13th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘They were overcome with astonishment’

The English word miracle derives from an Indo-European word ‘smeiros’ meaning ‘to smile’. The Gospels record thirty-seven miracles performed by Jesus. Each miracle story reminds us that His presence always makes a difference. When He is invited into a situation, no matter how desperate, things change for the better. In today’s Gospel extract, we hear of the raising from the dead of the daughter of Jairus and the healing of the woman who suffered from a long-term haemorrhage. In each case the encounter is personal. In each case a request for healing is made. Jairus, a synagogue official, a man of substance in the community makes the request publicly on behalf of his daughter. The unnamed woman, a person of humble standing, makes her own request privately. Both Jairus and the woman have expectant faith in the Lord and their faith is rewarded. Jesus does not disappoint those who seek His assistance. Neither does He discriminate between the famous and the not so famous. With touch, He healed their bodies. With words, He healed their spirits. With love, He healed their hearts. It is interesting to note that the healing of the woman occurred as Jesus made His way to the home of Jairus. The Master was not annoyed at being side-tracked, because He understood that sometimes what happens on the journey can be as important as what happens when we reach our destination! Many people smiled that day!

TUESDAY 29th JUNE  - Feast of SS. Peter & Paul We can learn from Peter and Paul’s lives. Paul converted from being a brutal persecutor to a fearless preacher through the grace of Christ. Peter learned that his denials are restored by love. Both men show us by their lives that recovery from their mistakes and openness to God’s love gave them courage to bear witness to their faith. We all have shaky egos that are vulnerable to shame. But each of us, Like Peter and Paul are also called by name for God’s kind purpose and plan.

JULY 1st Prayer to St. Oliver Plunkett Glorious Martyr, Oliver, who willingly gave your life for your faith, help us also to be strong in faith. May we be loyal like you to the See of Peter. By your intercession and example may all hatred and bitterness be banished from the hearts of Irish men and women. May the peace of Christ reign in our hearts, as it did in your heart, even at the moment of your death. Pray for us and for Ireland. Amen. The shrine of St. Oliver Plunkett is in St. Peter's Church, Drogheda, Co. Louth

CLONMACNOIS CEMETERY

Currently 200 can attend outdoors. For Banagher&  Killourney recently, Kilrehan (July 4th) , High St (July 11th) Masses will be celebrated in the Church and blessing privately. It may be possible for us later in the Autumn to gather. I certainly hope to do so. However, we would like to encourage and commend you in keeping your  loved ones graves and to try and  keep our cemetery as clean and tidy as possible. A “neighbourly eye” over graves of people who don’t have relatives to tend to the plot would be great.  Please don’t discard old plants, flowers or containers in adjacent fields or at the walls/trees/shrubs. Bring a bag and bring them home.  I routinely get complaints in this regard. In Zambia the locals had a saying “little by little we make a heap.”… I’m afraid it’s true of refuse as well!

JULY—REEK MONTH PILGRIMAGE ON CROAGH PATRICK The annual Reek Sunday Pilgrimage on Croagh Patrick will be going ahead this year albeit in a much extended format from Wednesday to Saturday, 1st - 31st July. The Masses (Wednesday – Saturday) will be limited to the numbers permitted for outdoor gatherings at that particular time, which currently apply to 100 people up to 4th July and 200 people from 5th July. Details on www.westportparish.ie and on signage in the carpark at the start of the ascent. Pilgrims are asked to plan their trip to Croagh Patrick as early as possible and keep in mind that mid-week is traditionally a quieter time to climb.

LOUGH DERG  2021 Registration is now open to “Do Lough Derg from wherever you are” from 3rd to 5th July. The Prior, Fr La Flynn, will do the Three Day Pilgrimage on the Island during these days. To offer a live link by webcam in support of those who will choose to do the pilgrimage wherever they are, some of the Lough Derg staff will do the pilgrimage in St. Mary’s Church in Pettigo. To register or for further information please email info@loughderg.org, phone 071-9861518. www.loughderg.org

CREDO CATECHISM COURSE: Want to learn more about the Catholic faith? Then you are welcome to join us for ‘Credo’ - a free, online course of instruction presented by the association of the faithful, Companions of the Gospel. Our next meeting takes place on Thursday 1st July @ 8pm on Zoom (Meeting ID: 841 7305 8292; Passcode: 8882021) and will examine: ‘The Ways of Coming to Know God’ (CCC 31-35).

