FEAST OF THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST

‘Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the Living Heart of each of our parishes’ (Pope St Paul V1). This feast is charged with happy memories of throngs of the faithful moving in devotional processions through streets festooned with papal flags, tricolours and all manner of bunting. At every door stood little altars, laden with statues, holy pictures and candles. The men and women walked proudly and reverently in their ‘Sunday best’, as they prayed the fifteen decades of the rosary and raised their voices with gusto to sing the ancient hymns, while the children from the First Holy Communion class scattered flower petals on the roadway, and all to salute the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. On this day we remember with gratitude all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith who preserved this treasure for us through days of persecution and days of prosperity. It could be said that we got cheap what they bought dear. They have left us a monument more lasting than bronze. As we accept anew the responsibility of holding the gift in trust for the next generation we recall the words spoken by Pope Benedict to parents some years ago: ‘Please go with your children to Church. This is not time lost. The day becomes more beautiful, the whole week becomes more beautiful when you go to Sunday Mass together’. ‘The moment we separate our lives from the Eucharist, something breaks’ (St. Teresa of Calcutta)

Body of Christ Blessed are the hungry; they shall get their fill. It is in our emptiness that we are filled.
It is in our confusion that we are guided.
It is in our weakness that we are strengthened.
It is in our sins that we are forgiven.
It is in our hunger that we are fed.
We believe that God had a homeland prepared for us
Where all our hungers are satisfied and all our hopes will be fulfilled. This conviction makes it possible for us to travel onwards with an ache in our hearts and an unquenchable longing in our souls.

Prayer:Become flesh again in me, Lord.
Let your timeless and everlasting love live out each sunrise to sunset within the possibilities and the impossibilities of my own, very human life. Help me to become Christ to my neighbour, food to the hungry, health to the sick, friend to the lonely, and freedom to the enslaved in all my daily living.

Novena Prayer to the Sacred Heart
O Divine Jesus, who said,“ Ask and you shall receive”, I kneel at your feet. From whom shall I ask if not from you, whose heart is the source of all blessings. With a lively faith in you, I come  to ask…
Share your petitions silently with the Sacred Heart. I admit I am most unworthy of your favours, Jesus, but this is not a reason for me to be discouraged. You are the God of mercies and you will not refuse a contrite heart. Look with pity on me, I beg you, and your compassionate Heart will find in my weakness a motive for granting my request. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on me. Amen.

Prayer to St. Anthony O holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for his creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore of you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours.
Novena Prayer

Thoughts on the Census Part 2  Finn McRedmond in her Irish Times article wondered aloud if a society without religion would actually be freer? The church may have a lot to atone for. But when we lose religion, she says, we risk losing good things too. Human beings have always turned to forces outside of themselves for inspiration and consolation. It is unlikely that we will be the first people in history to rid ourselves of the need for some kind of larger, common entity to turn towards. It is arrogant to think so. McRedmond proposes a ‘civic religion’, a ‘half-way house’ between rigid Catholicism and flexible liberalism. Civic religion embraces communal religious values which are not tied to any one denomination. Yet these values are as relevant as ever. Moreover, it is reasonable to suggest that without parishes and shared activity such as church going, society may become coarser, more atomised, preferring individuality over community. We can spend hours rehashing all the harms the church has wrought, and lamenting the damage done by religious extremism. But we must remember that atheism is as doctrinaire an idea as any traditional faith. And that an atomising society- where self-interest reigns - is as unpleasant as it is dangerous. Ireland more than anywhere understands the ugly consequences of overbearing doctrine. So, we should not be too quick to celebrate the decline of religion. Who knows what might replace it ??

PRAYER BEFORE COMMUNION

Lord Jesus, come to me.  Lord, Jesus, give me your love. Lord Jesus, come to me and give me yourself.

Lord Jesus, friend of children, come to me. Lord Jesus, you are my Lord and my God. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer After Communion Lord Jesus, I love and adore you. You’re a special friend to me. Welcome, Lord Jesus, O welcome. Thank you for coming to me. Thank you, Lord Jesus, O thank you For giving yourself to me. Make me strong to show your love Wherever I may be.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stay Close by me forever and love me, I pray. Bless all of us children in your loving care And bring us to heaven to live with you there.  I’m ready now, Lord Jesus, To show how much I care.

I’m ready now to give your love at home and everywhere at home and everywhere. Amen

Sing! Sing! Sing alleluia. This is the day the Lord has made. Dance! Dance! Dance alleluia. This is the day the Lord has made

Let us rejoice and be glad. This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad. This is the day.
