SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
‘Do whatever He tells you’
There are seven miracles of Jesus recorded in the Gospel of St. John. They are referred to as ‘signs’. The spectacular drama of the Wedding Feast of Cana is a case in point. It teaches us that, when Jesus is invited into a situation, He transforms it for the better. He alone can restore hope when the wine of life runs out. It is deeply significant that the water in the stone jars was no ordinary water. It had been used by the guests to wash their feet as they entered the wedding hall. It was this foul water which Jesus changed into the choicest of wines. The ugly becomes beautiful in His hands. The abundance of wine in the story points to the limitless generosity of God. He takes delight in granting us all we need. The contribution of the servants who filled the stone jars and served the wine reminds us that the Lord relies on us to be His instruments in the world. And finally, we take note of Mary’s instruction to the servants, which are her last recorded words in the Bible: ‘Do whatever He tells you’. It would make a wise New Year’s resolution!

The whole country has been wounded deeply by the tragic and horrific death of the young teacher Ashling Murphy this past week. There are some things so awful that the mind cannot comprehend them and the heart cannot bear. Our thoughts are with Ashling’s family, her friends, her community and especially with her First Class children. It has made me reflect on that unique relationship all teachers have with their pupils. It is such a sacred bond of trust. It’s a time once again to honour the role all our school staff play in our Community and with all of our children entrusted each day to their care and their love. We are forever grateful. We continue to remember in the prayer of this week the Murphy family and their beautiful daughter Ashling. May she continue to make her beautiful music in Heaven

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
In the light of the horrific murder of Aishling Murphy we, especially as men, need to reflect on our attitude and behaviour towards women. The following poem highlights the often hidden fear and anxiety of many women in our homes, towns and country today. Being a woman comes with a price
Being a woman comes with a price
Always on guard
Waiting and listening
For that intrusion at any moment
To steal her away
She is like Jesus
Ready to forgive in a moment
Even though the pain she endured
Left her bloodied and broken
Never to be the same again
Reality for her
Is to hide it within
To make sure no one knows
The depth of her despair
At the same time
Trying to keep it all together.
Being a woman comes with a price You can see it in her eyes It’s held so deep within If it touches her soul She sometimes can never make it back again Being a woman comes with a price. - Bonnie Doxtato
