5th SUNDAY OF EASTER

I am the vine you are the branches’

The image of the vine and the branches is one of the fundamental images of the New Testament. Jesus uses this image as He addresses His disciples in the Upper Room on the night before He died. It reminds us of a truth which we have all re-discovered in a striking way in recent times: everything is interconnected. My interest is linked to everyone else’s. We are all leaves on different branches of the same vine. For the family of believers the vine is Christ. At the centre of Christianity, there is a person. Stay close to Him and all things are possible. Lose Him and die. The image teaches us also that the vine needs the branches. The mission of Christ is our mission now. We are to be His hands, feet, ears, eyes and tongue. This is a profound and privileged task which should cause us to ask ourselves a simple question every day. Does the example of our lives turn the thoughts of others to God?

A Prayer for Easter Eyes My Lord, Jesus, You have risen to new life! Give me new eyes with which to recognize your presence in the world around me. Sharpen my vision so that I see beyond the ordinary events of each day and into the extraordinary reality of your grace. Brighten my view of the world with renewed hope in the coming of your Kingdom. Soften my gaze so that I view others with the kind of tenderness and compassion you showed to so many. May each day of this Easter season provide glimpses of your glory. In your sacred name, I pray. Amen.

A Prayer for Inner Strength Dear God, Please give me the strength to face the day and to see the many blessings that it contains. Give me the courage to walk on, no matter how long the path or how many turns the road holds. Guide my thoughts so that I walk in love and peace and with gratitude stamped on my heart.

Prayer for Comfort in a Time of Loss May you be held by the God of compassion as you remember your loved ones today. May God be with you in your sorrow, and comfort you in your loss. May your God, your family and your friends, give you strength and confidence. May your spirit be lifted, may your heart be filled with peace, and may the light of God’s promise fill you with joy and hope. Amen

Please make an extra special effort to attend this year’s march which is timed perfectly to coincide with the upcoming elections.
