In memory of the late Pope John Paul - requiescat in pace!
Many tributes have been paid world-wide to the man who guided the Church for over 26 years, and won the admiration of the great and the humble. Clonmacnois has a very special reason to remember him with gratitude because of his visit here in 1979.
For this reason a Service of Remembrance, Thanksgiving & Prayer will be held on Sun 17th April @ 6pm in Clonmacnois.
Bishop Colm O'Reilly will preside, and other priests in the Deanery will attend. All are welcome.
Let us call to mind the words he spoke about Clonmacnois after his return to Rome in St Peter's Square:
"I will never forget that place, in which we stopped for a short time, in the early morning hours on Sun 30th Sept: Clonmacnois. The ruins of the Monastery & the Churches speak of the life that once pulsated there……….It is difficult to look on those ruins merely as a monument of the past; whole generations of Europe owe to them the light of the Gospel and the structural framework of their culture. Those ruins are still charged with a great mission. They still constitute a challenge……Here is Ireland: at the heart of the perennial mission of the Church, which St Patrick started."
