TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple’.
What is a disciple? According to GK Chesterton, Jesus promised His disciples three things: that they would be completely fearless, absurdly happy and in constant trouble. Being a disciple, then, is exceedingly rewarding but extraordinarily demanding. It is much more than being a follower. It is in essence the call to become who Jesus would be if He were you. Wearing a cross does not make you a disciple; carrying your cross does. The halfway Christian is a contradiction. As St. Thomas More was being led to his execution on July 6th 1535 for refusing to bend to the will of King Henry VIII he uttered the immortal words: ‘I die the king’s loyal servant, but God’s first.’ That is what it means to be a disciple.
Thursday, 1st September is World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. The day is inspired by Pope Francis' landmark encyclical Laudato Si’, which calls on "every person living on this planet" to care for our shared Earth. “Listen to the voice of creation” is the theme and invitation of this year’s Season of Creation. In his message for the World Day of Prayer 2022, Pope Francis calls us to use the season to "cultivate our ecological conversion” and to pray together in “the great cathedral of Creation”. He warns that we are reaching “a breaking point" and must act decisively so that "we and future generations can continue to rejoice in creation’s sweet song of life and hope."(Pope Francis). God you made our Mother Earth, who cries out with sorrow. May the wonder of your creation be revealed to us: water that gives life, not destruction crops sown, not destroyed pure air to breathe, not polluted. Renew in us a respect for the magic of a tiny seed a flowing waterfall a hovering skylark Restore us to closeness with you. Call us to change for you and may your spirit cry out within us always. MASS SERVERS: Should be calling in this week regarding Altar Serving. It means a few Safeguarding Forms and Protocols to be adhered to. It is hoped to draw up teams and a weekly rota in September,
The focus now moves to the table of the Word of God; the ambo or lectern from where the readings are proclaimed. We sit and listen to the Word of God; the stories of God’s people. On Sundays there are three readings from the Bible. The first reading will be from the Hebrew Scriptures (except during the Easter season). We recall the origins of our covenant. It will relate to the Gospel selection and will give background and an insight into the meaning of what Jesus will do in the Gospel. Then we will sing or recite a psalm— a song from God’s own inspired hymnal, the Book of Psalms of the Hebrew Bible. The second reading will be taken from one of the four gospels. You might be surprised to know that not only the Scripture readings are taken from the Bible but also prayers such as the Holy, Holy, Holy and the Lord’s Prayer and indeed most of the words and phrases of the prayers of the mass are taken from the Bible. Because of the unique presence of Christ in the proclamation of the Gospel, it has long been the custom to stand in attentive reverence to hear these words. We believe that Christ “is present In his word, since it is he himself who speaks when the holy Scriptures are read in the church” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, #7). The priest will again greet us with “The Lord be with you.” He then introduces the Gospel reading while marking a small cross on his forehead, lips and heart.
