REMEMBERING OUR DEAD: a thought for Cemetery Weekend upcoming
Writing from his sick bed to his mother not long before his death, Saint Aloysius Gonzaga appealed to their shared faith saying ‘our parting will not be for long; we shall see each other again in heaven; we shall be united with our Saviour; there we shall praise him with heart and soul, sing of his mercies for ever, and enjoy eternal happiness.’
When we lay our loved ones to rest the grave is blessed and named ‘a sign of hope that promises resurrection even as it claims our mortal bodies.’ It is the Resurrection of Jesus that grounds our hope. Where The Lord has gone we hope to follow. He is the way that our loved ones have travelled. The annual ritual of the Blessing of Graves or Cemetery Sunday taps into that hope we all share and that Easter faith that assures us that somehow beyond the horizon of death, we are still united with those we love. Love never ends.
As we stand praying at the graveside of the ones we love today we might also draw consolation from the truth that they are praying for us also. Our loved ones still bear the same love for us and perhaps their prayer is even more assured as the young Aloysius reminded his mother: in death he’d be ‘one living face to face with God, one whose prayers can bring you in your troubles more powerful aid than they ever could on earth.’ As we remember our dead today, we are mindful that they remember us too.

EAST AFRICA APPEAL—2nd Collection Today

Bishop Francis has asked that an Emergency Collection in aid of Trócaire’s work in East Africa will take place in our Parish on the weekend 22nd- 23rd July. Nearly 25 million people in Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia are currently in urgent need of food and water due to drought. Trócaire is reaching over 150,000 people across the region with emergency food, water and sanitation.Needs are enormous - please support our appeal and help us reach more people with life-saving aid.
Post- Communion Reflection: (The following prayer is often attributed to St Teresa of Calcutta It was more likely to have originated within the Order of the Missionaries of Charity which she founded) Lord, when I am hungry, give me someone in need of food; when I am thirsty, send me someone needing a drink; when I am cold, send me someone to warm; when I am grieved, offer me someone to console; when my cross grows heavy, let me share another’s cross; when I think only of myself, draw my thoughts to another

SHANNONBRIDGE GAA Club development meeting on Monday 17th July in Shannonbridge Hall at 8.30PM Following On from last club meeting in Clonfanlough Hall, there will be another important meeting next Monday evening to decide on fundraising for developments being proposed out at the Football pitch. Ideas thrown to the floor at the last meeting included New floodlights around the pitch, a walking track, electronic scoreboard and further improvements around the playing fields and dressing rooms. In order to make all this happen we need input from all corners of the parish. We had a very healthy attendance at the last meeting 3 weeks ago and we would hope for the same next week!

CRISIS IN EAST-AFRICA – The Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference has announced that special collections at all Masses will take place across Ireland on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd July to fund life-saving aid for people currently affected by the devastating hunger crisis in east-Africa. Our President Michael D. Higgins has publicly supported this appeal. The money raised will be donated to TRÓCAIRE, the overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland, which is delivering emergency food, water and health care to the 25 million people affected. Globally, this crisis has received very little attention. Appeals for aid are under-funded. The UN has received just 37% of the funding it needs to respond to the crisis in Somalia. The world is distracted by the actions of a handful of powerful politicians, while in East Africa millions suffer in silence. It is unacceptable for so many to go hungry.

A WORD IN YOUR EAR: Schools are closed and families will be going on holidays. May everybody be safe on the roads and at the seaside during the Summer. We were saddened by the devastating loss of life in the terrible disaster that occurred in the Grenfell Tower fire in West London. Forest fires swept through European countries; the worst being in Portugal . This disaster brings home to us how important it is that we do everything we can to protect our environment  our common home. Let us pray for those who have died and for their loved ones who are heartbroken. Lord your love for us has never failed. Lord your love has never failed us. Listen to our prayer and come to the aid of those who are suffering because of disaster and tragedy. Save us from all evil and help us in time of need. Amen