Blessed Redeemer, Saints Peter and Paul were leaders and models in strengthening the faith of the infant Church, and I ask them to pray for my faith to grow strong. Saint Paul wrote in his second letter to Saint Timothy, "I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have. I ask Saints Peter and Paul to pray for me to grow into spiritual maturity. Help me, O Lord, to increase in faith and trust. Where Your presence is but a spark in me, fan it into a flame that brightens other people's lives. Saints Peter and Paul, pray for me. Amen

This week we begin the School Holidays. Exams are over for our young people and now they can relax now after a very difficult year. Our Sixth Class Group (Michael Carty, Rian Claffey, Niamh Curley, Aoife Flannery, Grace Fallon, Alex Heavin, Shane Kelly, Sean O Shea, Luke O’Duffy, Harry O’Duffy) said farewell to their days of Primary School. Our school staff can close the doors of their classroom , remove their face masks , with a sigh of relief that this year, so difficult with so many restrictions have come to an end; and a prayer of heartfelt thanks that all the children are safe and well and growing up in every way. Again I want to again thank  you the School Community of Parents, Children and School Board for all your cooperation, understanding and support this past difficult year. To you our staff in Clonmacnois Primary School  I thank you for all the sacrifices that you have had to Make to keep our children, our community, and your own families safe. I hope we will always remember this last school year, not with sadness and regret, but with pride and thanksgiving that so many people made so many sacrifices to keep others safe and to support the work of our Frontline Workers. Together all of you helped to “to save lives”. All of you can take a well earned bow, but more importantly now a well earned break, rest and well deserved holiday. May you continue to be safe, well and ready and renewed for school in September.

12th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
“The wind and the sea obey Him’.
The Gospel of Mark was written around the year 70 AD for the Church in Rome, which had experienced the persecution of Nero, during which great leaders like Peter and Paul were lost. Fear and uncertainty were in the air. There was a feeling abroad that the Lord had abandoned His people. Reassurance was needed. The parable of the calming of the storm would have provided that reassurance to the faithful in those turbulent times. As it was in the beginning, so it is today. Our Church has had to navigate exceedingly stormy waters in recent decades. Even Pope Benedict admitted, on the occasion of his resignation, that there were moments during his papacy ‘when the seas were rough and the wind blew against us and it seemed that the Lord was sleeping’. Whether as Church or as individuals we must never forget who is on board our ship. Sometimes He calms the storm; at other times, He calms the sailor. He never abandons His people
PRAYER FOR EXAMINATION TIME - God of Wisdom: Guide me as I choose questions and in the way I answer them. God of Peace: Keep me calm so that I will do the best I can. God of Understanding: help me put all of this into perspective. I ask these prayers in the name of Jesus, friend of students, Amen. Wishing all our examination students every blessing in the days ahead.
YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH (December 8th 2020 - December 8th 2021) Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to you God entrusted his only Son, in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen. St. Joseph, pray for us.
ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION  My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

FEAST OF ST. THOMAS MORE Thomas wrote a letter to his daughter, Margaret on the night before he was executed. It showed his tender love for his family and his complete peace with his impending death as “he longed to go to God” on the following day. In one evocative line in the long letter he writes “farewell my child and pray for me and I shall for you and for all your friends that we may merrily meet in heaven”.  St. Thomas More is the patron saint of politicians, lawyers and public servants.

FATHER’S DAY PRAYER
Lord, thank you for all fathers. For the new ones, who endure sleepless nights with infants in arms. For the busy ones, who juggle the pressures of home and family life. For the steadfast ones, who nurture and care for our special vulnerable children. For the patient ones, who always seek to forgive and engage with their pre-teens. For the persistent ones, who cleverly find new ways to connect with their mini-adults. For the father uncles, who step in to cradle and care for nieces and nephews. For all granddads, who love and support their precious grandchildren. For the foster dads that are called to gather and cover the fragile ones. For the Sunday dads who care for our children and lead them in faith. For the dads who give far beyond their own resources, who overcome disability to cherish and love. Thank you Lord for all our beautiful fathers. Help us to support them and keep them in our prayers. May you bless them now on this their special day. Amen.

THE SUNDAY GOSPEL
has this beautiful word “Calm”. It is one of my favourite words. The phrase Jesus uses to still the storm “Quiet now, be calm”. This could be a mantra prayer for us every day, but especially in times of anxiety, fear, uncertainty and pandemic. “Quiet now, be calm” Jesus speaks to our troubled and our anxious minds always. We thank God today for those people who carried that calmness in their voices, in their faces, in their touch and in their smile for us always, reminding us that all will be well.
Calm the Soul
When my boat, Lord, is storm tossed & sinking
When fears in my head take control,
Say “Be not afraid” to my spirit
And your answer will calm the soul.

When I flounder around in deep waters,       When the stresses of life take their toll,
A sudden deep hush steals upon me,
Your gentleness calms the soul.

