     Choose Life - we Cherish Them Both,                                                      A Vigil of Prayer for the right to life of mothers and their unborn babies, Saturday, 4^th. May, Our Lady’s Shrine, Knock, Co. Mayo.  This important event, supported by the Irish Bishops’ Conference, will begin with a themed Rosary Procession at 1 p.m. and conclude with Mass in the Basilica at 3 p.m.  All are warmly welcome to attend.  The Main Celebrant, Cardinal Sean Brady;  Homilist, Most Rev. Brendan Leahy, Bishop of Limerick.  A Blessing for Expectant Mothers who are present will be given during the Mass.  For further details see www.chooselife2013.ie.

Q. Why did Jesus call his teaching about loving one another a new commandment? The Old Testament already had that teaching. What was new in Jesus’ teaching?

A. Jesus was speaking of a standard of love that is new in its source, model and scope. The source of Christian love is the Holy Spirit by whose supernatural power a person can go far beyond the sort of love based on natural attraction. The model of this loving is Jesus, ‘as I have loved you’. His love inspired him to give up his life for us. The scope of Christian love is all-inclusive. It is not confined to those we get on with, it does not depend on conditions, it overcomes injustice and finds the energy of forgiveness. Christian love is supernatural.

Shannonbridge GAA Notes

Division Two League.

A slow start left Shannonbridge with too much ground to make up against Ballyfore, on Saturday, in Shannonbridge. The half time score stood at 2-5 to 0-2, but an improved second half performance reduced the deficit to four points with fifteen minutes remaining. However, two goals for the visitors saw them comfortable winners on a score of 1-10 to 4-11.

Shannonbridge lost out to Gracefield by two points, in the third round of the league on Sunday morning on a score of 1-3 to 0-8.

Shannonbridge / Doon Lottery.
There was no winner of last week’s jackpot. The numbers drawn were 7, 13, 19 and 23 and there were nine match three winners. This week’s jackpot is €6,000.

Well done to Gallen Community School, who added the Leinster Colleges Junior B title to their All Ireland success the previous week, by defeating Colaiste Iosagan, Portarlington by 3-14 to 3-11.

Today we celebrate Good Shepherd Sun – also Vocations Sun

All vocations flow from our Baptism.  Perhaps the following points can help us understand in an easy way what a ‘vocation’ means:

• Through Baptism each person receives a call or ‘vocation.’
• God calls all who are baptised to holiness & service.
• This call is lived as a single, married, ordained or consecrated person.

 

Those following the call to the Priesthood are few, and the situation is critical for diocesan clergy.  At present we have 2 Seminarians, both ‘late vocations’, in Maynooth.  One of these, Tony Gillooly, will be ordained to the priesthood on 23^rd June in Drumshanbo (D.V.).   Let us pray for him and all young people that they will respond to God’s call generously.  As we know,

“The average age of Catholic clergy is now 64, and as we age visibly, we find ourselves more and more isolated.”

Q. Every now and then I feel a call from God to priesthood. What should I do about it? The thought of a lifetime commitment to celibacy puts me off.

A. Pray for discernment and talk with a priest, preferably one who knows you. Celibacy is a daunting prospect if you focus on what you would be giving up. But celibacy may be seen in a different light as a grace offered by God to commit oneself bodily, mentally and spiritually to the service of Christ and his Church. For me personally, celibacy is not about the possible intimate relationship and family I never would have, but about a daily relationship with Jesus, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist.

 St Ciaran’s Community Alert

Will hold a Table Quiz on Friday 26^th April @ 9.30pm in Killeens to raise funds for an external defibrillator box for the village, and a contribution to the’ Tony Parker Foundation’ which has kindly donated 2 defibrillators to the parish, and provided training for 12 volunteers in the past year.  Please support this parish initiative.

Q. How can one be sure that prayer is not just talking to oneself, a one-way conversation?

A. The fact that Jesus told us to pray is enough evidence for me. Anyway, prayer is more than just talking. Jesus told people to go beyond words and ‘go into your private room and pray to your Father who is in that secret place and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.’ The art of prayer is in making a sacred space in our minds and hearts to be attentive to God’s relationship with us. ‘Prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst for him’ (Catechism #2560). Time spent in prayer moves one to respond to God in adoration, love, thanks, asking and repentance.

YEAR OF FAITH

During this Year of Faith it is planned to have a pilgrimage- celebration centred on the Sacraments in 7 historical / religious sites across the 4 Cluster parishes of Clonmacnois, Cloghan/Banagher, Ferbane, and Ballinahown.  It is hoped to involve all groups in the Parishes, starting on Thurs 4^th July, and continuing each Thurs @ 7.30pm.   Each parish will take responsibility for the pilgrimage- celebration at its own venue.  These locations will be selected in the coming days.  The concluding pilgrimage-celebration will be in Clonmacnois on Thurs 15^th August, and the Sacramental theme will be the Blessed Eucharist.
