 FOURTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

The best portraits are those that convey something of the spirit of the subject. The Sermon on the Mount, which is probably a compilation of several sermons, takes us to the heart of Jesus. It’s the closest we have to a self-portrait of the Lord. All the sayings proclaimed in the Sermon become flesh and blood in Him. We are told that He sat down and began to speak. When a rabbi sat down he was about to deliver an important teaching. When he opened his mouth to speak, he was opening his heart. The teaching of Jesus, expressed in the form of nine ‘Beatitudes’ is an exaltation of the ordinary. It’s a blueprint for happiness. It’s a call to a way of life that is attainable, but it does stand the values of the world on their head. The poor, the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers, the ‘nobodies’ of this world have built their house on rock and they will have their reward, while those who pursue power, prestige, possessions, pleasure, popularity have laid their foundations on sand and their house will crumble. The Beatitudes are the attitudes to which we should aspire.

FEAST OF ST BRIGID: St. Brigid’s Day (Gaelic: Lá Fhéile Bríde) is celebrated on Wednesday next, February 1st. The Bank Holiday will take place on the first Monday in February each year, except where St Brigid’s day happens to fall on a Friday, in which case that Friday February 1st will be a public holiday. A “consensus” among the government was reached, according to the Sunday Times, with employers and trade unions set to name the 10th Bank Holiday after the patron saint as part of the pandemic bonus to thank the public in general, and frontline workers in particular

St. Brigid’s Blessing

May Brigid bless the house where you dwell. Bless every fireside every wall and door.

Bless every heart that beats beneath its roof. Bless every hand that toils to bring it joy.

Bless every foot that walks its portals through. May Brigid bless the house that shelters you

CLONMACNOIS SCHOOL B.O.M. MEETING

January 31st @ 7:30pm

PRAYER TO ST. BRIGID You were a woman of peace You brought harmony where there was conflict You brought light to the darkness, You brought hope to the downcast. May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled and anxious, and may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts and in our world. Inspire us to act justly and to reverence all God has made. Brigid, you were a voice for the wounded and the weary Strengthen what is weak within us. Calm us into a quietness that heals and listens. May we grow each day into greater wholeness In mind, body and spirit. Amen

Wishing you all blessings for Saint Brigid’s Day.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON FUTURE USE OF THE OLD SCHOOL (Shannonbridge)

A good attendance turned up for this meeting on Wed 25th Jan. with consultants Kevin Heanue and Ciaran Lynch and members of the architectural team appointed to undertake the design. The process has been steered by Shannonbridge Action Group and public funding has been obtained

The building ceased as a school in 2007. It’s a keenly felt loss. The main building is a protected structure, but sadly with time & no electricity or water allowed as it is vacated building (insurance requirement) deterioration was inevitable.  Since Jan 2022 the Dept of Educ have surrendered the lease on the National School property.

The just transition programmes provides us with an opportunity & resources to identify a good use/ uses for this 1 acre site. Considerations was given to challenges like small size (thus probably too small to be a visitor centre), protected structure, fairly small level of local demand for any one use, the importance of tourism based accommodation, a very central location, possible field studies centre for 3rd Level students. The idea is to attract in people to a centre  that is multi-use and flexible.

Some possibilities for usage are:

-A large room for education & community use

-2 units to accommodate 2x 6 person enterprises.

-A facility for 4 hot desks (where a person can book a fully serviced point (fibre broadband) to work remotely.

-a toilet/washing area facility

-a kitchen and dining facility with a mixture of double and single rooms and 24 bed spaces.

A camping/ glamping area as a second phase.

-Two 12 person meeting rooms as part of the facility

-Sensory gardens etc plus some parking.

The challenge is to ensure building design is flexible & capable of multi-purpose usage so that it can adapt & focus on best use as demand dictates, Each space should be designed so that it can pivot to meet the need. The need for management and marketing is critical in what might be a leased facility. Any views, ideas or feedback welcome to any member of the Action Group. Or I (T. Cox) can forward them

First Friday Feb 3rd  is the First Friday.

Please Note: Anyone who is sick and housebound in the Parish who would like to receive Holy Communion on the First Friday’s, please contact

Feast of St. Blaise Prayer of Blessing of Throat “Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from all ailments of the throat and from every other sickness, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.”
