24th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘Not seven times, but seventy-seven times’

Everyone has to confront the issue of forgiveness

sometime. Forgiveness is a lovely idea until we

have someone to forgive! In the end it’s a decision.

We know the theory, but there comes a moment.

In 1943 Eric Lomax, a British army officer, suffered

severe mistreatment in a Japanese prisoner of war

camp in Thailand. Fifty years later he decided to

return to the place of his torture to meet and be

reconciled with his brutal torturer Nagase Takashi.

When asked to explain his magnanimous gesture

he replied, ‘sometime the hating must stop’. A

contrasting reaction comes from a Jewish inmate

who survived Auschwitz concentration camp. When

reflecting on his ordeal with a former colleague many

years later he proclaimed defiantly that he would

never forgive the Commandant of the camp. ‘In that

case’, replied his friend, ‘he still has you in prison’.

Forgiveness liberates. Unforgiveness enslaves.

‘The greatest form of giving is forgiving’.

(G.K.Chesterton).

World Day of Migrants & Refugees this Sunday, September 24th The Church has been celebrating the World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) since 1914. It is always an occasion to express concern for different vulnerable people on the move; to pray for them as they face many challenges; and to increase awareness about the opportunities that migration offers. This year’s theme, “Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay,” shines a light on the root causes that drive migration. .

It is the obligation of every person born in a safer room to open the door when someone in danger knocks. Dina Nayer

Healing Prayer by St. Padre Pio.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for loving me.
I thank you for sending your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, to the world to save and to set me free. I trust in your power and grace that sustain and restore me.

Loving Father, touch me now with your healing hands,
for I believe that your will is for me to be well in mind, body, soul and spirit.
Cover me with the most precious blood of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ from the top of my head to the soles of my feet.
Cast anything that should not be in me.
Root out any unhealthy and abnormal cells.
Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild and replenish any damaged areas.
Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection by the power of Jesus’ precious blood.
Let the fire of your healing love pass through my entire body to heal and make new any diseased areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function.
Touch also my mind and my emotion, even the deepest recesses of my heart.
Saturate my entire being with your presence,
love, joy and peace and draw me ever closer to you every moment of my life.
And Father, fill me with your Holy Spirit
and empower me to do your works so that my life will bring glory and honour to your holy name. I ask this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

CLONMACNOIS

Cowled monks ethereal

Their chant unheard

In shadowy procession

Sandles soft

On Kieran's ground

Mute witnessed

By the mellowed stones

Speaking their timelessness

Mortals stand

In trepidation

Trembling

On the brink

Of centuries

("Through a Small Window" 1984 Jack Quinn Ballinasloe)

Prayer to St. Ciarán. Watch over your people, /Teacher and Friend, /Help us to see God’s presence / Prayerful youth, /inspire the young /Pilgrim for God, /be with all Missionaries,/ Steep us in Gospel ways, /Protector and patron,/ Confirm our faith /so that we may walk anew with Christ. Amen.
