TWENTY FOURTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘The one who was lost has been found’. Today’s Gospel offers us three beautiful, life-giving parables about lost things. Jesus speaks with great tenderness about a shepherd who loses one of his sheep, a woman who loses one of her coins, a father who loses one of his sons. His message is clear and encouraging. Everyone matters to God. He will never give-up on His children. He searches unceasingly with fatherly concern for the one who has strayed and welcomes him/her home. As St. Augustine once wrote: ‘He loves each of us as if there were only one of us’. It was no wonder that this uplifting message drew sinners in great numbers to hear the Lord speak and seek His company. They were touched deeply by His merciful words in what was a merciless world. Today as then, people yearn to hear that they matter. Pope Benedict had this universal yearning in mind when he couched the timeless teaching of Jesus in these memorable words: ‘Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed. Each of us is loved. Each of us is necessary’

There are “many challenges for the handing on of the faith” in Ireland, according to the Irish bishops, responding to the national synthesis of the synodal process. The challenges include a need for inner healing and hope, especially among those who have suffered abuse by church personnel and in church institutions, the bishops said. In a letter accompanying the repo3rt sent to Cardinal Mario Grech, secretary general of the Synod of Bishops, the leader of the Irish Church, Archbishop Eamon Martin, said the synthesis, which is the fruit of consultations with tens of thousands of Irish Catholics, acknowledges the impact in recent decades of a major decline in the practice of the faith, and in vocations to priesthood and religious life. The landmark document, published recently, calls for greater transparency, greater lay participation in decision-making as well as accountability within parish and diocesan church structures. It indicates a strong desire for fresh models of leadership to recognise and facilitate the role of women, as well as men. These include ordination to the diaconate and priesthood. Among the 13 themes in the document is one on clergy which highlights the appreciation for priests among the faithful and a recognition that they are over-worked and often feel burdened by the weight of governance and administration. Another overarching thread evident throughout the consultation, the report notes, is that the gifts of lay-people are under-utilised by the Church. There was also “a clear, overwhelming call for the full inclusion of LGBTQI+ people in the Church.” -Sarah McDonald, The Tablet, 27-8-2022
† If only closed minds came with closed mouths.
† Adopt the pace of nature; her secret is patience.
† Habits are first cobwebs then cables.
† Live so that the priest at your funeral can tell the truth.
† The measure of character is what we would do if we knew we would never be found out. -
