17th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘Jesus gave out as much as was wanted’
Chapter six of St. John’s Gospel is known as the ‘Bread Section’. It begins today with the ‘sign’ of the ‘feeding of the multitude’. This is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels because it prefigures the great event of the Last Supper when the disciples were fed with the ‘Bread of Life’. The episode speaks of the boundless generosity of God and the fact that He alone can satisfy the hungers of the human heart. The little boy offered the little that he had-five barley loaves and two fish- and Jesus did the rest. Nothing is insignificant in His hands. Nothing is lost of what is given to Him. It was this Gospel story that Pope St. John Paul II proclaimed at a Mass with young people in Scotland in 1982. In his homily that day, the Holy Father spoke these encouraging words: ‘The little boy gave all he had and Jesus miraculously fed 5,000 people. It is exactly the same with your lives. Place your lives in the hands of Jesus. He will accept and bless you, and He will make use of your lives in a way that exceeds your greatest expectation’. Today Jesus asks for the loaves and fishes of our time and talents. If we withhold our time and talents we just might miss a miracle!

SAINTS FOCUS July 26th Ss Joachim and Anne They are traditionally named as the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of the Lord. Their feasts were celebrated separately until joined together in the Calendar of 1969. St Anne is the patron of Canada.
World Grandparents Day. Monday 26th is the Feast of Joachim and Ann the grandparents of Jesus. This Sunday we celebrate the gift of all our Grandparents. One of the most painful aspects of lockdowns in the past 16 months was the forced separation of Grandparents from their Grandchildren. It was a pain deeply felt by both, as well as by the parents of course. We want to remind all Grandparents today of the gifts that you bring and the gifts that you are for all your Grandchildren.

PRAYER FOR WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY I thank You, Lord, for the comfort of Your presence: even in times of loneliness, You are my hope and my confidence, You have been my rock and my fortress since my youth! I thank You for having given me a family and for having blessed me with a long life. I thank You for moments of joy and difficulty, for the dreams that have already come true in my life and for those that are still ahead of me. I thank You for this time of renewed fruitfulness to which You call me. Increase, O Lord, my faith, make me a channel of your peace, teach me to embrace those who suffer more than me, to never stop dreaming and to tell of your wonders to new generations. Protect and guide Pope Francis and the Church, that the light of the Gospel might reach the ends of the earth. Send Your Spirit, O Lord, to renew the world, that the storm of the pandemic might be calmed, the poor consoled and wars ended. Sustain me in weakness and help me to live life to the full in each moment that You give me, in the certainty that you are with me every day even until the end of the age. Amen
MISSING YOU – A prayer for grandparents and grandchildren missing each other Lord, I am missing their tiny hands in mine I miss their wrinkles and their smile I am missing their visits and our weekly walks I miss their voice and our face to face talks I am missing hearing all about their day I miss them showing me the way I am missing hugs and kisses I miss sharing fun and wishes I am missing tucking them in on sleepovers I miss story time snuggled under the covers I am missing joining our hands in prayer I miss just having them there I am missing seeing them grow I miss them sharing all the things they know I am missing the Rites of passage that have passed I miss being them being with us at Mass I am missing the grandchildren's ring on the door bell I miss granny and grandad and hope they are well. I am missing their presence day and night, I miss my grandparents, my guiding light. Please bless my grandchildren, and keep them safe and sound. Pease mind granny and grandad until we can have them around. AMEN by Brenda Drumm, Catholic Communications Office
