FIFTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

Salt had a number of purposes in the Middle East of the first century. In a land without refrigeration it was used to preserve food and as a flavour enhancer. It was used to prevent erosion in the roofs of houses and Roman soldiers were paid in salt. The word salary is derived from the word for salt. If a soldier did not do his work, he would not get all his salt. Hence, we use the phrase ‘he is not worth his salt’ if someone does not do his work properly. The people who gathered around Jesus on that little hill in Palestine would have understood all this. His image was striking; His message was clear. His followers are charged with the task of bringing the flavour of life to others, preserving His truth on increasingly alien soil and transforming the world’s culture, rather than conforming to it. The image of light speaks to all cultures and all ages. Light is not a private energy. It is meant to be shared. It dispels darkness and it attracts. It guides and it warns. The life of the disciple should reflect the Light of Jesus to the world. It should evoke curiosity in others. It should move them to take a ‘second look’. Nothing points to God more clearly than the witness of a disciple doing good. A Chinese Christian approached a missionary once and proceeded to quote the Sermon on the Mount word for word from beginning to end. ‘How did you manage to do that’ enquired the missionary. ‘I spent the last year trying to live it’ replied the man. ‘In the world’s nights the Christian witness brings God’s dawn’. (Pope Francis )

Saturday next February 11th is the Feast of our Lady of Lourdes and is World Day of Prayer for the Sick. The late Pope John Paul II began the tradition on this day in Parish communities across the world of celebrating the Sacrament of Anointing to those who are ill or suffering, facing
surgery or because of age. People are anointed with the oil of the sick and prayed over. Mass will be celebrated at 7pm Shannonbridge and the sacrament of the sick administered. Also carers are invited to participate with the blessing of hands of carers

EUROPEAN SYNODAL ASSEMBLY: Archbishop Eamon Martin, President of the Irish Catholic Bishop’s Conference, will be among 200 delegates attending the first-ever European Synodal Assembly within the Catholic Church, which takes place in Prague next week. In October 2021, Pope Francis launched a global synod, with consultations taking place in dioceses across Ireland and across the world. Delegates from each Catholic Bishops’ Conference will now take part in a Continental Assembly to continue the synodal process of reciprocal listening and consultation. There are seven Assemblies taking place across five continents. Ahead of the  event, Archbishop Martin said “This Assembly in Prague will be a further step in the ongoing synodal process of strengthening the Church through prayer and dialogue, and by sharing experiences, questions and hopes for the future”.

You Are the Salt of the Earth
You are the salt of the earth
Called to be medicinal
And deter decay;
Called by the Great Physician- the Way,
To heal sin-sick souls.
You are the salt of the earth;
Called to ignite gloom-filled lives,
With long-lasting love from above.
You are the salt of the earth
Placed here to purify and edify
Born to beautify and magnify the Most High;
Placed to preserve and protect that which is
good.
You are the salt of the earth;
A seed sown to season tasteless lives;
Bring music to mournful souls;
Bring the brightness of the sun and the Son
To those who moan and groan in the dark.

Beatitudes for Carers
Blessed are those who care and who are not
afraid to show it — they will let people know
they are loved.
Blessed are those who are gentle and patient —
they will help people to grow as the sun helps
the buds to open and blossom.
Blessed are those who have the ability to listen
— they will lighten many a burden.
Blessed are those who know how and when to
let go — they will have the joy of seeing people
find themselves.
Blessed are those who, when nothing can be
done or said, do not walk away, but remain to
provide a comforting and supportive presence
— they will help the sufferer to bear the
unbearable.
Blessed are those who recognize their own
need to receive, and who receive with
graciousness — they will be able to give all the
better.
Blessed are those who give without hope of
return — they will give people an experience of
God.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE SICK
Beloved Lord, breathe
Calm in my mind,
Peace in my heart, and
Silence in my soul.
In the silence let me hear your voice,
In the peace let me see your face.
In the calm let me know your love.
May Christ who cared for those
in need and healed those who
were ill, care for you and bring you
healing,
Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes
