FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

'Vulnerable for Love'

...he was hungry. The devil said to him...

- Luke 4:2-3

On a retreat for young people I helped direct, the youth reflected on self-care. They knew loving your neighbour and loving yourself go together and are part of loving God. We asked them what they need to look after themselves and each other. They noted, wisely, that when they are hungry or thirsty, they're vulnerable, and then it's harder to be good to others.

Yet the Church asks us, entering Lent, to embrace (in some fashion) hunger and thirst through fasting. It asks us to become vulnerable. Jesus spent 40 days in the desert, in physical and spiritual hunger and real temptation. So will we, even if not literally in the desert.

Whichever form of fasting and vulnerability we take up this Lent, let's do it out of love. We need God's protection when we enter the Lenten desert. The Church doesn't ask us to go alone (as Jesus did). It urges us to go together. This is where Jesus is--with us.

Be with us, Lord, in our vulnerability

The Season of Lent  Facts about Lent ·  Lent is a time when Christian people get ready for Easter. ·  Lent is a sacred time  within the Church Calendar. It is a time of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. ·  Lent lasts for forty days, reminding us of the forty days that Jesus spent in the desert doing penance and fasting. It begins on Ash Wednesday 2nd March and finishes at Sunset on Holy Thursday. We don’t count Sundays in the forty days because Sundays are days of celebration in the Church Calendar. ·  Purple vestments are worn by the Priests and Deacon during Lent. ·  Lent comes from the word “Lente” which means springtime. ·  Many people promise to do something during Lent to help them to be more like Jesus. Sometimes they give up something they like, they fast. Other people promise to do something like being kinder, going to mass, saying prayers or put money in the Trócaire Box to remind them to help others who are not as lucky as they are. ·  What we do during Lent helps us to get ready for Easter.

THE DIOCESAN ASSEMBLY  There will be a meeting of Parish representatives of the Diocesan Assembly on Wednesday 9th March at 7.30 pm by Zoom. At that meeting will be discussed

(a) Youth, family and Lay Formation.

(b) The limited resources available to the Diocese.

(c) The fact that this is a synodal journey where, as church, we all walk the road to-gether into the future. The next meeting will be on Saturday April 2nd (in person) in St. Mel’s College (and Zoom for anyone worried about a large gathering) and the assembly event, May 14th and 15th (2 full days). The representatives from  Clonmacnois Parish are Patricia Dillon, Anne Rohan & Dympna Fitzpatrick

A Time of Hope: We continue to prepare and pray for our Diocesan Assemble which takes place the weekend of May 14 & 15. As we prepare for our Diocesan Assembly , the Church throughout the world is preparing for a very important Assembly, called a Synod which takes place in Rome in October 2023. This is a call to listen, to reflect upon, to try to understand, to pray and to respond to how and where the Holy Spirit is calling us as a family of the Church at this time. It is a time to listen to the abuse and hurts of the past so that it will never happen again. It is also a chance for all people of faith all over our world to share their hopes and their dreams of where “The Face of Jesus” can be recognised, welcomed, cared for and loved in our time and in our home place. This is an exciting opportunity of hope and faith that the God of Jesus still leads us with great tenderness as a family of people to a future full of hope and compassion, for us and for all our children and our brothers and sisters of the world

A Prayer for the Synodal Pathway. Lord of all hopefulness, as we embark on this journey together, may we listen and discern and be guided by the Holy Spirit, who constantly breathes new life into our world, our hearts, our families, homes and parishes. May renewal and reform, fresh hope and healing come for all people of God in Ireland. By virtue of our baptism may we each play our part in transforming the Church through a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit which is your gift and promise, upon our land. A Mhuire Mháthair, mother of the Church, guard and guide us on our pilgrim way. Amen

THINKING ABOUT LENTEN PENANCE?  The following are suggested as ways of fulfilling Friday penance during Lent.  Abstaining from meat or some other food.  Visiting the Blessed Sacrament.  Helping the poor, sick, old or lonely. Making the Stations of the Cross. Making a special effort at                involvement in family prayer. Making a special effort to participate in Mass on Fridays. Fasting from all food for a longer period than usual.

It’s not about geography but about a core group of people who harness the wisdom and talent of the Christian community of the Parish of Clonmacnois.
