 FOURTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

The best portraits are those that convey something of the spirit of the subject. The Sermon on the Mount, which is probably a compilation of several sermons, takes us to the heart of Jesus. It’s the closest we have to a self-portrait of the Lord. All the sayings proclaimed in the Sermon become flesh and blood in Him. We are told that He sat down and began to speak. When a rabbi sat down he was about to deliver an important teaching. When he opened his mouth to speak, he was opening his heart. The teaching of Jesus, expressed in the form of nine ‘Beatitudes’ is an exaltation of the ordinary. It’s a blueprint for happiness. It’s a call to a way of life that is attainable, but it does stand the values of the world on their head. The poor, the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers, the ‘nobodies’ of this world have built their house on rock and they will have their reward, while those who pursue power, prestige, possessions, pleasure, popularity have laid their foundations on sand and their house will crumble. The Beatitudes are the attitudes to which we should aspire.

FEAST OF ST BRIGID: St. Brigid’s Day (Gaelic: Lá Fhéile Bríde) is celebrated on Wednesday next, February 1st. The Bank Holiday will take place on the first Monday in February each year, except where St Brigid’s day happens to fall on a Friday, in which case that Friday February 1st will be a public holiday. A “consensus” among the government was reached, according to the Sunday Times, with employers and trade unions set to name the 10th Bank Holiday after the patron saint as part of the pandemic bonus to thank the public in general, and frontline workers in particular

St. Brigid’s Blessing

May Brigid bless the house where you dwell. Bless every fireside every wall and door.

Bless every heart that beats beneath its roof. Bless every hand that toils to bring it joy.

Bless every foot that walks its portals through. May Brigid bless the house that shelters you

CLONMACNOIS SCHOOL B.O.M. MEETING

January 31st @ 7:30pm

PRAYER TO ST. BRIGID You were a woman of peace You brought harmony where there was conflict You brought light to the darkness, You brought hope to the downcast. May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled and anxious, and may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts and in our world. Inspire us to act justly and to reverence all God has made. Brigid, you were a voice for the wounded and the weary Strengthen what is weak within us. Calm us into a quietness that heals and listens. May we grow each day into greater wholeness In mind, body and spirit. Amen

Wishing you all blessings for Saint Brigid’s Day.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON FUTURE USE OF THE OLD SCHOOL (Shannonbridge)

A good attendance turned up for this meeting on Wed 25th Jan. with consultants Kevin Heanue and Ciaran Lynch and members of the architectural team appointed to undertake the design. The process has been steered by Shannonbridge Action Group and public funding has been obtained

The building ceased as a school in 2007. It’s a keenly felt loss. The main building is a protected structure, but sadly with time & no electricity or water allowed as it is vacated building (insurance requirement) deterioration was inevitable.  Since Jan 2022 the Dept of Educ have surrendered the lease on the National School property.

The just transition programmes provides us with an opportunity & resources to identify a good use/ uses for this 1 acre site. Considerations was given to challenges like small size (thus probably too small to be a visitor centre), protected structure, fairly small level of local demand for any one use, the importance of tourism based accommodation, a very central location, possible field studies centre for 3rd Level students. The idea is to attract in people to a centre  that is multi-use and flexible.

Some possibilities for usage are:

-A large room for education & community use

-2 units to accommodate 2x 6 person enterprises.

-A facility for 4 hot desks (where a person can book a fully serviced point (fibre broadband) to work remotely.

-a toilet/washing area facility

-a kitchen and dining facility with a mixture of double and single rooms and 24 bed spaces.

A camping/ glamping area as a second phase.

-Two 12 person meeting rooms as part of the facility

-Sensory gardens etc plus some parking.

The challenge is to ensure building design is flexible & capable of multi-purpose usage so that it can adapt & focus on best use as demand dictates, Each space should be designed so that it can pivot to meet the need. The need for management and marketing is critical in what might be a leased facility. Any views, ideas or feedback welcome to any member of the Action Group. Or I (T. Cox) can forward them

First Friday Feb 3rd  is the First Friday.

Please Note: Anyone who is sick and housebound in the Parish who would like to receive Holy Communion on the First Friday’s, please contact

Feast of St. Blaise Prayer of Blessing of Throat “Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from all ailments of the throat and from every other sickness, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.”

