urgent need to heal our relationships with creation and with each other and to encourage our parish communities to do the same, "for we know that things can change!" (Laudato Si', 13).

LAUNCH OF SYNTHESIS OF the Consultation in Ireland for the Diocesan Stage of the Universal Synod  2021-2023.  Click on www.synod.ie
The strong sense of shared responsibility that has guided our synodal process so far, from the local to the national level, has been a great encouragement. It is hoped that this will continue to motivate us to develop our skills of deep listening and discernment, as we reflect on the significance of our national synthesis, and the different voices of the church around the world, asking what God wants of us in light of what we have heard.” Dr. Nicola Brady (Chair of steering committee)

TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘Try your best to enter by the narrow door’
The striking image of the ‘narrow door’ in today’s Gospel conjures up the scene on any given match day at venues around the country as supporters queue to enter the stadium. While great throngs approach the gates, each person enters the turnstile alone, provided the ticket is valid. At the end of life’s journey we enter the ‘narrow door’ alone in order to reach the heavenly kingdom. We don’t hold someone else by the hand. To ensure that our ticket is valid we should prepare for the fateful moment without despair or presumption. Entry to the celestial banquet is neither easy nor automatic. It entails living by the wisdom of the Gospel; listening to the word of God and keeping it. That means taking the road less travelled, but the prize is worth the effort. It is wise to prepare for death then. By doing so we actually clarify our life. The word departure literally means to pull up anchor and set sail. Consequently, everything that happens prior to death is preparation for the final voyage. This parable is a wake-up call, a reminder that our actions have consequences. Can you think of anything more painful than to arrive at the heavenly stadium, and have to listen to the celebrations within while being forced to remain outside? ‘In the end if we don’t have God we don’t have anything other than an end’.

 Prayer of Thanksgiving.
God of all blessings, source of all life, giver of all grace: We thank you for the gift of life. for the breath that sustains life, for the food of this earth that nurtures life, We thank you for our families who mind and care for us. for friends who love us by choice, we thank you for the mystery of creation: for the beauty that the eye can see, for the joy that the ear may hear, for companions at work, who share our burdens and daily tasks, for strangers who welcome us into their midst, for people from other lands who call us to grow in understanding, for children who lighten our moments with delight, for the unborn, who offer us hope for the future. We thank you for this day: for life and one more day to love, for opportunity and one more day to work for justice and peace, for neighbours and one more person to love and by whom be loved, for Your grace and one more experience of your presence, for Your promise to be with us, to be our God, and to give salvation. For these, and all blessings, we give you thanks, eternal, loving God, through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
A Walk Through the Mass (2)
Greeting: The mass is a series of movements or moments with nourishment for the people from the table of the Word and the table of the Altar. Ideally, the priest begins the mass from the chair and invites us to begin with the sign of the cross, reminding us of Baptism, and this is followed by the greeting “ the Lord be with you.” You will hear this greeting frequently. It means many things. Like ”good day” it can mean both “hello” and “good bye”. It is both a wish (may the Lord be with you / Día Dhuit) and a profound statement of faith (as you assemble for worship, the Lord is with you ). It is an ancient biblical greeting: Boaz retuned from Bethlehem (we read in the book of Ruth 2:4) and said to the reapers, “The Lord be with you!” The ritual response to this greeting is always the formula, “And with your spirit,” by which we return the hello, the good wishes, the statement of faith.
