CHURCH UNITY WEEK: Church Unity Week this year is celebrated from 18-25 January. At a local level, we had our Joint Ecumenical Carol Service in December at Teampall Conor, Clonmacnois on Dec 11th. This is a very special year for Church Unity. 500 years ago this year (1517) Fr Martin Luther OSA began his Reforming campaign. 2017 theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has been selected with this in mind. The theme: “Reconciliation – The Love of Christ Compels Us” (2 Corinthians 5:14-20) has been chosen. The materials for the 2017 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has two stresses:: reflection upon the main concerns of the churches marked by Martin Luther’s Reformation and secondly recognizing the pain of the subsequent deep divisions which afflicted the unity of the Church. In selecting this theme, it is viewed as an opportunity to take steps toward reconciliation
World Day of Migrants & Refugees
For over a hundred years the third Sunday of January is devoted to the plight of Migrants and Refugees worldwide. In his pastoral letter for this special Sunday Pope Francis chose the theme ‘Minor Migrants, Vulnerable and Voiceless.’ The Pope is very concerned as we all are about hardship suffered due to wars, persecution and natural disasters. Millions of people - including women, men and children - have to leave their native countries to seek refuge elsewhere. Let us welcome those who seek refuge in Ireland. A trait associated with Irish people is to always welcome the stranger. We can recite this prayer for them:
Lord, be present to migrants and all those dispossessed. Be present to those who cannot be with their own people. Be present to those who long to see even one friendly face. Be among those who yearn for a warm greeting. Help us to reach out to your people to create a just world for all. Amen.