When my life seems full of confusion
And I have lost sight of the goal
As I stumble about in the darkness
May Your gentle light calm the soul.
PRAYING THROUGH THE STORMS OF LIFE   Rebecca Ruiz Remember me, oh God, during this time. The winds are strong and the waters rising. There is no light to see by,& I’m having a hard time finding my bearings. I trust that you’ve got me now even though I’m so afraid, & frankly, I just don’t feel your presence, and I really wonder where you are in all of this. I remember, though, all of the times you have blessed me. I recall all of the miracles—big and small—that you have worked for me. You really have given me so much. Help me to recognize your Divine presence, In small blessings& miracles you work for me every day & give me patience as I wait to see again your light.

11th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed’
On December 1st 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parkes, a forty-two year old African American working woman refused to vacate her seat on a city bus when ordered to do so by the driver so that a white man could be accommodated. Rosa was arrested. Meetings were called. Martin Luther King emerged. The Civil Rights movement took root. Public transport was boycotted. The Supreme Court of the United States declared Alabama’s segregation laws to be unconstitutional and so ‘a forest fire began with a spark’. No word or deed is insignificant in the hands of God. Mustard seeds grow into trees. Small seeds are growing quietly in our Church. Let us take notice and take heart. We must never be daunted by small beginnings. Great acts take time. We could well adopt the words of encouragement offered by St. Francis Xavier to his followers: ‘Be big in little things’
Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen. St. Joseph, pray for us.

A THOUGHT “ On this summer morning, let us look again at the lives
we have been so generously given and let us let fall away the useless baggage that we carry -- old pains, old habits, old ways of  seeing and feeling -- and let us have the courage to begin again.  Life is very short, and we are no sooner here than it is time to  depart again, and we should use to the full the time that we still  have. We don't realize all the good we can do. A kind, encouraging word or helping hand can bring many a person through dark  valleys in their lives. We weren't put here to make money or to  acquire status or reputation. We were sent here to search for the  light of God in our hearts, and when we find it we are meant to  give it away generously. The dawn that is rising this summer  morning is a gift to our hearts and we are meant to celebrate it  and to carry away from this holy, ancient place the gifts of healing and light and the courage of a new beginning."  (paraphrased from the late John O’Donoghue)

RECENT DEATHS   Please pray for the repose of the souls of Willie Kieran (Bill) Dolan, Blanchardstown, Dublin . 15, (late of Clonlyon, Belmont– brother of Jim Dolan, Clonlyon). Rest in peace.
BAPTISM  We welcome into the Christian Community Rachel Sabina Nugent, who was baptised in St. Ciaran’s Church, Shannonbridge last weekend.
LOUGH DERG 2021 - Lough Derg regrets that it will not be possible in 2021 to reopen Station Island for the Traditional Three-Day Pilgrimage or even for the autumn programme of Day Retreats. Lough Derg will again offer the opportunity to “Do Lough Derg from wherever you are” on 3rd – 5th July. The outdoor Pilgrimage on the Lough Shore Pilgrim Path will also be available as the summer goes on. Further information, from Lough Derg office 071 9861518 or www.loughderg.org

I Have Learned
-I’ve learned that no matter how thin you slice it, there are always two sides.
-I’ve learned that sometimes when I’m angry I have a right to be angry, but it doesn’t give me the right to be cruel.
-I’ve learned that you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life. -I’ve learned that no matter how much I care, some people don’t care back.
-I’ve learned that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it.
-I’ve learned that learning to forgive, takes practice.
-I’ve learned that it isn’t always enough to be forgiven by others, sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.
-I’ve learned that no matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.
-I’ve learned that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief.
-I’ve learned that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon.

ST. ANTHONY– a man of the Gospel
On 12th September, 1985 Pope John Paul II visited the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua. On that occasion, he said: ‘Let me draw your attention straight away to that special quality which crops up repeatedly in the recorded events of this saint’s life and which set him apart with limitless Christian holiness, throughout his whole life, Anthony, ‘a man of the Gospel’. In all Franciscan Churches throughout the world on this Sunday 13th June St. Anthony will be honoured on his feast day. Seven hundred and ninety years ago on this day, Anthony died at the age of thirty-six years. For almost eight hundred years now people have been seeking his i n t e r c e s s i o n , t o m a k e representation on their behalf with God! Anthony is known as the saint who finds things for us. All of us have lost something. I think of the many people who have lost A) Hard earned money because of the financial recklessness of the few. B) Their homes C) Jobs with little hope and prospect for further employment. D) Parents who have lost a child in death through sickness, accidents or drugs. E) I think of people who are lost, who have taken a wrong road as a result of greed, reckless behaviour or sheer indifference. F) Those who have left the Church because of an issue or hurt by the Church and who now feel lost and are looking for a w a y b a c k . It is far easier to find a lost article than heal a lost or wounded person. Anthony’s life and mission was to bring the message of Jesus to those who were lost, especially those seeking Jesus. Popular devotion has nominated him as the finder of lost objects. Anthony found himself by losing himself totally to the providence of God.
