Questions People Ask (Fr
O’Flynn- Intercom)
Q. Why did Jesus call
his teaching about loving one another a new commandment? The Old Testament
already had that teaching. What was new in Jesus’ teaching?
A. Jesus was speaking
of a standard of love that is new in its source, model and scope. The source of
Christian love is the Holy Spirit by whose supernatural power a person can go
far beyond the sort of love based on natural attraction. The model of this
loving is Jesus, ‘as I have loved you’. His love inspired him to give up his
life for us. The scope of Christian love is all-inclusive. It is not confined
to those we get on with, it does not depend on conditions, it overcomes
injustice and finds the energy of forgiveness. Christian love is supernatural.
