THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

TEMPERANCE SUNDAY

6th/7th February, 2016

Temperance Sunday, coming as it does, on the threshold of Lent, invites us to take a different approach.  It invites us to enjoy a life free of the scourges of alcohol and drug abuse.  Over the years thousands of people have accepted that invitation, have taken on that challenge, and as a consequence, have enjoyed life to the full.  That opportunity is open to all.

Mass times:- Shannonbridge, Saturday (Vigil), 8.00 p.m.; Sunday, 12.00 noon,  Weekdays, 10.00 a.m.; Clonfanlough, Sunday, 10.30 a.m., Ash Wednesday, 7.00 p.m.

Mass is celebrated at Cluain Ciaráin Prayer Centre, on Wednesday evenings at 7.30.

Mass for the Intentions of the People of the Parish, Missa pro Populo, in Shannonbridge on Sunday 7th, at 12.00 noon.

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent and a day of fast and abstinence.  Fast = one full meal and two “collations”, light meals.  Abstinence = the use of meat or its products is forbidden.  Ashes will be blessed and distributed at Mass, 10.00 a.m. and 7.00 p.m.

Sunday 7th is the Feast of St. Mel, Founder and First Bishop of Ardagh.  Patron of the Diocese.  Tradition has it that he was nephew of St. Patrick whom he accompanied or followed to Ireland.  Died in 488.

Wednesday 10th, St. Scholastica, born in Italy, sister of St. Benedict and one of the first Benedictine nuns, died 543.
