 THIRD SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

He said to them, ‘Follow me’

The first disciples were called without promises, programmes or guarantees. Peter and Andrew were casting their nets in the lake when they were called by Jesus. James and John were mending their nets. In these two words the disciple’s map is laid out. Disciples of Jesus are casters and menders. We cast the nets whenever we show the face of Christ to the world. We mend the nets whenever we reach out to bind up hearts that are broken or bodies that are torn. It is not enough to know God. We must make Him known. My life as a Christian should make nonbelievers question their disbelief in God. Tennis legend Arthur Ashe used as his motto for sport and for life: ‘Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can’. As for the sportsman so for the disciple. We do what we can in His name to cast and to mend. The rest is in His hands

Catholic Schools Week: Sunday 22nd to Sunday 29th January The theme for this year’s Catholic Schools Week is: Walking Together in Faith and Love: Each of us are on a journey in life. For Catholics, this journey begins and ends in God. Each part of that journey is a chance to come to know and love God. We can feel God’s presence when we pray, when we spend time with loved ones, in nature, in moments of joy and when we come together as a community to celebrate God’s love at Mass.

 Daily themes are as follows:

· Monday: Walking Together in Faith:

·  Tuesday: Waking Together in Love.

·  Wednesday: Walking Together to Celebrate [Grandparents Day. ]

· Thursday: Walking Together to Transform our World.

· Friday: Walking Together in Hope.

May I wish  our school in the parish every good blessing in this Catholic Schools Week.

A Teachers Blessing. You are blessed. You hold the children, in the palm of your hands. You form the minds, you inspire the hearts, you shape the hopes of the children of the future of the Kingdom of God. They bless you in return, with promise fulfilled, with hope realised, with lives well lived. Amen.

New Altar Server For the first time since March 2020, almost 3 years ago, we are delighted to welcome back Altar Servers over 2 months now. I know of much bigger parishes than ours with far less Servers– so I’m thankful to our parish families for that witness. There are 24 new servers in total forming 6 teams. Before Mass the servers recite the following prayer, Let us pray; God, Our Father, you have given us the privilege  of serving at your altar. Help us to be attentive and reverent in Your House. May we always think of what we are doing and saying; may we listen to your word; and so may we give glory to you and be an example to others. Amen.

Reflection on Christian Unity

[A poem to reflect this week of prayer for Christian Unity by Sam Hargreaves]

We are many, God's great diversity, Different faces, different races, yet we are one in Christ. Butchers, bakers, website makers, bankers, tailors, teachers, sailors, yet we are one in Christ.

Fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, single, married, broken, carried, yet we are one in Christ.

Some hopeful, some hopeless, some cope well, some cope less. Some sure and some doubt, some whisper, some shout, yet we are one in Christ.

Those with abundance, those with need, those who are generous or wrestle with greed, yet we are one in Christ.

A broken body, torn apart, mars God's image, breaks God's heart. And yet our Father knows how the end will be, when all his kids will sing in harmony, the bride will dazzle, her branches bloom, so add your voice to hymn the tune that we are one in Christ.

SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD

On the Feast of St. Jerome in 2019 Pope Francis designated the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (today)  as the Sunday of the Word of God. It is a day to celebrate the power and beauty of Sacred Scripture. The Bible is the Word of God, written through people for people. It is the greatest love-letter ever written. When the Word is proclaimed in Church God speaks to us and invites us to find Him.
