A Prayer in Spring
Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day; And give us not to think so far away As the uncertain harvest; keep us here All simply in the springing of the year.
Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white, Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night; And make us happy in the happy bees, The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.
 And make us happy in the darting bird That suddenly above the bees is heard, The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill, And off a blossom in mid air stands still.
For this is love and nothing else is love, The which it is reserved for God above To sanctify to what far ends He will, But which it only needs that we fulfil  (Robert Frost)

Catholic Schools’ Week takes place this year from January 29th-February 4th. Catholic Schools’ Week is an annual all-Ireland celebration which invites schools to give expression in an exceptional way to the ethos of Catholic Education. It acknowledges the tremendous contribution that our Catholic primary and post-primary schools make, not just to Irish society, but to the mission of the Church. This year's theme ‘Catholic schools: Learning with Pope Francis to care for our common home’ has been informed by Laudato Si’, the 2015 encyclical by Pope Francis on care for our common home. We invite you to share this opportunity with our young people by asking them what they have been learning in school and showing an interest in the themes of the week.

CHURCH UNITY WEEK: Church Unity Week this year is celebrated from 18-25 January. At a local level, we had our Joint Ecumenical Carol Service in December at Teampall Conor, Clonmacnois on Dec 11th. This is a very special year for Church Unity. 500 years ago this year (1517) Fr Martin Luther OSA began his Reforming campaign. 2017 theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has been selected with this in mind. The theme: “Reconciliation – The Love of Christ Compels Us” (2 Corinthians 5:14-20) has been chosen. The materials for the 2017 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has two stresses:: reflection upon the main concerns of the churches marked by Martin Luther’s Reformation and secondly recognizing the pain of the subsequent deep divisions which afflicted the unity of the Church. In selecting this theme, it is viewed as an opportunity to take steps toward reconciliation
World Day of Migrants & Refugees
For over a hundred years the third Sunday of January is devoted to the plight of Migrants and Refugees worldwide. In his pastoral letter for this special Sunday Pope Francis chose the theme ‘Minor Migrants, Vulnerable and Voiceless.’ The Pope is very concerned as we all are about hardship suffered due to wars, persecution and natural disasters. Millions of people - including women, men and children - have to leave their native countries to seek refuge elsewhere. Let us welcome those who seek refuge in Ireland. A trait associated with Irish people is to always welcome the stranger. We can recite this prayer for them:
Lord, be present to migrants and all those dispossessed. Be present to those who cannot be with their own people. Be present to those who long to see even one friendly face. Be among those who yearn for a warm greeting. Help us to reach out to your people to create a just world for all. Amen.

Air of AULD LANG SYNE (L.M.)
1. An-oth-er year of set-ting suns, of stars by night re-vealed, of spring-ing grass, of ten-der buds by win-ter's snow con-cealed.
2. An-oth-er year of sum-mer's glow,  of au-tumn's gold and brown, of wav-ing fields, and rud-dy fruit the bran-ches weigh-ing down.
3. An-oth-er year of hap-py work, that bet-ter is than play, of sim-ple cares, and love that grows more sweet from day to day.
4. An-oth-er year to fol-low hard, where bet-ter souls have trod, an-oth-er year of life's de-light, an-oth-er year of God.

BLESSING THE HOME AT EPIPHANY TIME  There is a lovely  family custom in some countries of blessing homes  with blessed chalk. I’ll leave some in the Churches for Jan 5th vigil  (8p.m.) & Jan 6th @ 10:30a.m. Calling on the 3 Magi (Wise Men) Caspar [C], Melchior (M), and Balthasar (B)  Take (blessed) chalk (of any colour) and mark on the lintel of your front door to look like this 20 + C + M + B + 17 saying:
“The three Wise Men, C Caspar,  M Melchior,  B and Balthasar followed the star of God’s Son who became human  20 two thousand 17 and seventeen years ago. ++ May Christ bless our home  ++ and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen”
A Prayer as the year turns…
To you Lord Jesus, I open the door of my heart; I begin again,  Ready for a better year
I make a new start; I begin again.

Ready to live life anew,
I leave my past to your mercy;
I begin again.

Ready for each new day
I leave my present to your car;
I begin again. Ready for life’s challenges I leave my past to your providence;  With your help I begin again. Amen.
