THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
On Christmas night we welcomed the child Jesus. On the Feast of the Epiphany we learned of His mission. Today we hear that He begins His public ministry by entering the river Jordan to be baptised by John. The early Christians celebrated their Baptism date more passionately than their birthday. Do I know the date of my Baptism? At my Baptism I was named by my parents; claimed by the priest for Christ, and aimed to live my life as He would want. In other words I was conferred with an extraordinary dignity, and entrusted with a precious responsibility. As I dip my finger in the holy water font today may it remind me of my dignity as a member of God’s family and the ongoing responsibility that flows from that reality. Whether in living room, classroom or dressing room may I try to act always in such a way that, through me, others may see Him. Baptism is faith in action.
