23rd SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘If he listens to you, you have won back your brother’

At the dawn of creation, Cain protested that he was

not his brother, Abel’s keeper. His words have been

quoted throughout history to justify turning a blind

eye, not getting involved even when a brother or

sister is taking the wrong path. Jesus says that we are

our brother’s, or sister’s keeper. Love corrects. If love

doesn’t correct, then it is not love, but the correction

must never be done harshly. It should never cause

resentment. Naming and shaming never brings

healing. When someone does something wrong,

we would do well to remember the many things

they did right. When Cardinal Angelo Roncalli, the

future Pope St. John XXIII, was Patriarch of Venice,

he once went to visit a wayward priest whose life was

causing scandal. Having entered the priest’s house the

Cardinal greeted him warmly and then knelt down

and asked the priest if he would hear his confession.

From that moment the priest began to turn his life

around. Correction done with love bears fruit.

Motto of Pope John Paul I: ‘Always seek to say easy

things and to say difficult things in an easy way’.

Season of Creation – A Prayer of Thanks We thank You, Lord, for the perfection with which You created our mother earth. For filling her with beauty, goodness and generosity. For looking at hebirrr with love, because by contemplating her You reaffirmed that everything created was very good. We thank You, Lord, for the trees, plants and flowers that speak to us through Your silence, for the song of the birds that in their diversity sing a beautiful melody to their Creator, for the air that gently caresses us. We thank You for all the Universe that in constant movement renews, recreates and transforms itself, elevating our being to You and making us contemplate Your greatness, praising You for all that You have created, as Saint Francis and Saint Clare did one day. We thank You Lord for so many men and women who throughout history have loved, guarded and cared for our common home, raising their voices as brave prophets, denouncing the injustice, misappropriation and exploitation of our sacred natural resources, accepting persecution and even martyrdom.

FEAST DAYS

Sept.14th Exaltation of the Holy Cross The discovery of the true cross was on this date in 335, discovered by St Helena.

Sept.15th Our Lady of Sorrows Mary standing by the cross’ suffered intensely with her only begotten son and united herself as his mother to his sacrifice’.

Sept 16th St Cornelius (pope) & St Cyprian (bishop) St Cornelius is the patron for cattle and domestic animals.

St. Ciarán of Clonmacnois * Memorial 9th September. Growing up, Ciarán was renowned for his love of animals and vice-versa. When he went to study with Finian of Clonard, he brought his own cow with him to the monastery, a common enough practice in itself. The milk yield of the cow was anything but common, however, and she produced sufficient for the whole monastery! When he was dying Ciarán remained down-to-earth and unsentimental, his missionary zeal undiminished. He told his disciples: ‘Go ye, let my relics bleach in the sun like the bones of a deer; better for you to dwell in heaven with me, than here with my relics.’ Prayer to St. Ciarán. Watch over your people, Teacher and Friend, Help us to see God’s presence in Prayerful youth, inspire the young Pilgrim for God, be with all Missionaries, Steep us in Gospel ways, Protector and patron, Confirm our faith so that we may walk anew with Christ. Amen.
