SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
At the time of Christ, whenever a local ruler was travelling through the countryside his servants went before him to remove obstacles from his path so that he could make a smooth, safe journey. Today, John the Baptist uses that same image, familiar to his listeners, as he cries from the wilderness, asking people to prepare the way of the Lord. Preparing the way of the Lord means removing from our hearts any obstacles that would hinder us from being open to His word. Advent provides a space that enables us to respond, to think again, to straighten the crooked places in our hearts and minds so that we may receive Him with an open receiving heart. Then the beauty of Christmas will be found, not in the presents, but, rather, in His presence.
Digital Advent Calendar: Now in its eighth year, the popular interactive Advent calendar is available on www.catholicbishops.ie This year’s calendar theme focuses on the theme of ‘Hope’. Each day during Advent a virtual door can be opened on the calendar containing faith content, including an audio/video reflection
ADVENT a time of waiting. We wait for much in life for a child to say their first word or take their first step. Parents presume that the child will walk or talk; but there is relief when this happens in time. Sometimes we wait in certainty, other times in hope. Much of our waiting in life is in some tension, as we hope for the best. We wait for love in life, for faith to grow and become strong, and much happens at God's time, like a child's first word or step cannot be exactly timed. Our waiting for Jesus is something like that. God in Jesus comes into every life but his coming cannot be timed. In our waiting for God is our finding of God, our search is itself done in the presence of God. He is always near and we are always waiting. Lord Jesus, we wait for your birth in faith; we await your birth in hope and for your coming in glory. D. Neary S.J.
