33rd SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
33rd SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
I hid your talent’
‘It isn’t the thing you do dear,
it’s the thing you leave undone,
Which gives you a bit of heartache
At the setting of the sun’.
These lines from the poem ‘Sin of Omission’ by American poet Margaret Sangster sits perfectly with the parable of the talents in today’s Gospel. The poet goes on to challenge us by mentioning the tender word we failed to utter, the letter we should have written; the stone we could have lifted; the acts of kindness we might have performed. The servant in the Gospel who buried his talent committed the sin of omission. He was a cautious man, lacking ambition, courage and confidence. His failure to take a risk calls to mind the old adage: ‘if you are careful enough nothing bad or good will ever happen to you’. The Christian must be prepared to take risks in building up God’s kingdom. It’s a question of using our gifts creatively to make His face seen and His voice heard. We are all gifted differently, but the gifts must be nurtured. ‘The artist is nothing without the gift; the gift is nothing without the work’ (Emile Zola). No talent can survive the blight of neglect. Hell is full of the talented! It’s worth noting that the other two servants in the parable are rewarded for being ‘faithful in small things’. In the fourth century, St. John Chrysostom proclaimed that ‘faithfulness in little things is a big thing’. There is nothing small in the service of God. ‘Little things on little wings bear little souls to heaven’. That is what the poet wrote two hundred years ago. That is what Jesus taught two thousand years ago

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION  My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You have already come, and unite myself entirely to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen
Prayer for remembering in November
Prayer for remembering in November
(From the Hope Prayer Book– Liam Lawton)
Lord, the harvest now is gathered, the meadows golden-brown/ we rest before cold winter/ The silent sheaves bow down.

Barren tree cry leaves into the river/ Yellow-red they fall/ Floating on the water's edge/ The lonely tree stands tall.

An old raven perches/ High above the church tower/ And cries a  lonesome sound/To the bells of Time.

Now we remember/When life is gathered/And November winds blow.

Memories to the fore/ All the friends who sleep in death/ I remember/ More & more.

How short is time/ Lest we forget/ Taking much for granted/ For life is brief/From tree to leaf/ A tiny seed once planted.

Lord may my memories always be happy ones of love of joy that no time will destroy for those who have died are gathered to You Waking in light in knowledge In truth.  May they tell stories/ May they sing songs/In the Garden of Eden/  All sadness gone.
But they are as close now/A breath on the wind/ May God show His mercy/ To souls who have sinned.
Where yew trees are planted/ That catch autumn dew/ Where heather is purple/And berries are few
So sleep dear souls in silence/ Beneath the blue moon's gaze/  Carved on weathered headstone/ The Years of waiting days.

Waiting for You O Lord
World Day Remembrance for road traffic victims: 15th November 2020 Lord Jesus: Protect all our family and friends as we travel the roads that leads us to Christmas and beyond. Keep us safe. Mind us on the road as we drive, cycle and walk. Bring all safely home and comfort those also who have been bereaved. Support those who have been injured and we pray for the medical teams who care for them. Each day let us remember to cherish and respect the beautiful gift of life as we drive with courtesy and respect always. Amen.
