 20th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
Jesus says in today’s Gospel that He came to bring division. It seems like a contradiction that the Prince of Peace came to bring division. But real peace is based on truth, and if I speak the truth it will at times cause division. The prophets stood for truth, and they were martyred. It has been said that all truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as self-evident. We must be brave, then. We must have the courage to stand against the crowd at times. We should never worry about who will be offended if we speak the truth; we should worry, rather about who will be misled and damaged if we don’t. Pope Benedict reminded us that whenever we find ourselves on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. Truth cannot be determined by majority vote. ‘The one who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his/her back on the crowd’.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Give praise to the Father Almighty, To His Son, Jesus Christ the Lord, To the Spirit who lives in our hearts, both now and forever. Amen. Our Lady of Knock, Queen of Ireland, you gave hope to your people in a time of distress, and comforted them in sorrow. You have inspired countless pilgrims to pray with confidence to your divine Son, remembering His promise, “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find.” Help me to remember that we are all pilgrims on the road to heaven. Fill me with love and concern for my brothers and sisters in Christ, especially those who live with me. Comfort me when I am sick, lonely or depressed. Teach me how to take part ever more reverently in the Holy Mass. Give me a greater love of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Pray for me now, and at the hour of my death. Amen. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world; Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world; Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world; Grant us peace. ST. JOSEPH, Chosen by God to be The Husband of Mary, The Protector of the Holy Family, The Guardian of the Church. Protect all families In their work and recreation And Guard us on our journey through life. (Repeat – Lamb of God, etc.) ST. JOHN, Beloved Disciple of the Lord, Faithful priest. Teacher of the Word of God. Help us to hunger for the Word. To be loyal to the Mass And to love one another. (Repeat – Lamb of God, etc.)

A Harvest Prayer
On the day of the harvest
the straw is set aside,
 The chaff is blown
 away by the wind,
And the weeds are consigned
to the flames.
But the wheat, like sacks of gold,
is gathered into the barn.
Lord, on the day of death,
The harvest of my life will be poured out before you, Wheat & chaff & weeds together. Let your wise hand sift through it; Then keep what is worth keeping, And with the breath of your kindness, blow the rest away.
A Parent’s Dream Our Father who art in Heaven, I am a parent on earth. You have given me this gift and responsibility Grant me the wisdom to carry it out. Let my parenthood be one of encouragement and support, not of expectations and control. Let me protect my children, but not too much. Advise them but just a little. Let me respect them as individuals, not as extensions of myself. Let me be honest about my feelings towards them, including my anger, disappointment, hurt, excitement, joy and love. Let me be firm without dominating them. Let me be sensitive to their feelings, without trying to change them. Let me be there for them when they need me And get out of their way when they don’t. Let me offer them the roots of belonging And the wings of freedom.     September Blessing of School/College Bags

 21st SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
The striking image of the ‘narrow door’ in today’s Gospel conjures up the scene on any given match day at Croke Park as supporters queue to enter the stadium. While great throngs approach the gates, each person enters the turnstile alone, provided the ticket is valid. At the end of life’s journey we enter the ‘narrow door’ alone in order to reach the heavenly kingdom. We don’t hold someone else by the hand. To ensure that our ticket is valid we prepare for the fateful moment without despair or presumption. Entry to the celestial banquet is neither easy nor automatic. It entails hearing the word of God and keeping it. That means taking the road less travelled, which is rarely the easiest one. The prize is worth the effort. This parable is a wake-up call; a reminder that our actions have consequences. Can you think of anything more painful than to arrive at the heavenly stadium, and have to listen to the celebrations within while being forced to remain outside? ‘In the end if we don’t have God we don’t have anything other than an end’.
