33rd SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘Your endurance will win you your lives’

Jesus was nothing if not honest with His followers. He did not promise them an easy passage, but He did guarantee them His support on their journey, and, if they persevered, success in the end. Most of those early disciples were to pay the ultimate price for the faith, but they also discovered that the prison cell can be a palace, or the scaffold a throne when the Lord walks by your side. Endurance is the difference between success and failure. A winner in life or in God’s kingdom is just a loser who tried one more time. When reflecting on his career of outstanding achievement, the great inventor Thomas Edison remarked: ‘many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up’. May we never succumb to hopelessness as we endeavour to make sense of ‘life’s weary puzzle’. Through endurance we find out who we are.

 SAINTS DAYS

Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe celebrated on Sun. 20th Nov. We celebrate Christ as a crucified King. Through his cross he has won a holy nation and a royal people. In his Kingdom he has reconciled all things to himself and through himself. He is the true shepherd king who leads his people

World Day of the Poor Today (Nov. 13th)  is World Day of the Poor. Pope Francis announced at the end of the Year of Mercy 2016 that this particular Sunday be devoted to the Poor. The theme given to us by the Pope this year is “For your sakes Christ became poor” Mercy reduces poverty and increases hope. Saint Vincent de Paul said “The poor are our masters. Christ himself is among us”. On this Sunday we can reflect on the Corporal Works of Mercy: To feed the hungry. To give water to the thirsty. To clothe the naked. To shelter the homeless. To visit the sick. To visit the imprisoned. To bury the dead.

On Passing a Graveyard May perpetual light shine upon the faces of all who rest here. May the lives they lived unfold further in spirit. May all their past travails find ease in the kindness of clay. May the remembering earth mind every memory they brought. May the rains from the heavens fall gently upon them. May the wildflowers and grasses whisper their wishes into light. May we reverence the village of presence in the stillness of this silent field. John O’Donohue

World Day of the Poor

Pope Francis has nominated the 33rd Sunday in the Liturgical year as World Day of the Poor. “As long as Lazarus lies at the door of our homes (cf. Luke 16: 19-21) there can be no justice or social peace” - Pope Francis. God of Abraham, On my newsfeed, On my street, Everywhere I go I see Lazarus, But I also see so many doors, Doors that I’ve built, That I’ve closed. Doors that society has hung and locked. Doors that separate me from Larazus, To the poor. To know them as your children, To lift them in their distress, To work to help them find a fair share of your bounty, This World Day of the Poor, Help us all turn to those outside our door, To bless, heal, comfort; And together, from this day forward, build a world, Where the poor are strangers to none, And, indeed, the very chains of poverty are broken. Amen

November

For those who walked with us For those who walked with us, this is a prayer, For those who have gone ahead this is a Blessing, For those who touched and tendered us, who lingered with us while they lived, this is a thanksgiving, For those who journey still with us, in the shadows of awareness, in the crevices of memory, in the landscape of our dreams, this is a benediction. (Ian Richardson)
