CEMETERY Many thanks to people who routinely clean and clear up in our cemetery of Clonmacnois. I always feel this is being read by the converted and with just a little nudge we might get people who leave their grave material at the wall or into adjoining fields to please stop and consider and bring it (rubbish) home. Also remember to close the gate so domestic pets don’t enter. Thank you for casting a kindly eye and helpful hand over other graves too.

18th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘Work for food that endures to eternal life’ Jack Dempsey was one of the most famous and popular boxers in history. On July 4th 1919 he reached the pinnacle of his career when he defeated Jess Willard to become heavyweight champion of the world. The next morning when he awoke in his hotel room he had a strange sense of emptiness inside. When asked to explain this surprising feeling, he replied: ‘success didn’t taste the way I thought it would. I had won the world championship, so what’? Down through the ages people have discovered as Dempsey did, that worldly success, fame, adulation do not satisfy the deepest hungers of the human heart. Seeking satisfaction in the things of the world is like chasing the wind. Something more is needed, and in chapter six of St. John’s Gospel Jesus points the way. He is the Bread of Life and our hearts will always be restless until they rest in Him. Every longing that we try to satisfy apart from Him will fall short. Come to think of it the main difference between the greatest saint and the greatest sinner is where they go to satisfy the hungers of their hearts. The seventeenth century French philosopher Blaise Pascal expressed it better than most when he wrote: ‘There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each person which cannot be satisfied by any created thing, but only by God the Creator made known by Jesus Christ’.

PRAYERS AT A GRAVE

Sign of Cross  In the Name of …..

Our brother/sister N. has gone to his/her rest in the peace of Christ. May the Lord now welcome him/her to the table of God’s children in heaven. With faith and hope in eternal life, let us assist him/her with our prayers. Let us pray to the Lord also for ourselves. May we who mourn be reunited one day with N.; together may we meet Christ Jesus when he who is our life appears in glory.

Scripture Verse : [ Matthew 25:34 119] Come, you whom my Father has blessed, says the Lord; inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world.

PRAYER AT A GRAVESIDE

Lord Jesus Christ, by your own three days in the tomb, you hallowed the graves of all who believe in you and so made the grave a sign of hope that promises resurrection even as it claims our mortal bodies. Grant that our brother/sister may sleep here in peace until you awaken him/her to glory, for you are the resurrection and the life. Then he/she will see you face to face and in your light will see light and know the splendour of God, for you live and reign for ever and ever. R⁄ Amen.

Our Father….Hail Mary

Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

Concluding Prayer: May the love of God and the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ bless and console us and gently wipe every tear from our eyes: in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

 CEMETERY REMEMBRANCE

At this time we remember and pray for all our dearly departed loved ones and especially those who have been laid to rest in our cemetery in the past year May they rest in peace.

CEMETERY PRAYER

May God’s perpetual light shine upon the faces of all laid to rest here. May the lives they lived in our homes continue to inspire and to guide us on the way. May the memories we carry and share in stories, keep them part of our lives and part of our family. May the gentle Summer rains fall like tears from the skies of Heaven to bless them. May the wild flowers and the Summer meadows whisper their prayer in the gentle breeze of silence. May the birds of the dawn chorus sing their prayer of the beauty and joy of Heaven. May we always reverence this sacred clay as the holy ground that holds seeds of hope. May each time we visit, walk, sit, pray and listen here bring us closer to the heart of God’s kindness. May the Angels guide them, the Saints protect them and the prayer of Mary hold them in the light. Amen.
