FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

“Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised by John”

The feast of the Baptism of the Lord madrks the end of the Christmas season. The word baptism is derived from the Greek verb “baptizo“, meaning “I wash or immerse“. And so it was for Jesus, as He embarked on his public ministry, immersed himself in the waters of the Jordan to be baptised by John. We likewise, were immersed in the waters of the font on the day of our baptism. On that day we were “Christened“. We took on the name of Christ. We identified with his life and mission and join the ranks of those who believe in him. That special moment mate the beginning of a walk with the Lord that will last forever. It conferred on us a wonderful dignity and a great responsibility. Near the end of his life Pope Saint John Paul the second was asked in an interview to name the most important day of his life. Without hesitation, he responded that the day he was baptised was the most important day of his life. More recently, Pope Francis proclaimed that “Baptism  is the best gift we have received since through it we belong to God and possess the joy of salvation“. The early Christians appreciated this wonderful gift and celebrated their Baptism day more passionately than their birthday. Could we recaptured attention tradition and begin by familiarising ourselves with the date of our baptism?

Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord A Question to be Asked Have you ever asked your parents why they had you baptised? Their answer might run something like this: We were over the moon when you were born. You were our first/third/fifth child, and we loved you as much as any of our other children. We were so happy that you had arrived into the world safely and we wanted to do the best thing for you. So we brought you to the church, thanked God, and poured water over you in his name. Mam held you, well wrapped up. Dad was very proud and wore his best clothes. Before you were born we had spent some time discussing what Christian names we would give you. Once we held you we decided, and gave you the names by which you would forever be known to us, to the world and to God. We wanted you to be part and parcel of God’s family and to have the strengths of Mass and the Sacraments. We wanted you to have the support of our families, of the neighbours and of the parish. That day we gave you what was most precious to us, our love and faith. You were our son/daughter. Our ‘favour’ was on you. It still is. Remember that.

 FAREWELL TO BISHOP FRANCIS DUFFY

Today in Tuam, Bishop Francis Duffy will be installed as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Tuam. We pray God’s blessing on him in his new role. We also thank him for his guidance and leadership of our Diocese of Ardagh & Clonmacnois over the past eight years. For now our Diocese will be guided by an administrator who will be nominated by the diocesan consultors when they meet this week. We await what the future holds for our diocese—it could be a new bishop or it could be a type of amalgamation of dioceses. I ask you to pray that the Holy Spirit will guide us on the right path in this period of waiting.
