One tiny hand to guide and hold, One tiny life to shape and mould; each child, a gift from God above, a symbol of His strength and love
The Work of Christmas. When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and the princess are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the bridges, To bring peace among brothers and sisters , To make music in the heart. The music of hope and healing and happiness.

EPIPHANY PROCLAMATION
in a time before Calendars, even timepieces were absent, church bells would punctuate the day of work, marking out times of work and rest. Church Holydays were frequent (35 in the 17th Century Ireland) but there was no concept of a five day 35-40 hour week and Church Holydays played a role in relieving people from the drudgery of work.
As part of the every January 6th the Feasts of the Year were marked out in what became known as the Epiphany Proclamation. You don't hear it sung (as it was) or said
Even today it serves a role in placing the centrality of Easter so close to Christmas. Reminding us of WHY the Saviour was born.
"Know, dear brethren, that, as we have rejoiced at
the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. So by leave of
God's mercy we announce to you also the joy of his
Resurrection, who is our Saviour. on the fourteenth
day of February will fall Ash Wednesday, and the
beginning of the most sacred Lenten season. On the
thirty first day of March you will celebrate with
joy Easter Day, the Paschal Feast of our Lord Jesus Christ On the 12th day of May will be the Ascension of
the our Lord Jesus Christ. On the nineteenth day of May the feast of Pentecost. On the second of June, the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. On the first day of December, the First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is honour and glory for ever and ever. "
FOLKLORE COLLECTION—extract from Duchas 1937
St. Ciaran’s Well One day a man was passing by St Ciaran’s well, and he had a terrible pain in his stomack. He said he would go down and get a drink. He went down and took one drink of water and while he was swallowing it he said “In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost”. When he came back to the stile, the pain ceased and after that he never had a pain in his stomack again.

A part of church history is the custom of blessing homes at the New Year. A family would hold a short service of prayer to ask God’s blessing on their dwellings and on all who live, work with and visit them. In this way, we invite Jesus to be a “guest” in our home, a listener to each conversation, a guide for troubled times, and a blessing in times of thanksgiving.
YOU NEED.... CHALK
Firstly Bless the Chalk
Loving God, bless this chalk which you have created, that it may be helpful to your people; and grant that through the invocation of your most Holy Name all those who with it write the names of your saints, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, may receive health of body and protection of soul for all who dwell in the homes where this chalk is used, we make this prayer through Jesus the Christ. Amen.
THEN ...mark on the lintel of a door (normally exterior) 20 + C + M + B + 24 saying:
The three Wise Men,
C Caspar,
M Melchior,
B and Balthasar followed the star of God’s Son who became human
20 two thousand
24 and twenty-four years ago.
++ May Christ bless our home
++ and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen.
A Family Prayer for the New Year
Dear God, we thank you for the gift of a New Year. We pray that you will guide us and bless us throughout this year. We ask that you help us to grow in faith, hope, and love. May we be alight to others and share your love with those around us. We pray for peace in our homes, our communities, and our world. May we be instruments of your peace and work towards justice and reconciliation. We pray for those who are suffering, that they may find comfort and
healing. We pray for those who are lost, that they may find their way. Keep our family in your care today, tonight and always. Amen
May your year be filled with peace, prosperity, and love. May God's blessings shower upon you and bestow upon each of you a bright, healthy, and peaceful New Year.
