 A Parent’s Prayer
Thank you for my children, Lord; I know they
are a gift from You. Daily I need Your
strength and wisdom to train them in the way
they should go. Give me patience and a joyful
heart; let me be an example of Your love and
forgiveness. Thank You, Father, for the
honour of being a parent. Amen
 THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
We always note the inaugural address of a leader, outlining, as it usually does, the vision of the new regime. Today we listen with special attention as Jesus delivers his first sermon in the synagogue in Capernaum. His mission will be different. He will have a special concern and care for the last, the least and the lost. During His public ministry, He
will put flesh on the words of that first sermon. He will touch the untouchable. He will invite the outsider in. He will welcome  the sinner home. He will in short, proclaim the equal dignity of all God’s children. G.K. Chesterton, poet and writer used a
simple, everyday image to explain the heart of
Jesus’ mission: ‘People are equal in the same
way that pennies are equal. Some are bright;
others are dull; some are worn smooth;
others are sharp and fresh. But all are equal
in value, because each penny bears the image
of the sovereign, each person bears the
image of the King of Kings’.
 CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK, 27th January
– 3rd February - Theme: Celebrating the work of
our local Catholic Schools. An annual celebration
which commemorates the ongoing and
inspirational contribution of Catholic Schools to
the education and faith formation of children and
young people. We are deeply indebted to all our
teachers for the service they provide
PRESENTATION OF THE LORD (Candlemas
Day) Sat. 2nd February – Exactly 40 days after
Christmas, we mark when Joseph and Mary offered the infant Jesus to God in the Temple. Candles are blessed on this day to remind us that Jesus is the light of the world. Candles (for Church and home use) will be blessed at all the Masses. Please mark clearly.

FEBRUARY - The Feast of St. Brigid on the 1st
February begins the season of spring. Brigid is
renowned for her hospitality, almsgiving and care
of the sick. She was born c.454. When she was
young her father wished to make a very suitable
marriage for her but she insisted in consecrating
her life to God. She received the veil and spiritual
formation probably from St. Mel and stayed for a
period under his direction in Ardagh (Co.
Longford). Others followed her example and this
led her to found a double monastery in Kildare
with the assistance of Bishop Conleth. She died in
524, and her cult is widespread not only
throughout Ireland but in several European lands.
The St. Brigid’s Cross, in legend used by Brigid to
explain the Christian faith, remains a popular sign
of God’s protection. St. Brigid’s Crosses will be
blessed at Mass on Friday 1st February

ST. BLAISE - Feast Day, Sun. 3rd Feb. - Patron of sore throats and sick cattle. He was a physician before becoming a Bishop. The blessing of St. Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love for us and for the sick.

 Tourism Masterplan for Shannon Region
Consultative Workshops
Mid-Shannon  Athlone
Radisson Blu, Northgate St. Athlone
Wednesday 23rd January 2019
10.00am – 1.00pm
The Masterplan is addressing the Shannon Navigation from Limerick City to Lough Allen, including Lough Key, Co Roscommon the Shannon-Erne Waterway to Belturbet in Co. Cavan. It encompasses a 10km wide corridor traversing 10 counties (see map attached), and will form a central component of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands experience offering.
These workshops will help us to identify compelling tourism experiences, based on emerging themes from consultations to date, to underpin the Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands ‘Active in Nature’ tourism proposition for the River Shannon. For this we need key people who know, love, understand, and live or work along the River Shannon corridor, who can contribute to developing ideas for new and exciting tourism initiatives along the entire river.  Catholic Schools Week Catholic Schools Week 2019 will run from 27th Jan to 3rd February 2019. As Irish society changes, it is important that we reflect on the unique contribution of Catholic schools to our collective goal of education. Each Catholic School shares an ethos that is inclusive, welcoming and vibrant. Each school works towards a vision of each student as made in the likeness and image of God. This means that we work towards helping each child, irrespective of background, ethnicity or creed, read their full potential academically, spiritually and socially. This year, our parish celebrates the unique contribution&work of our parish school Clonmacnois N..S.
SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME There are seven miracles of Jesus recorded in the Gospel of St. John. They are referred to as ‘signs’. The spectacular drama of the Wedding Feast of Cana is a case in point. It teaches us, that, when Jesus is invited into a situation, He transforms it for the better. He alone can restore hope when the wine of life runs out. The abundance of wine in the story points to the limitless generosity of God. He takes delight in granting us all we need. The contribution of the servants who filled the stone jars reminds us that the Lord relies on us to be His instruments in the world. And, finally we take note of Mary’s instruction to the servants, which are her last recorded words in the Bible: ‘Do whatever He tells you.’ It would make a wise New Year’s resolution!
