CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

Sunday 31st, is the Feast of St. John Bosco, 1815-1888, born in Italy, he founded the Salesians to educate boys for life and was involved in publishing catechetical material for youth.  Patron Saint of young people and Catholic publishers.
Monday, 1st February, is the Feast of St. Brigid, 454-524.  She received the religious veil from St. Mel at Ardagh and founded her monastery at Kildare with the help of St. Conleth.  St. Brigid is Patroness of Ireland.

Tuesday 2nd, is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, Candlemas Day.  Candles will be blessed at the beginning of Mass at 10.00 a.m. and 7.30 p.m.  Those who wish to have candles blessed may leave them in the sanctuary.

Wednesday 3rd, is the Feast of St. Blaise who suffered martyrdom in Armenia in 315.  The Blessing of Throats, associated with the feast, will be given after Mass at 10.00 a.m.

Wednesday 3rd is also the Feast of St. Ansgar, born in France, Bishop of Hamburg, died 865.

Friday 5th, St. Agatha who was martyred in Sicily in the third century.

Saturday 6th, the Japanese Martyrs, St. Paul Miki and Companions who were martyred at Nagasaki, 1597.

Sunday next, 7th, is the Feast of St. Mel, Founder and First Bishop of Ardagh.  Patron of the Diocese.  Legend has it that he was nephew of St. Patrick whom he accompanied or followed to Ireland.  He died in 488.

Friday is the First Friday of February.  The Holy Communion calls to the sick and housebound will be made in Friday.

The Year of Consecrated Life concludes on Tuesday, 2nd February, Feast of the Presentation of the Lord,  Candlemas Day.  We give thanks for all those who have made commitments to the consecrated life and we pray that many will respond to that calling.

Readers’ Missals.  The St. Paul Sunday Missal contains the liturgical texts for Sundays and Holydays.  Readers may collect copies from the sacristy.

Pioneers who are eligible for Silver or Gold emblems (pins) are asked to contact Fr. Brady immediately – likewise, young people who wish to advance to the next stage of membership.  Emblems and diplomas will be presented on Sunday next, 7th February, Temperance Sunday.

Catholic Schools Week runs from this Sunday, 31st January, to Saturday, 6th February.  The theme chosen is:  “Catholic Schools: Challenged to Proclaim God’s Mercy”, reflecting the Year of Mercy which commenced on 8th December, 2015.

Shannonbridge Active Retirement Association resumes its meetings/activities on Tuesday 23rd February, at 10.30 a.m., in the Parish Hall.  The €15.00 Affiliation Fee for 2016 is now due.

The Shrove Dues may be handed in next weekend, please.  The proceeds of the Dues Collections are lodged to a central fund from which each priest receives €1,700.00 per month or €20,400.00 per annum, gross.  (Insurances, health and motor, are paid by the parish.)  In 2015 the Parish of Clonmacnois contributed €17,259.00 to the clergy income fund, a shortfall in excess of €3,000.00.  This was made up by parishes which contribute a surplus.
Once again we acknowledge and thank those parishioners who do contribute and give generously to the various collections.  They play their part in ensuring that church and priest and parish facilities are available to all.

Sunday 24th is the Feast of St. Francis de Sales, 1567-1622, bishop of Geneva, founder of the Visitation Sisters, patron of journalists.
Monday 25th, The Conversion of St. Paul - on the road to Damascus.  He spent the remainder of his life preaching to the non-Jewish world.
Tuesday 26th, Sts. Timothy and Titus, disciples of St. Paul and later his co-workers, to whom he wrote letters which are included in the New Testament.
Wednesday 27th, St. Angela Merici, 1474-1540, founder of the Ursulines, she devoted herself to Christian Education.
Thursday 28th, St. Thomas Aquinas, born in Italy, 1225. Despite the hostile opposition of his family he became a Dominican in 1244, studied in Paris and in Cologne under St. Albert the Great. Patron of schools and universities, died 1274.
Saturday 30th, St. Aidan, born c550 probably in Co. Cavan, studied in Wales under St. David, returned and founded a monastery at Ferns in Co. Wexford  where he later became bishop, died 626, patron of the Diocese of Ferns.
Saturday 30th, Blessed Margaret Ball, Dublin, imprisoned for teaching Catholicism, harbouring priests and having Mass celebrated in her home.  Died in Dublin Castle, 1584.
Saturday 30th, Blessed Francis Taylor, elected Lord Mayor of Dublin 1595, seven years in prison for his Catholic faith, died of the hardships suffered there on 30th January, 1621, aged 70 years.

St. Ciaran’s N.S., Clonmacnois, is currently enrolling for the academic year, 2016/2017.  Enrolment forms are available from the school.  The school office may be contacted on 090 967 4150.  An enrolment and information evening will be held in the school on Tuesday, 16th February, at 7.00 p.m.
 
Counters.  A follow-up meeting of the people who count the Saturday/Sunday collections will be held in Shannonbridge Church, on Monday 25th, at 8.00 p.m.
 
The Parochial House.  Parishioners have decided that the Presbytery be refurbished.  In view of that decision the architect will be asked to draw up a revised schedule of repairs.  It is expected that he will then invite expressions of interest from suitably qualified contractors and initiate the tendering process in due course.
 
Flooding.  We thank Offaly County Council who protected vulnerable houses and kept the R357, Cloghan Road, open during the recent flooding.  Likewise, the members of the Defence Forces who provided transport for children and adults whose homes were rendered inaccessible.
 
