Mass for the Intentions of the People of the Parish, Missa pro Populo, in Shannonbridge, this Saturday, 27th, at 8.00 p.m.

Mass is celebrated at Cluain Ciaráin Prayer Centre, on Wednesday evenings at 7.30.

Saturday 27th is the Feast of St. Monica, 331-387, native of North Africa, converted her pagan husband to the faith and, by her prayers and tears, brought her son, St. Augustine, to Christianity and a moral life.

Sunday 28th, St. Augustine, 354-430. Bishop of Hippo, Algeria.  Converted to Christianity by the prayers and tears of his mother, St. Monica.  A most influential preacher and writer.

Monday 29th, the Beheading of St. John the Baptist. King Herod had married Herodias, his brother's wife.  He promised her daughter anything she wanted.  Motivated by revenge, Heordias prompted her to ask for John the Baptist's head.

Tuesday 30th, St. Fiacre, (Ossory, Kilkenny), lived at a hermitage at Breuil in France, patron saint of gardeners, died 670.

Wednesday 31st, St. Aidan of Lindisfarne, of Irish descent and a monk of Iona.  At the invitation of King Oswald he preached to the people of Northumbria with much success and founded his monastery on the Isle of Lindisfarne.  He died on 31st August, 651.

Saturday 3rd September, St. Gregory the Great, 540-604, a Roman noble and Prefect of the City before becoming a monk; elected Pope in 590, he established a pattern for the papacy in years to come and originated Gregorian chant.  It was he who sent St. Augustine of Canterbury on mission to England. 

Friday is the First Friday of September.  The Holy Communion calls to the sick and housebound will be made on Friday.

Baptisms.  Nevaeh Harper Darcy, daughter of Mel Darcy and Gemma Ward, Cloniffeen, was welcomed into the Christian community on Sunday, 14th August.

Dylan Simon McManus, son of Joseph and Eimear (O’Neill) McManus, Garrymore, was welcomed into the Christian community on Sunday, 28th August. 

The Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock takes place on Sunday, 4th September.  Confessions from 12.30 p.m.  Anointing of the Sick, 2.30 p.m.  Mass and Eucharistic Blessing of the Sick with Benediction, 3.00 p.m., followed by the Rosary Procession.

Clonmacnois Pattern Day will be celebrated on Sunday 11th September.  Ceremonies commence at 3.00 p.m.

Flower Arranging.  Ballinasloe Flower and Garden Club hosts a Flower Arranging Demonstration, by Ann Slattery, Ennis branch, The Association of Irish Floral Artists, in Gullane’s Hotel, Main Street, Ballinasloe, at 8.00 p.m., on Wednesday, 14th September.  Arranger’s competition: Nature’s bounty - foliage only.  Grower’s competition: Variety of home-grown fruit.  Admission, non-members, €5.00.

The time to bid farewell has arrived much earlier than originally anticipated.  I thank the people of The Parish of Clonmacnois for their welcome, their generosity and their support during the past year.  Special words to my neighbours at Cloonshask, to the staff, board and pupils of St. Ciaran’s National School, and to the members of Shannonbridge Active Retirement Association.

Fr. Tom Cox is no stranger to the parish.  I wish him many fulfilling years in Clonmacnois.
