SIXTH  SUNDAY OF EASTER

‘I will give you another Advocate’

In his inaugural address in January 1961 President John F Kennedy announced to his fellow citizens that the torch had been passed to a new generation. As Jesus prepared to return to the home of the Father He left the same message with His disciples. It would be their task to continue His work and carry His Word to the ends of the earth. He reassures them, however, that He is not abandoning them. He will send the Spirit whom He describes as the Paraclete. The word Paraclete means advocate or helper, one who stands beside you in time of difficulty, providing a comforting, supportive and encouraging presence. What Jesus is really saying to the disciples in this, His final address is: ‘I am sending you on a difficult and dangerous mission but you will not be alone. I will send you someone who will guide you as to what to do and enable you to do it.” Jesus continues to walk with and guide His Church through the working of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will always point the way for people to finish the work of Jesus but He does not gate-crash any person’s heart. He waits to be welcomed-in and there is only one person who can open the door. If we do open ourselves to His promptings we can, through His power renew the face of the earth. The torch is passed

In the Midst of Plenty' is a new folk musical from Enchanted Croi Theatre touring Ireland and locally Mullingar Arts Centre (May 25th and 26th),  Town Hall Cavan (May 28th) Backstage Theatre, Longford (May 31st) & Roscommon Arts Centre (June 23/24)  The show tells the story of the desperate lengths the starving tenants on the Strokestown estate in Roscommon went to in order to survive the Great Hunger, and their exodus along what is now known as the National Famine Way. Exploring themes of Irish womanhood, family, community, and rebellion, this production peels back the curtain of antiquity surrounding the Great Hunger and presents the reality of this true story in all of its bare, heartfelt authenticity. More information at www.inthemidstofplenty.com or email inthemidstofplenty@gmail.com.  Box office contacts: Mullingar (449347777), Cavan (494380494), Longford (433347888).  Abortion: Changing the Narrative –

a Statement of the Catholic Bishops

Five years on from the May 2018 referendum which removed the constitutional guarantee of the equal right to life of unborn children and their mothers, the Bishops of Ireland have issued a statement which also takes into account the recent review by Government of the abortion legislation introduced following the referendum. At that time the bishops said, “a new situation now exists in Ireland. It is essential for us as a Church, which cares passionately about the gift of life, and wants to support both mothers and their unborn children, to seek better ways of responding to this new and very challenging reality”. Today, bishops reaffirm the deep conviction of our faith, namely, that the dignity of every human life, from conception to natural death, is a value for the whole of society, rooted in reason as well as in faith. No matter what legislation is passed, the fundamental right to life for all human beings at every stage of development still prevails. The bishops remain convinced that the relevant law, the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018 will, in due course, be repealed. In the meantime, the Church will continue to seek loving and supportive protection for every mother and for every child in the womb, including babies diagnosed with a disability or a life-limiting condition. The bishops will continue to do their best to change the narrative through dialogue and by testifying, in season and out of season, to the Gospel of Life. How can People of Faith help? Bring Flowers of the Rarest Bring flowers of the rarest bring blossoms the fairest, from gardens and woodlands and hillside and dale; Our full hearts are swelling, our glad voices telling the praise of the loveliest flower of the vale! Chorus: O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today! Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May (x2)

Their lady they name thee, Their mistress proclaim thee, Ah, grant that thy children on earth be as true as long as the bowers

are radiant with flowers, as long as the azure shall keep its bright hue