 THIRD SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

He said to them, ‘Follow me’

The first disciples were called without promises, programmes or guarantees. Peter and Andrew were casting their nets in the lake when they were called by Jesus. James and John were mending their nets. In these two words the disciple’s map is laid out. Disciples of Jesus are casters and menders. We cast the nets whenever we show the face of Christ to the world. We mend the nets whenever we reach out to bind up hearts that are broken or bodies that are torn. It is not enough to know God. We must make Him known. My life as a Christian should make nonbelievers question their disbelief in God. Tennis legend Arthur Ashe used as his motto for sport and for life: ‘Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can’. As for the sportsman so for the disciple. We do what we can in His name to cast and to mend. The rest is in His hands

Catholic Schools Week: Sunday 22nd to Sunday 29th January The theme for this year’s Catholic Schools Week is: Walking Together in Faith and Love: Each of us are on a journey in life. For Catholics, this journey begins and ends in God. Each part of that journey is a chance to come to know and love God. We can feel God’s presence when we pray, when we spend time with loved ones, in nature, in moments of joy and when we come together as a community to celebrate God’s love at Mass.

 Daily themes are as follows:

· Monday: Walking Together in Faith:

·  Tuesday: Waking Together in Love.

·  Wednesday: Walking Together to Celebrate [Grandparents Day. ]

· Thursday: Walking Together to Transform our World.

· Friday: Walking Together in Hope.

May I wish  our school in the parish every good blessing in this Catholic Schools Week.

A Teachers Blessing. You are blessed. You hold the children, in the palm of your hands. You form the minds, you inspire the hearts, you shape the hopes of the children of the future of the Kingdom of God. They bless you in return, with promise fulfilled, with hope realised, with lives well lived. Amen.

Before Mass the servers recite the following prayer, Let us pray; God, Our Father, you have given us the privilege  of serving at your altar. Help us to be attentive and reverent in Your House. May we always think of what we are doing and saying; may we listen to your word; and so may we give glory to you and be an example to others. Amen.

Reflection on Christian Unity

[A poem to reflect this week of prayer for Christian Unity by Sam Hargreaves]

We are many, God's great diversity, Different faces, different races, yet we are one in Christ. Butchers, bakers, website makers, bankers, tailors, teachers, sailors, yet we are one in Christ.

Fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, single, married, broken, carried, yet we are one in Christ.

Some hopeful, some hopeless, some cope well, some cope less. Some sure and some doubt, some whisper, some shout, yet we are one in Christ.

Those with abundance, those with need, those who are generous or wrestle with greed, yet we are one in Christ.

A broken body, torn apart, mars God's image, breaks God's heart. And yet our Father knows how the end will be, when all his kids will sing in harmony, the bride will dazzle, her branches bloom, so add your voice to hymn the tune that we are one in Christ.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME(A)
‘Look there is the Lamb of God’
We were always told as children that it was bad manners to point a finger at somebody. It is true, however, that there are times in life when it behoves us to point the way forward for others. This is especially the case for people of faith. We are faced with a very basic choice as proposed by English writer HG Wells: ‘If there is no God nothing matters. If there is a God nothing else matters’. If we accept the latter proposition we must act. We are our brother’s and our sister’s keeper. As the Roman philosopher, Cicero declared over two thousand years ago: ‘not for ourselves alone are we born’. Like John the Baptist in today’s Gospel we must be continually pointing the way to the One who is the Way. Personal example is the best way to lead others to Christ. ‘Don’t tell them; show them’

WHAT IS  THIS “Ordinary Time”
The origin of the name Ordinary Time comes from the Latin word ‘ordinalis’ meaning ‘numbered’ or ‘ordered’ and signifies a numbered list of weeks that anchor our daily lives in the Catholic Church. Ordinary Time is divided into two timeperiods consisting of 33/34 weeks.
1. From the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord until Ash Wednesday.
2. 2. From Pentecost Sunday until the First Sunday of Advent. The final Sunday of Ordinary Time is the Feast of Christ the King. Green is the liturgical colour of Ordinary Time. It is the colour of life and hope. There is nothing ordinary about Ordinary Time!

A Prayer for our Parish Schools
Loving God,
as Parish we give thanks for the work of our Catholic schools.
Help our school communities in their vocation
to educate and form our students,
that they may learn and develop their gifts and talents
and change the world for the better.
May we learn to walk together in faith and love,
that we may listen to the Holy Spirit,
to guide and inspire your Church on earth
until our journey brings us back home to you.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISITAN UNITY

Ballymascanlon Talks in 1973 which led to the formation of the Irish Inter-Church  Meeting. Today, these bodies for inter-church dialogue in Ireland enable Christians
to pray and work together for peace, reconciliation and social justice throughout Ireland

Golden Rule for Living.
If you open it, close it.
If you turn it on, turn it off.
If you break it, admit it.
If you can’t fix it,  call someone who can.
If you borrow it, return it,
If you value it, mind it.
If you make a mess, clean it up.
If you move it, put it back.
If it belongs to someone else, get permission to use it.
If you don’t know how to operate it, leave it alone.
If it’s none of your business, don’t ask questions.