Shannonbridge Minor Club G.A.A.  Registration and Skills Training for 5, 6 and 7 year old boys and girls  commences at 6.45 p.m., on Monday 25th, in Clonfanlough Hall.  Registration €10.00 per child/€50.00 euro per family.  New members welcome.  Contact: 086 152 0350 for further information, if required.
 
Shannonbridge G.A.A. are hosting a Mock Wedding on Saturday 30th, at 6.00 p.m., in Shannonbridge Hall.  Mystery Bride and Groom,  food, full bar, live band and D.J.  Invitations, €20.00, available from committee members and players.  This is a club fundraiser - support will be appreciated.

Shannonbridge GAA Notes.

Shannonbridge / Doon Lottery.
Last week’s numbers were 3, 16, 19 and 23.  There were ten match three winners.  The Jackpot this week is €4,400.

Mock Wedding Fundraiser.
Shannonbridge GAA Club will host a Mock Wedding of a Mystery Bride and Groom, on next Saturday 30th January, in Shannonbridge Hall at 6pm.  A great night guaranteed with food, full bar, music and DJ ‘til late.  Tickets are €20 and are available from Jim Killeen (086 8181729), Vinnie Costello (087 9010340), Lucy Quirke (087 7519187) and Paula Claffey (087 6891036).  This is a club fund raiser and any support is greatly appreciated.

“Do This in Memory”.  The First Communion children and their parents participate in the liturgy on Sunday next, 24th, in St. Ciaran’s Church, Clonfanlough, at 10.30 a.m.


Eucharistic Adoration.  The Adoration Committee of Ardagh and Clonmacnois is developing its Diocesan Team.  The purpose of this committee will be to set up a system of viable weekly Adoration in every parish that requests it, or to consolidate or expand Adoration in parishes in which weekly adoration is already in place.  A preliminary meeting will be held at the Family Centre, Longford, on Saturday 6th February, at 11.00 a.m. and finishing at 12.30 p.m.  The Family Centre is located in the grounds of St. Mel’s Cathedral.  Each parish is expected to send delegates to this meeting.  Those willing to represent the Parish of Clonmacnois are asked to contact Fr. Brady as soon as possible, please.


The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins on Monday, 18th.  The theme, Called to proclaim the mighty acts of the Lord”, is inspired by  chapter 2, verses 9-10, of the first letter of St. Peter.  Material for the week of prayer was prepared by representatives of Christian Churches of Latvia.

The Lourdes Assisted Pilgrims’ Annual Collection is taken up this weekend.  The fund is used to subsidise the air fare of sick or assisted people who join the Diocesan Pilgrimage.  Generous support will be greatly appreciated.

The Annual Pilgrimage takes place from Friday, 27th May, to Wednesday, 1st June.  The organisers request the names of sick people who would like to join the pilgrimage.


St. Vincent de Paul.  St. Joseph’s Conference, Moore, wish to thank the Shannonbridge congregation for their very generous contribution of €730.00 to their recent annual collection.  They also thank the organisers who arranged the collection of toys and gifts for less fortunate children, and the parents who gave so willingly.

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes.

Shannonbridge / Doon Lottery.
            Last week’s numbers were 2, 5, 11 and 18.  There were four match three winners.  The Jackpot this week is €4,000.

New Year’s Greetings.
            Best wishes to all our members and supporters for a happy and a healthy New Year.  Many thanks to all who have supported the club last year and looking forward to a successful 2016.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

What started at our Christening needs to be validated by our personal decisions. 
We haven't left our Baptism behind us.  It faces us each day as God's expectation of us.

Cluain Ciaráin Prayer Centre.  The celebration of Mass resumes on Wednesday 13th, at 7.30 p.m.  A Night Prayer Vigil will take place at the centre on Friday 15th. Mass at 9.00 p.m. Adoration and prayer follow, concluding at 2.10 a.m. All Welcome.  Enquiries; 085 774 6763.


An Afternoon of Prayer/Meditation/Solitude, led by Brother Brian Johnson, will be facilitated at Árd Ciaráin, Shannonbridge, on Saturday 16th from 2.00 to 4.00 p.m.  Everyone welcome.

Wednesday 13th is the Feast of St. Hilary, 315-367, elected bishop of his native city of Poitiers in France, exiled by the Emperor because of his relentless opposition to the Arian heresy which denied the divinity of Christ.
Thursday 14th, St. Felix of Nola, Italian priest, tortured under the Emperor Decius, credited with many conversions, died 260.
Friday 15th, St. Ita.  Young people, male and female, came to her monastery at Killeedy, Co. Limerick, hence her title, “Foster Mother of the saints of Ireland”, she died in 570. 
Saturday 16th, St. Fursa, born in Ireland, became one of the great monastic missionaries with foundations in East Anglia and in France where he died about 650.


The Spring Station Masses will be celebrated during the month of February.  Householders who are to host the Stations may contact Fr. Brady to arrange dates.
 

Ordinary Time begins on Monday 11th.  This is the term used to describe periods in the Church year which do not feature a liturgical season.  It is denoted by the colour green and runs from the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord to the beginning of Lent and from Pentecost to Advent.


Temperance Sunday falls on 7th February.  Children from Fifth and Sixth Classes are invited to become Young Pioneers with the consent and support of their parents.  Pioneers who are eligible for Silver or Gold emblems (pins) are asked to contact Fr. “Pioneer” is the magazine of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association. Annual subscription, 20.00.  In the Parish of Clonmacnois it is promoted by Kathleen Curley.  New subscribers welcome, ' 090 967 4161.
